Work Text:
Dean was standing in front of the mirror, staring at the flat surface before a sigh escaped.
From behind, Cas wrapped his arms around the hunter, pressing a soft kiss to Dean's cheek.
"You don't have to do this today, you know. You can tell him any day."
Dean nodded.
"I know, I just, I don't want to leave him in the dark for too long, no secrets between us."
Cas smiled, his eyes moving to meet Dean's in the mirror.
"You need to stop looking at yourself like that in the mirror, Dean, I think your body is perfect just the way it is."
Dean softly smiled, a warm expression.
"Thanks Cas."
Dean grabbed the nearest shirt, throwing it on. It was a somewhat faded metallica shirt but that didn't matter. Cas smiled.
"Do you want me to go with you?" He asked but Dean refused.
"No, I think I've got to do this on my own."
Cas pressed a final kiss to the hunter and with that final touch, Dean moved towards the door and opened it.
It was time she faced her brother.
---------------------
Dean first knew she was a woman, or rather a girl, while John was on a hunt and she was left to care for a young Sammy, back then her baby brother couldn't have been more than seven years old.
She and Sam had been cooped up in the same motel room for the past four days, keeping each other's company as boredom overtook them.
It hadn't been something she knew straight away, but in that very moment, as she was left with only the sound of an annoyed brother who continued to whine and her own thoughts, something Dean had never expected found it's way worming inside her brain.
"I wonder if I could be a girl."
It wasn't the first time Dean had had thoughts that were deemed 'wrong', at least by what John saw, but it was the first time she kept it to herself and didn't dare to speak it out loud.
She wasn't going to make that mistake again.
-----------------------
Dean was walking through the hallways of the bunker until she found the doorway to the kitchen. She paused, slowly turning until she could see the brown locks of her younger brother as he sat alone, slowly eating.
She moved forward, letting a final sigh escape from her lungs before she made her way to Sam, sitting down next to him.
"Hey." She began, wanting to look at him but finding herself unable to look him in the eye.
"What's up?" He asked, his fork stabbing into a piece of lettuce and bringing it up to his mouth.
"There's something I want to tell you, something I've been wanting to tell you for a long time now actually."
Sam raised an eyebrow at this.
"If this is about you and Cas I already know about that, remember?"
Dean let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head.
"No, no that's not it. I, uh, well-" She let out a sigh as she spoke under her breath. "God, why is this so difficult to say?" She wondered out loud. Sam put his fork down, slowly turning to face Dean.
"Dean whatever it is, we'll get through it together. Just, tell me what's going on, okay?"
Dean nodded.
"Yeah, okay, I, um-" She looked around one final time, staring deep into her brother's eyes before she looked down, staring at her hands that twitched against one another and refused to stay still. "I'm a woman, Sam."
A silence filled the kitchen and Dean found herself unable to look up, she just couldn't look at his face. See the look she always expected to see, the hatred, the disgust. Of course she would deserve it, she knew she would, it was wrong of her to think it would be any different now. It was wrong, so wrong, it was the worst-
Her spiral of thoughts was interrupted as she felt a hand on her shoulder. Her gaze slowly moved, travelling until she met the eyes of the little brother staring back at her.
"Hey, it's okay, you hear me?" Dean nodded. "So, you're a woman?" He asked and Dean found herself unable to let her voice out, instead giving yet another nod. Sam smiled. "Okay, that's good to know." He stated, removing his hand from Dean's shoulder and staring back at her.
Dean stared back at her brother confused.
"You're not mad?"
Sam let out a small chuckle.
"Mad? Why would I be mad? I'm not dad, Dean-" He stopped for a second, staring at his now older sister. "Is it Dean or Deanna or something else?"
"It's Dean, it's still Dean." She confirmed, causing Sam's shoulders to slightly relax back.
"Good, good, well not good but you know."
A silence filled the kitchen once more.
"How long have you known?" Sam asked, causing a sigh to escape from Dean.
"Do you remember the summer Dad was gone for three weeks and we had to stay in that motel and we were so bored, we created that game with peanuts?"
Sam thought for a moment before the memory came flooding back, his eyes widening.
"Dean, that was over thirty years ago. Have you really been hiding this for that long?"
Dean shrugged her shoulders.
"I guess after so long, I didn't know what to do."
Sam sighed, a short smile returning to his face as he finally returned to picking at lettuce in his salad.
"Well, at least I know now." He smiled. "And I always wanted a sister."
Dean smiled and for the first time ever, she finally could be herself with her family.
