Chapter Text
He was staring down at what couldnt be Chris, he was supposed to be 20 years in the past, but that haircut and those clothes looked too out of date for 2009.
He was about to say something when someone else he recognised came running up yelling Chris' name.
Chris —who hadnt looked up yet until this point— turned his head back to see who was calling for him but froze mid turn to look at Gene.
Ray finally caught up to them and started scolding Chris for running off then he noticed that Chris wasnt looking at him, he was about to go off on him again but then he looked at chris' eyeline.
"Guv?" they both said in unison.
"Chris? Ray? what're yous doin 'ere? whos watchin over my CID?"
"What d'ya mean what're we doin here guv? we're in london aint we?" Chris asked looking over to ray.
"Well unless you've gone and run us over to luton we should be." Ray supplied.
Gene couldnt be arsed trying to explain everything. Sam was always better with all the Doctor Who shit, time travel n whatnot.
"No, we arent in luton, christ if you managed to run over there id think an aliens gone an replaced ya." Gene said to Ray. "But first I need to take you somewhere."
"Not luton I hope." chris said and Ray just looked at him.
Just as Gene was about to start retracing his steps a black Jeep pulled up to them.
Chris gasped "thats double yello's."
"We're detectives Chris not bloody traffic wardens." Ray rolled his eyes.
Sam stepped out his attention focused on Gene. "Gene! I was lookin' everywhere for you! how've you managed to walk into town anyways?"
"Gladys! perfect timin' as always." He said watching Chris and Rays shocked expressions out of the corner of his eye.
"Boss?" Chris said turning Sam's attention to him.
"Aren't you meant to be 6 feet under?" Ray looked at him like he was a ghost, Chris went to touch him like he believed his hand would go through.
"c'mon, I think this conversation needs a cuppa." Ray was still looking at sam skeptically as Gene got into the car.
-------
Now its a murder on the dance floor, I wanna take this further than the dance floor, I ain't forcefull but i'm still hardcore-
Gene turned the radio off and Sam gave him a look.
"What? its not like you like that rap shit." Gene said before looking back at Chris and Ray who both looked extremely bewildered. "And neither do they im guessin'"
"Just plug in my ipod." Sam said sighing.
"alright, bossy."
Gene went through Sams playlist. "God, d'ya listen to anythin' that ain't depressin or gay?" He said more to himself than Sam.
Finally he landed on a song and he relaxed a bit as the acoustic guitar flowed through the vehicle.
On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
Sam looked at Gene again but he was too busy enjoying the song.
-----
When they got back to the house Gene went off to brew the kettle as Sam, Chris, and Ray all settled down on the sofas.
Sam almost immediately launched into explaining where they were and how he was still kicking, part way through Gene came in with brews for everyone and he sat down next to Sam.
Ray started claiming that he knew Sam was a mad one, and much to Sam's protests Gene stole his phone and threw it at Ray.
"ave a look at that." He said.
Chris zoned out completely as Ray started fiddling with the tiny gadget, Gene got bored and decided to turn on the tele to watch Doctor Who.
They just finished Blink the other night so he put on Utopia.
Eventually Chris woke up from his trance and started watching too, fascinated by the high quality television.
-----
"Hey boss, he looks like you." Chris said pointing at the old man turned young, he looked over at Sam "Like weirdly like you." he squinted his eyes.
Sam looked nervous under his scrutiny. "Yeah, why is that. Boss?" Ray said.
Sam sighed. "I had a mate back in uni who works at the BBC now and she rang me up one day asked if i wanted to audition for this show cuz i was out of work."
"Y'know for a poof you're not too bad at actin'" Gene said as the episode ended. "But i thought y'said that you transferred to london?"
"Yeah but it's not like the process was quick, they didnt even want me demoted cuz of how well i was runnin' the CID in manchester." Sam watched the credits go by and saw his name at the bottom credited as The Master.
"Runnin'? No self respectin' DCI would ever let his DI run the place." Ray chimed in lighting up a cigarette.
Sam scoffed "I was the DCI Ray."
"Yeah in your dreams." Ray laughed and chris joined in, stopping after a moment.
"Sorry boss." He said looking ashamed.
"Anyways back to all this future nonsense, why would we be brought ere'? Not like we're you with all your insanity." Ray said.
"Well here im perfectly sane, if yous went out spouting about how its 1981 or summat youd be the ones thrown in the loony bin." Sam retorted.
"Sorry boss but how are we supposed to believe all this? I mean resurrection shit aside, but its not like you've actually stolen the tardis and brought us here yourself, have you?...have you?" Chris said the last bit skeptically.
"Im not a time lord Chris, its just tele." Sam said holding his forehead.
"Thats what a time lord would say if he didnt want me to think he was a time lord." Chris said squinting his eyes at Sam.
"Right, this is real we're all in 2009 Gladys isn't a time lord, and we dont know why we're ere'. happy?" Gene cut off whatever Sam was gonna say.
"Comin' from you Guv it seems less insane." Ray said.
"Well Sammy-boy has a reputation for the hysterics, and as we all know i am completely sound of mind." Gene said smugly.
