Golf Ball laid there, in the soft Goiky grass, looking at the clouds. The waves lapped at the shore of the canal, and the sun beamed down on her, making her feel warm.
She'd lost track of how long she laid there, staring at the clouds, one reminded her of Tennis Ball.
For some strange reason, Golf Ball thought about her best friend a lot more than she deemed appropriate.
He made her feel heard, important, like she wasn't the annoying bossy bot everyone said she was, loved, even.
But that was impossible. They were strictly platonic.
Right?
"Golfie!! There you are!" His head popped into her view. "I've been looking for you everywhere!"
"Hey, Tennis Ball." She sat up. "What did you need?"
"Nothing, really." His eyes darted to the spot next to her, then back to her. "Can I join you?"
"Yeah, of course."
He grinned and sat down.
She could have sworn her heart melted a little when she saw his smile. It could light up the world.
Or at least, her world.
"Anyway, I was just wondering where you were. I was starting to get a little worried," he admitted sheepishly.
"I just wanted to be alone for a bit. To think."
"I understand," he nodded, "I can go, if you want." He began to get up.
"No, please," she stopped, recognizing the odd desperation in her voice. She cleared her voice and gave him a smile, "You can stay."
He returned the smile and sat back down. "Good, because the funniest thing just happened."
She nodded and let him talk.
It was something about Blocky and one of his pranks, but she couldn't focus all that well when he looked like that. Fucking adorable.
Tennis Ball must have noticed that she wasn't really paying attention because he asked, "Are you even listening?"
That snapped her out of her thoughts, "Oh, uh. Yes! I was."
"Really?" He raised an eyebrow, "Then what did I just say?"
"Um." She blanked.
"Just my point."
"Sorry, TB."
"It's ok," He smiled, "What's wrong, though?"
"Nothing," she replied, much too quickly.
"Bullshit," he responded.
She both hated and loved his ability to see right through her. "It's nothing, really."
"It's not nothing. You can talk to me, you know that, right?"
"I know... It's just.." she trailed off and turned her gaze to the sky once again. "Do you ever think about... Us? Like, being more?"
The first thing that came to Tennis Ball's mind was, play dumb.
Of course, he thought about it. All the time. Whenever he saw her, all he thought of was what it'd be like to be hers, to kiss her, to wake up to her every morning. But he'd accepted long ago that the feelings were probably one-sided. And now he's learning she does feel that way?
"W-what do you mean?" He managed to stutter, his voice more nervous than he intended it to be.
"I know you know what I mean, Tennis Ball. Do not make me spell it out for you."
He stayed silent, his heart pounding in his chest. What was he supposed to say?
Obviously, he was supposed to say yes. Yes, he did.
"Fuck. I fucked up, didn't I?" Golf Ball got up. Usually, she carefully picked out her words. Thinking over them once or twice, but this time, she didn't think. And now she risked her relationship with him.
"Golf Ball-" he got up after her. "You didn't screw anything up."
She turned around. He was close, too close. "But-"
"But, nothing. I think of it, too. All the time," He assured.
"You-" He cut her off by kissing her.
He was kissing her. Her eyes widened, absolutely not expecting it. But she didn't hate it; in fact, she leaned into it, letting her eyes flutter shut.
Tennis Ball pulled back, a sheepish smile on his face. "I've been wanting to do that... for a while now."
Golf Ball was floored. She stared up at him, her lips parted and face flushed. Then she giggled.
"Uh. Are you laughing at me? Why are you laughing at me-"
"I did not think you would ever initiate a kiss like that," she smiled with a softness only he could get out of her.
"O-oh."
She leaned up and gave him a peck on the cheek. "I liked it."
He said softly, "I did too."
