FINtastic Fishing!!! 🦐🎣

Summary:

Finn convinces Shrimpo to go fishing with him, but Shrimpo's not having very good luck with his catches.. After a few failed attempts, Shrimpo agrees to let Finn help him

Notes:

Could be taken as platonic or romantic but Shrimpo clearly likes Finn at least a little bit, even if it's only as a friend. He's willing to go fishing with him after all!

First fanfic posted... kinda nervous........

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“It’s so FINtastic you came out with me!”

Fractals of yellow and blue reflected off of the fishbowl, leaving a warm glow on the umber boat. The whirring sound of the spinning reel, accompanied by a splash and a giggle filled the quiet air.

“WHAT THE FUCK!! HOW’D I GET A BOOT?! I HATE FISHING!”

Finn exhaled, his usual smile plastered on his face. “Sea-ms fishing doesn’t like you either! I don’t think I’ve ever caught a boot.”

“I KNEW I SHOULDN’T HAVE WENT FISHING WITH YOU. GET ME OFF THIS BOAT!!!” Throwing his rod down, Shrimpo huffed and crossed his arms, dramatically sitting down. Seeing a sympathetic yet amused expression form on Finn’s face, Shrimpo quickly closed his eyes and turned his head away, furrowing his brows almost as deep as his frown.

“Aww bud, clam down. Anyfin is possible if you keep trying!”

Scooting over to the cranky crustacean, Finn pushed his fishing rod into Shrimpo’s hands. “Let me help you out, I’m shore we can reel up somefin good!” He wrapped his hands around Shrimpo’s while he spoke.

Taking a quick glance at the fishbowl’s hands, Shrimpo jumped, turning back to the water. “I HATE YOUR HELP!!! I’LL FISH A BIGGER FISH THAN YOU COULD EVEN THINK OF!... WITHOUT YOUR HELP!!!!” Violently slinging the bait into the water, he waited and waited for a bite. Perhaps he threw it too far.. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to reel it all the way back in.. is what he would think if he wasn’t the great Shrimpo! Shrimpo can do anything!!.. Or so he told himself.

Finn hummed to himself and grabbed the rod that Shrimpo previously threw onto the floor of the boat. After untangling some wire, he put new bait onto the rod and threw it into the water. Not a few seconds later, a little gasp and fast whirring sounds came from the shrimp behind him.

“It’d be more e-fish-ient if you slow down, the fish might swim away if you reel it that fas-”

“WHAT THE FUCCCKKKKKK!! THIS IS RIGGED!!!!!!” Shrimpo stared almost dumbfounded at the empty line dangling in front of his face. He was so sure he got it, there was really no doubt.

Giving a soft laugh, Finn sighed. “Come take this one, I’m shore you’ll get it.”

“NO!! I HATE FISHING!” Once again, he sat down with a thud. The little wooden sailboat wobbled with the move, a little bit of water spilling overboard.

“We’re so far out, you’re gonna get bored just sitting there.” Swaying his body back towards the water, he continued humming.

A minute passed with the soft sound of the boat rocking on the waves, accompanied only by the fishbowl’s tune. Then a quick, repetitive tapping of a certain frustrated fella’s foot joined the mix. Not even another minute passed before he grunted and got up, exclaiming, “I HATE BEING BORED!”

Shrimpo angrily stared at Finn, waiting for something to do. Finn, of course, turned back with that usual toothy grin. Holding out his fishing rod to Shrimpo, he gleefully said, “I’ll help you, and then you’ll really catch the biggest fish!”

Huffing, the orangish reddish toon snatched the rod from the fishbowl’s hand. Finn readjusted, standing behind Shrimpo on his right. They were so close, the light reflecting off of Finn’s head made it hard for Shrimpo to see. Shrimpo grumbled as he waited for anything to happen. This wasn’t really any less boring than sitting around doing nothing. Considering that, he started to declare, “I WANT TO GO BACK TO LAND RIGHT N-”

His complaining was cut short by a tug on his string. He tensed and grabbed the reel. Reaching over, Finn put his hands over Shrimpo’s. Shrimpo jumped slightly, but maintained his position. He’d just use Finn’s help once, and then he’d absolutely show him up with his fishing skills!

Finn started reeling in the fish- the pace WAY slower than what Shrimpo felt was right. Wouldn’t the fish just get away if you pull it in this slowly?

Sure enough though, when the hook rose from the water, so did a fish! It wasn't anything huge, but it was Shrimpo’s first fish catch!

“GASP! What a gilliant (brilliant) little bluegill! Its breast is so bright orange- that means it’s probably a breeding male! Ah, what a beauty!”

Finn beamed at the fish. Shrimpo, simply put, thought it was kinda stupid. I mean, what cool stuff does that fish have that would make him so interesting? Shrimpo is bright orange too!

Still, maybe watching Finn light up over it wasn’t so bad. He didn’t hate it.

Shrimpo handed the fish to Finn and put more bait on his hook.

He’d stay out a little longer..

He has to catch the biggest fish, afterall.

Notes:

I was gonna post this on Sunday but decided to yolo it and post it today... I'll just write more. I usually write longer stuff but it just wasn't really coming to me so this one is kinda short

I hope you guys liked it!! I'll probably write more stuff where it's explicitly romantic instead of being up in the air, but I figured a nice wholesome fic that could be taken platonically or romantically is always jolly to read. Couples aren't always like smooching each other after all

Let me know if you have any suggestions!!! I'll gladly take ideas! I also proofread it once but I could totally still have spelling errors in there so beat me up in the comments if so 🙏

If you wanna talk to me, my Tumblr is linked in the linktree in my bio!! I also post art there 💜🦐🎣
