As The World Caves In.

Summary:

It was doomed from the start. Only two hands intertwined, refusing to let go even as the world crumbled around them. When the dust finally settled, rescuers would find them together—still holding each other, still connected, still choosing each other even in death.

Chapter 1: The Promises We Shouldn't Make

Chapter Text

The moonlight made a liar out of the world. It softened the broken windows, silvered the rubble, and painted Himiko Toga in a glow far too gentle for someone who’d carved her name into the nightmares of heroes. Ochako knew better than to stand this close, knew better than to let her heartbeat stutter when Toga tilted her head and smiled like they were just two girls meeting after curfew. But knowing and doing had never been the same thing, not with her.
Tonight was supposed to be the end. So why did it feel like the beginning of something she wasn’t allowed to want?

Toga’s smile faltered first. It always did, right before she said something honest. “You came alone,” she murmured, stepping closer. “That’s dangerous, Ochako.” Ochako swallowed. “You knew I would.” A breeze stirred the dust around them. Somewhere far off, sirens wailed, a reminder that the world was still burning, still demanding they choose sides. Toga reached out, brushing her fingers against Ochako’s glove. “You’re shaking.”
“I shouldn’t be here,” Ochako whispered. “I know.” Toga’s voice softened. “But you are.” For a moment, they just breathed the same air. Two girls who should have been enemies, who could have been friends, who were becoming something neither had a name for. Toga leaned in, forehead almost touching Ochako’s. “If this is the last time we meet like this… tell me something true.” Ochako’s breath hitched. She shouldn’t say it. She shouldn’t even think it.
“I don’t want you to die,” she said. Toga’s eyes widened, not with joy, but with grief. “Then you shouldn’t love me.” Ochako froze. “I never said—”
“You didn’t have to.”
The sirens grew louder. Backup was coming. Toga stepped back, the moonlight catching the tears she refused to let fall. “Next time, we’ll be on opposite sides again.” Ochako nodded, throat tight. “Next time… I won’t hesitate.” Toga smiled a broken smile. “Liar.” And then she vanished into the shadows, leaving Ochako alone with the truth she could no longer deny.
