Work Text:

It was silent between them after discussing what Mika found out about the seraphs during his time living in Sanguineum. The blond glanced over his quiet companion, unruly raven hair framing an adorable face that was settled on a subtle pout, eyes furrowed like he was sad about something.

“What are you thinking about, Yuu-chan?” Mika finally asked, wanting to hear Yuu’s thoughts.

The shorter male released a gust of air, puffing his cheeks slightly, “I was just thinking how life might have been like for you in that city. You were all on your own and no one was really there to take care of you—

“I can take care of myself, Yuu-chan.”

The steel in his voice sounded a little indignant but he didn’t want Yuu thinking he was incapable of surviving on his own. He managed to get here, didn’t he? Despite that, Yuu pushed through.

“I meant, it’s not easy living on your own . Especially when you had us and the kids making sure you were eating food daily instead of giving it away to somebody else. But you don't anymore and I'm just concerned. You need to take care of yourself too, Mika.” Yuu said, somehow ended up lecturing the vampire about his well-being. There was a long pause before Mika replied.

“No one really took care of me when I was young.” His eyes were staring straight at the road ahead of him as he continued his tale.

“My parents...weren't the best at being parents. My dad was an alcoholic beat me up nearly everyday and my mom went insane when she joined a cult. But as their child...I wanted their love, you know? I tried to be the perfect son, to be worthy of their love. But I never achieved it. They just threw me out of a moving car and got into an accident themselves. I watched the car explode before my eyes.”

He kept an even, serious tone as he talked, already indifferent to what his previous parents had done to him. They weren't family to him anymore and they will never be. Mika had found his own family now and he was sitting right beside him.

He didn't know what expression Yuu had on but Mika didn't want to take the chance in case he saw something he didn't want to see. He'd rather not be pitied for something that held little matter to him now.

He was surprised however to hear Yuu telling a story of his own.

“You understand then, what it feels like to be treated as if you were any less than human. When I first tried to get control of my demon weapon, it showed me things deep in my memory that I didn't even remember anymore.” Yuu began quietly but Mika heard him all the same with his heightened senses.

“I saw my family, my mom and dad, and they were trying to...kill me too.”

Yuu looked out of the window, eyes lost in a haze of the past. “He had a knife and was about to stab me. My mother did nothing but call me a demon.”

Somehow hearing that pained Mika, his heart aching inside his chest as he imagined a 5 year-old Yuu getting stabbed by his father and he couldn't help but mumble a, “Yuu-chan…”

“It made me thankful actually that I had forgotten most of my childhood years before the orphanage. They weren't really my family to begin with. Not anymore.”

He had his head propped up on a fist, his elbow leaning against the edge of the car window while his other hand stayed lack on his lap. Then suddenly, Yuu felt it being taken and held by another's and he turned his head to face Mika who wasn't looking at him at all. He was steering one handed now but his face continued to be stoic and solemn as he clutched Yuu's hand tightly.

Only Mika understood him, know that this wasn't just about abusive parents and losing a family. It was a sign of support, to forget all that had happened in their past and just think about now. Yuu knew that he had better people surrounding him today and he was grateful for it. Especially grateful that Mika could still be a part of it.

So Yuu smiled, curling his fingers with Mika’s and interlocking them together, feeling the other squeeze his hand back.

"We're the lucky ones. ” Mika told him, caressing the side of Yuu’s hand with his thumb. "We survived and they didn't and now we found each other again, Yuu-chan." He glanced at him from the corner of his red eyes, fangs slightly peeking as he grinned too.

Without saying anything, Mika pulled on the brakes suddenly and turned to his human companion. Yuu looked at him with raised, questioning brows and didn't flinch when Mika cupped his face and pulled him closer to him.

"This is a sign of how much you mean to me, Yuu-chan." Mika whispered before Yuu felt lips descend upon his. It wasn't long, just a gentle touch between two mouths and Yuu relished the tingling feeling it sent to his face and down his belly where the warmth spread even more.

When they pulled back, Yuu traced his lips with a finger, strange how another's mouth pressure on it could feel so good.

"It's like we're sealing a promise." Yuu said, eyes fluttering open to stare at him. Mika realized he wasn't disgusted nor annoyed by the unexpected action and the blond felt a little better for doing it. He nodded his head in answer, taking Yuu's hand once again.

"I’m going to take care of you now on, Yuu-chan." Mika told him, using his free hand to brush back Yuu's soft raven hair from his face. Yuu leaned his head at the gesture, precious smile ever present.

"And you too, Mika. I won't let you starve yourself hungry again." His grin widened when Mika only sent him a deadpanned look before Yuu decided on closing the distance between them again with another kiss.

For a short while, they forgot all about the war, the vampires and the end of humanity, and just focused on themselves, here and now, together and safe, kissing in car.
