Work Text:
Buck opens his door to find May Grant standing on his porch.
“May? You okay? What happened?” Buck steps to the side letting May in the house.
May doesn’t respond, she goes to sit on the couch, Buck follows and sits next to her.
“Ice cream?” May asks while reaching for the remote.
“Yeah, I got cookies and cream. Want some?”
“Please?” Buck goes to retrieve the ice cream. He comes back to see May getting comfortable on the couch with the throw blanket over her legs and The Princess and The Frog playing on the TV.
“Okay…guess we’re having a movie day.” He hands over the ice cream and starts to get comfortable.
Towards the middle of the movie, Buck notices May’s not paying attention. It looks like something’s on her mind.
“May.” May looks up at Buck. “What’s wrong?”
“What? Nothing, can’t I just want to hang out with you?”
“I didn’t say you couldn’t, but you were more focused on the wall rather than the movie.” May lets out a deep sigh.
“May, what happened, if it’s bad, I promise I won’t tell Athena.” May smiles at that.
“Okay, before I tell you, you have to promise not to involve any chainsaws.” Buck looks concerned and confused. How does she know about the chainsaws?
“I’ve heard the stories, Buck.”
“Did—did somebody hurt you? Because if they did then I can’t prom—”
“No, nobody hurt me, well not physically.”
“What the hell does—May, what happened?” His tone is serious.
“You didn’t promise. I can’t tell you until you promise.”
“Okay, I promise.” He holds out his pinky for May. She wraps hers around his.
“Okay, um, so you remember the firefighter auction?” She looks at Buck to see him nodding.
“So, um, I kind of bid…on Ravi.”
“Oh my God, why does this keep happening, first Chim and Maddie and now you and Ravi? …Shit, sorry, I made it about me, please, continue, I’m listening, but if Ravi was an ass to you, I might have to revoke my promise.”
“You can’t revoke a promise you’d just be breaking the promise.”
“Well, I might have to break my promise. What did he do?” Buck is already planning when and how to use the chainsaw.
“Nothing! That’s the problem. After the auction we went out on a date and then I invited him over and we—”
“Oh, somebody kill me, please.”
“Anyway, Harry kind of walked in on us and then after that Ravi never called…or texted.”
“Okay, let me get this straight, you spent?”
“$1600 dollars.”
“You spent $1600 dollars on…Ravi, and he ghosted you?”
“Yes, that’s literally what I just told you, are you even listening?” She lets out a deep breath. “I just don’t know what happened. Maybe I did something wrong or—”
“No, don’t blame yourself. May Grant, you are a beautiful, kindhearted, hardworking woman, if he can’t see that then he doesn’t deserve you Mayflower.”
May’s face contorts. She looks sad but also happy?
Buck doesn’t expect this but May pulls him into her grasp and wraps her arms around him. “Thanks Buck. You’re the best big brother.”
Buck knew that May had looked up to Maddie during their time together at dispatch. They had formed a strong bond, so he recognized that May thought of Maddie like her older sister.
To Buck, Bobby and Athena were his parents, so that would make May and Harry his siblings. He had considered them his siblings for a long time, but he never voiced it.
He was afraid of rejection. That…maybe they didn’t see their relationship that way. May’s confirmation hit him hard, in a good way. This is his sister.
Buck hugs May back. “Yeah, well you’re the best little sister.”
May continues to hold onto Buck for a couple of seconds. “So, was watching The Princess and The Frog you just projecting or—”
“Shut up.” May pushes off of Buck. “Get off me, leave me alone.” Buck laughs at her and notices her trying not to smile. She’s failing miserably.
“So, what’s the verdict? Will the chainsaw be making an appearance?” May asks.
“Hmm, to be determined, we’ll see if he gets his act together.” Buck tries to get on his phone secretly. He opens his text message thread with contact with the name of ‘Harold 😀’.
Seat Buckle 🫡: Harold.
Harold 😀: oh shit
Harold 😀: punctuation
Harold 😀: what did I do?
Harold 😀: i don’t remember doing anything
Seat Buckle 🫡: Why didn’t u tell me about May and Ravi???
Harold 😀: ohhhhh
“Who are you texting?” May says squinting her eyes at Buck.
“None of your business.” He shifts away from May. May moves to try and take Buck’s phone but he lifts his arm up so she can’t reach it.
May backs down. “Buck please don—”
“It’s not Ravi, I promise, I wouldn’t do that.”
“Who is it then? Oh, Eddie, right? You’re always texting Eddie.” She smirks and focuses her attention on the movie.
“No, it’s not Eddie and I am not always texting him.”
“Right.” She drags out the word. He ignores her and goes back to texting Harry.
Seat Buckle 🫡: What do u mean ‘ohhhhh’
Harold 😀: well i was very traumatized by that whole ordeal so i tried to block it out of my memory
Harold 😀: u planning something?
Seat Buckle 🫡: Potentially
Harold 😀: involve me…
Buck smirks at his phone and looks up catching May staring at him in confusion.
“What?”
“If it’s not Eddie then who else could make you smirk like that?”
“Just watch the movie. You’re the one who put it on.”
“Mmm deflection.” Buck rolls his eyes and sighs deeply. “Okay, okay, I’m watching the movie.”
