Maybe This Life is the Best

Summary:

Warning for minor book spoilers and potential show spoilers (although we don't know how it will end)

Qin and Duang are very much in love, and their dog, Khonfu, has become a bit of a celebrity because she is so adorable.

Notes:

This fic is based mostly on the book, but I imagine them interacting the way they do in the show.

Full disclosure that I haven't finished episode 11, I had to pause to write this :P But I don't think there will be anything that doesn't fit in canon. I have finished the book, but I have a feeling that the show isn't going to go as far into their relationship and I don't see them getting Khonfu within the parts I haven't seen yet. (I could be wrong, and I hope I am because she is adorable!)

Edit - I am so glad that they got Khonfu! Her scene was too short though :( I needed more of them as a family!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“I think I might buy Khonfu a new collar.” Qin says as he walks hand in hand with Duang, their cute corgi bounding around in front of them as they slowly walk through the park.

“But you just bought her one last week.” Duang protests, but only lightly because he would let his boyfriend get away with anything he wants, and they both know it.

“Our daughter deserves the best.” Qin says, smiling his smile that is reserved only for Khonfu, his eyes crinkling in a way that he would never show around anyone else, and Duang feels his heart warm. He will never stop being thankful that chasing Qin for so long was successful, never stop loving that they now shared a home, and had made a family when they got Khonfu, or rather Qin brought her home.

Duang nods in agreement, watching their daughter as she jumps around, chasing something that he can’t see. He can’t help but find her adorable and he loves seeing the way that Qin babies her, his soft side so clear when he is ruffling her fur, praising her. But Duang is possessive of her, just like he is of Qin, because Khonfu has become a bit of a celebrity on campus and they rarely manage a walk without being photographed. Not that Duang minds, but Qin is getting fed up with his nickname, even if Duang secretly thinks it suits him.

Even as Duang thinks about it, he sees a girl with her phone out, chatting with her friend excitedly and pointing at his precious daughter. She concentrates for a second clearly taking a picture, before her eyes connect with Duang’s and she blushes, pulling her friend away by the arm. Duang is secretly grateful that they won’t be approaching, he is fine with people stroking Khonfu sometimes but he likes this alone time with Qin to be uninterrupted.

They walk for a few more minutes in contented silence when both of their phones buzz. Qin is faster, pulling his from his pocket and letting out a groan.

“Tong has just messaged that our picture has been posted in that group again.” Qin says exasperated.

“I saw it being taken.” Duang admits. “But I can’t believe she was that fast.”

Qin turns his phone around to show Duang the photo. Duang’s eyes are caught on Qin for a second, his boyfriend looking so content it makes his heart flutter. He is the one making him look so happy. But then his eyes fall on himself and he looks grumpy. The message below the picture says ‘Papa Duang and Mama Qin walking their cute daughter Khonfu but possessive Papa does not want to be interrupted. No stroking Khonfu today 🙁

“Did you read it?” Duang asks his boyfriend, trying not to laugh at how accurate they were.

Qin turns his phone to read and immediately smirks, clearly ignoring the fact that they are still insisting on calling him the mama despite his protests. Duang is used to his subdued reactions when they are in public, but he knows that Qin is laughing inside, knows that if they were back at their house, he would be laughing out loud. Even the thought of the beautiful sound of Qin’s laugh gives him butterflies. He gives Qin’s hand a squeeze and his boyfriend sends him a quizzical look.

“Nothing, just thinking about how perfect you are for me.” Duang says with a wide smile.

“You are so cheesy.” Qin replies, but his eyes shine in a way that shows he likes it, and Duang knows it too, knows that he can make Qin blush still by telling him how much he loves him in the most cheesy way possible.

The sun is starting to make the heat unbearable and Duang glances at his boyfriend, knowing that he doesn’t deal well with the heat.

“Should we head home?” Duang asks and Qin nods.”I’ll drive.”

They get in the car, Qin making sure that Khonfu is safely in the back, while Duang places the iced coffee they grabbed for Qin in the cup holder. Qin slides into the seat beside him and they share a brief smile. Duang reaches over Qin, making his boyfriend pause before relaxing and placing a small kiss on Duang’s cheek. Duang grabs Qin’s seatbelt to fasten it for his boyfriend that loves to be treated like a princess, but not before he places a kiss on Qin’s lips. Qin immediately grabs him and pulls him in for a deeper kiss, both of them lost in each other for a moment, before Khonfu barks at them from the back seat. They separate and Duang chuckles before running a knuckle over Qin’s cheek.

“I love you.” He says, his eyes glittering as he stares into Qin’s.

Qin doesn’t respond in words, but the smile that lights up his face makes it clear that he loves Duang too, it’s a smile that he doesn’t show to anyone else. Duang kisses Qin’s nose lightly before he fastens his seatbelt too, and they start to make their way back home.
