Work Text:

A soft mumbling fills the air, it falls into empty ears as no one is around to listen, but that's not a problem, for their prayers are not anyone but MePhone4.

Cammy is praying again, but not his usual prayers, not like the ones they do at their self-made altar with shaky drawings of his God. No, Cammy is praying because he wants forgiveness.

For you see, Cammy is about to commit a sin.

He's devoted, he's loyal and he spreads the word like no one else does (because no one else does that), but at the end of the day, Cammy is still a simple object. Imperfect, impure and a sinner by nature, all of them are, Cammy is simply the only one that prays for salvation.

What makes him feel a twist on their stomach is that sinning has become a routine; he shouldn't even be walking to where he's going if he knows it's wrong, they should've repent and turn their head away. But their feet never stop moving.

Poppy… They must have put a curse on them, that has to be it. Why else would Cammy be walking in their direction if that's not the case, why would he be searching for that devil if not under the influence of a spell.

Poppy is the spawn of evil, they have his face, his mannerisms, they're the same species of object, one had to be blind to not notice how they're clearly a seed from his remains, how that seed even came to grow in sacred lands is still a mystery to all of them, and a mystery Cammy has to figure out if they want to cleanse this place.

They can see the devil in the distance, his lens adjusts to see them better, they're sitting on a patch of grass, tinkering with Lord knows what, Cammy wouldn't be surprised if it was something to bring damnation onto the others. He takes another step closer, ready to scold them, call them out.

But then Poppy turns around and smiles, and suddenly all barriers Cammy held are melting before their eyes, all the prayers for protection turn into nothing as the corn gets up and runs to him, talking non-stop about the robot they've been trying to build, everything else goes quiet and Cammy can only listen to their voice.

When Poppy speaks the words come out soft and excited, their eyes shine with pride and joy of their own accomplishments, their husks move swiftly around as they shift and pull Cammy closer to take a better look, the corn doesn't look like a creature of evil at all, and the wrong mind could even mistake them for a fallen angel.

This devilspawn is stronger than he gave them credit for, and his foolishness is what will bring Cammy into ruin; on the other hand, think on the bright side, is actually good that Cammy was the one to walk into the corn's trap; any other object would've fallen into their charms without thinking twice, but not him, he sees through their facade, he knows about their true nature and plans behind those smiles. They're the one keeping the devil too occupied to harm any other.

So Cammy humours them, they keep the corn company and give insight on how they could improve their creations; when they invite him to a walk on the forest Cammy complies; when they tell a joke Cammy laughs; he keeps watch on them until late at night, when the stars come out; when they lie down on the grass to look at the night sky he does the same by their side.

When Poppy starts muttering chants of love Cammy hums in agreement, not that he feels the same, of course he doesn't, it's an act, a farce to fool the corn into thinking they have the upper hand, and yet, Cammy can't help but want to believe their words are true, genuine, and they sound and seem like it, because Poppy turns and nuzzles against them, closing their eyes and relaxing under the moonlight, Cammy stares at them, and then nuzzles back, but doesn't close his eyes, not letting his guard down even a second.

He instead looks at the stars again, contemplating the lengths of his own mistakes and mortal skin. What a disgusting sinner he is. Cammy starts praying again.

“Lord forgive me for I have sinned.”
