Work Text:
Yoongi is stressed.
At least he thinks what he feeling is stress right now.
He feels slightly dizzy and overwhelmed, his heart is certainly beating a little too fast and his hands feel cold and warm at the same time.
Whatever this is, he knows the source of it.
Kim Taehyung. His roommate, Kim Taehyung, and a thunderstorm.
He doesn’t really mind thunderstorms as long as he is inside where the strong wind and the rain can’t hit him. But Taehyung seems to mind them a lot so when Yoongi feels something repeatedly poke his shoulder just as he’s about to fall asleep, Yoongi is a little surprised to find Taehyung standing there in front of him wrapped in blanket and huge eyes looking down to him.
The two of them stare at each other in silence and Yoongi is about to ask what Taehyung is doing in his room, but a particularly loud wave of thunder interrupts them and Taehyung visibly flinches.
“H-hyung,” he whimpers and his usually low and lively voice sounds so small. “Can I, uh, can I stay with you?”
Yoongi blinks and his inner voice yells about how bad of an idea that is.
The thing is, Yoongi has something that some people (Namjoon) would categorize as a crush. Yoongi just calls it some kind of weird lump in his throat whenever Taehyung is around (or when he isn’t.) So Taehyung staying with him, in his bed, throughout the night, probably very close, is probably going to be the end of Min Yoongi.
But then again, Taehyung looks so lost and Yoongi can’t ever say no to him anyway. So he nods.
Taehyung lets out a sigh of relief and lifts Yoongi’s blanket to slip in next to him, letting his own blanket drop to the floor. Which is fine. Both of them under the same blanket. That’s great. Really.
Before Yoongi can even react, Taehyung reaches out with his too long limbs and basically wraps himself around Yoongi and Yoongi is stressed.
“So,” Yoongi begins after some moments of awkward silence. “Didn’t know you’re afraid of storms.” Yoongi purposely looks anywhere but Taehyung’s face which is a bit too close to Yoongi’s own.
Taehyung sniffs once and his arms squeeze Yoongi even tighter which is, of course, just fine. “Am not… this is like, you know, just in case you’re scared.”
“Right… I am scared,” Yoongi deadpans.
“Ri-“ Taehyung’s about to agree but the room is illuminated for a second by a lightning strike and it brings another rumbling thunder and Taehyung shrieks and presses his face into Yoongi’s shoulder.
Yoongi considers what to do. He isn’t exactly the smoothest guy in social situations and this situation is so far out of his expertise, he feels a little lost. Yoongi’s hand moves up and he awkwardly pats Taehyung’s head three times. To his surprise, Taehyung actually seems to relax, but it doesn’t last long as the storm seems to be right above them and Taehyung eventually starts shaking next to him.
“Taehyungie-“
“D-don’t be scared, hyung… I’m here, I—“ Another thunder, another loud shriek.
Yoongi slowly turns and comes face to face with the younger. He can’t see him too clearly in the darkness of his room, but Yoongi knows there are tears pooling in Taehyung’s eyes and Yoongi throws caution at the wind and reaches out to cup Taehyung’s face.
“I’m not scared. You’re here, right?”
Taehyung nods and hugs him closer. “Can you talk about something?”
“What do you wanna talk about?”
Taehyung shrugs and winces at the sounds coming from outside. “Anything, please.”
“I, uh,” Yoongi tries to come up with anything, but again; this isn’t his strength. Taehyung is the one who always knows how to raise the mood. Who can easily move the people around him with his charm and lively personality. Who is so effortlessly funny in his own way that Yoongi loves so much.
The rain smashes against Yoongi’s window in a harsh manner and the thunder keeps rumbling outside and Yoongi can see Taehyung growing more distressed by the second.
For a split the second the room is bright, almost blinding Yoongi and the thunder that follows is louder than any of the ones before.
This time Taehyung doesn’t even shriek. He just pulls Yoongi close and buries his face into his shoulder and Yoongi can feel the first tears spill and fall onto his own skin.
He wraps his own arms around the younger and slightly panics because he has no idea what to do. Why must he be so fucking awkward?
Yoongi feels Taehyung’s mouth move against his neck and it takes him some time to make out what the mumbling meant. “Make it stop, hyung.”
Yoongi has never seen Taehyung like this and all he wants is to bring back his usual dorky room mate who likes to cuddle and talk about, in Taehyung’s own words, The Two Big A’s -- anime and animals. Yoongi wants to bring back that Taehyung that likes to listen to BIGBANG on full volume and dance through their apartment. That one that makes Yoongi tea when he works through the night. Who always supports him and genuinely loves Yoongi’s music.
“Do you think giraffes could play lacrosse with their necks?” Yoongi blurts out and Taehyung freezes for a second before pulling away to look up at Yoongi. There are still tremors running through his body and he sniffs and for a moment Yoongi thinks he ruined it.
“Hu-Hyung, that’s a really good question,” is what Taehyung says and he looks like he is actually thinking about it. His voice sounds strained and he is obviously trying to the fact that he is crying. Taehyung never likes to cry in front of others. The two of them are very similar in that aspect.
Taehyung hands start to play with the collar of Yoongi’s shirt and it’s – again – stressful. “Wouldn’t that hurt, though? I mean, I want them to have fun and chase their dreams, but safety first.”
Taehyung looks so genuine, so honestly worried about hypothetical giraffes playing a fucking ball sport with their necks, Yoongi melts.
They continue to talk about this, really getting into the technicalities of it and whenever another thunder sounds over their heads, Yoongi quickly makes sure to ask another ridiculous question until the storm ever so slowly calms down.
Eventually, only the rain remains and Taehyung seems much calmer. He’s still hugging Yoongi close and Yoongi almost got used to the feeling. (That’s a lie. He wanted to set himself on fire whenever Taehyung squeezed him.)
They fall into silence and Taehyung only occasionally lets out a sniff and Yoongi almost fell asleep when Taehyung pokes cheek.
“Hmm,” Yoongi hums without opening his eyes, sleep just around the corner.
“Thank you… I know I probably totally annoyed you and you were already asleep and I woke you up and got into your bed and took up your space and made you talk about a national giraffe lacrosse team—“
“Taehyung—“
“— And you probably don’t even think giraffes are qualified enough for something like this, like, how would they travel to the games? Which animals would they play against? You don’t even care about that, but you still talked to me about that and I—it means so much to me, you mean a lot to me, you know? I don’t know why you would even do that for me.”
Yoongi opens his eyes and turns his head and he finds Taehyung right there in front of him.
Taehyung opens his mouth to start rambling again and before Yoongi, well, Yoongi does something. Maybe because he’s tired. Maybe the giraffe talk got to him. Maybe it’s Taehyung’s beautiful face right in front him and his arms wrapped tightly around him. Maybe it’s just to make him stop talk.
Yoongi is stressed.
“I like you.”
Taehyung pauses and he looks stunned for second. “I, uh, like you too?”
Yoongi’s face feels on fire and he wants to run out of the room and hide somewhere. Far away. “Right.” He says and he closes his eyes again and hopes that sleep will take him and never give him back.
“Hyung.” Taehyung pokes his cheek again and this time Yoongi just decides to play dead and hope it will work.
Of course it doesn’t.
“Hyung… open your eyes.”
“No.”
“It’s really important that you do.”
Yoongi still refuses and for a moment nothings happens and, wow, he thinks to himself, this actually worked? But then Yoongi feels a hand on his cheek turning his face and a soft pair of lips brushing over his.
Yoongi’s eyes snap open and he gapes at Taehyung who is still hovering close with a small smile. “I said I like you too and you just acted dead,” Taehyung explained as if it was obvious.
“You—But I—and you?” Yoongi stutters, trying to comprehend what the fuck just happened here. All he comes up with, however, is that he either fell asleep or slipped into an alternative dimension where Taehyung kissing him is a regular occurrence.
“I like you too, hyung.”
Yoongi flushes and still tries to find the words – any words – to articulate what is going through his mind right now. The problem is, his mind is pretty empty. Wiped out to be exact.
“Can we kiss again? For realsies?”
“Real—realsies?”
Taehyung nods and Yoongi decides to hell with it all. This is probably a dream anyway.
Yoongi reaches out to hold Taehyung’s face in his hand and moves forward to bring their faces together. Yoongi moves slow, incredibly slow and apparently too slow for Taehyung who closes the distance and presses their lips together.
A wave of warmth washes over Yoongi and he curls and wiggles his toes when Taehyung starts moving his lips against Yoongi’s.
It’s a short kiss, too short for Yoongi’s taste and he chases after Taehyung’s lips to give him another peck and Taehyung giggles against his mouth. “We should try to sleep,” Taehyung says and Yoongi frowns.
“I’m pretty sure this is a dream, so I am already asleep.”
“Nah,” Taehyung grins as Yoongi tries to process it. “100% real.”
“Well, you’ll have to prove that after we wake up,” Yoongi insists and the entire thing feels so surreal, he can’t believe he is just casually chatting with Taehyung after kissing him and both of them confessing to each other. Another sign that this is all a dream.
Yoongi turns on his side and curls up into a ball, his hands going between his knees and Taehyung wraps himself around him like a giant spoon.
“I like you, hyung.”
“I like you, too.”
“This isn’t a dream.”
“Sure.”
Taehyung grins into Yoongi’s neck.
When Yoongi wakes up a few hours later and finds Taehyung lying next to him, smiling lazily, and softly kissing his lips, Yoongi calmly gets up and then proceeds into his bathroom to hide for at least two hours and scream inside his shower.
