Rick had noticed he was falling for Evelyn when he found himself constantly wanting to make her happy. It wasn't just physical attraction; her smile was enough to make him feel like the luckiest person in the world. He carried her books and listened to her archaeology lectures with a big silly grin that made Evelyn stop everything and kiss him. There was an affinity between the two that Rick hadn't expected in a relationship.
Rick and Evelyn dated for a few weeks until, on a starry night with the moonlight illuminating the lovers, O'connell knelt before her and asked her to marry him. Evelyn's cry of joy could be heard throughout the city, her brother had said, his eyes brimming with tears.
Rick's heart felt like it was about to burst, and nothing bad could shake him. The man couldn't remember the last time he felt like this, with a calm mind and feeling truly happy. His cheeks ached from smiling so much, and he found himself singing around the house (Jonathan asked O'Connell to let him know in advance the next time he sang to protect his poor ears; Evelyn says Rick is adorable when he sings).
Evelyn, of course, was also radiating happiness. She would randomly squeal with joy, sometimes scaring her coworkers to death, and spent much of her free time in endless displays of affection for Rick.
So, when the two got engaged, Rick wanted to make sure that a small and simple ceremony was what she truly desired. They were both orphans, and Rick didn't care about the size of the ceremony, as long as Evelyn was the person he would marry.
But he wanted to make sure that day was perfect for her. So Rick brought up the subject during breakfast with Evelyn and Jonathan. Rick was already living with his fiancée and sharing a bed with her; thankfully, Jonathan didn't make any comment judging his sister's love life. He only made jokes like "kissing again?" but he was clearly happy for his sister and Rick.
"Old mum here is just following the family tradition," Jonathan joked, gently nudging his sister's arm. "Mum and Dad also had a private wedding; they just invited some of their friends and mum's parents".
"Your dad's family didn't come to the wedding?" Rick asked them. He had already noticed that Evelyn and Jonathan didn't have contact with many relatives, especially on their father's side.
Evelyn shook her head negatively. "Our father had decided to cut off contact with them. He said, well, whoever disrespected Mum wasn't allowed to be in his life. His relatives are very unpleasant." Evy pursed her lips as she recalled that, when their parents died, she and Jonathan spent a few years with a relative of their father until they were old enough to flee to Cairo. She had spoken to her fiancé about this after they returned from Hamunaptra.
Their parents would never have allowed it, but the family was living in London, so an uncle of their father's was given custody of them and the house.
Rick noticed his Evy's sad expression and gently squeezed her hand. "You're right. A small ceremony is perfect. And then we'll focus on our honeymoon in France." He winked at Evelyn, who smiled broadly and blushed.
"Exactly! Really, Rick, I don't care about the ceremony itself, but about the fact that I'm going to marry you. A simple ceremony is enough," Evelyn said before giving Rick a kiss on the cheek. "I know we're a small family, but you will never feel alone again."
Rick placed his hands on Evy's waist and rested his forehead against hers. "I haven't felt alone since I met you. I'm looking forward to our life together, Evelyn Carnahan soon to be O'Connell."
"So it's decided," Jonathan said jovially, "we'll invite few friends and mum's cousin who lives here in Cairo. And Ardeth, of course". Jonathan had suggested that the couple invite Ardeth, and they both agreed. For some reason, Jonathan always managed to find him on the streets of Cairo and quickly summon him to the ceremony.
So, in a simple ceremony with 8 guests, Rick and Evelyn got married. Who knows how many adventures this couple will face? The important thing is that they'll be in it together.
