Work Text:
Asagi was sitting on the floor of Fuji’s house, his mind completely blank as he waited for the girl to come out of the bathroom.
This week had been really hectic, both for Asagi—who had exams and college assignments—and for Fuji, who somehow ended up with the worst work schedule possible at the bar that week.
They were both tired, their heads full. Adult life really wasn’t easy and demanded a lot from them.
“Fuji-san! You’re back.” The blond boy smiled innocently without even thinking. Fuji could even say she almost felt embarrassed by that silly smile.
“I’m back.” she said, as expressionless as always. “What were you doing?”
“Uhm… actually, nothing. I was just waiting for you!” he said, getting up and walking over to her side. “What are we gonna do today? Did you start writing another manga? Or do you wanna do photoshoots?” Asagi asked excitedly, like a dog getting taken out for a walk.
Fuji sighed.
“I haven’t even thought about anything yet… I had a lot of work this week.” she said in her usual low, tired voice. “Sorry, I don’t really have anything to keep you entertained right now.” Fuji sat down on her own bed, followed by Asagi, who sat beside her.
“Hm… then what can we do, Fuji-san?” Asagi asked.
“We can talk, if you want.” Fuji replied, leaning back against the wall. “How was your day?”
Asagi scooted right up next to Fuji and automatically held her hand.
“It was fun, even with the exams! You should’ve seen it, Fuji-san—today Hagi was wondering if he might be bi…? Oh! Bisexual.” Asagi said with his usual carefree smile.
“Why? Did something happen?” the girl asked, resting her head on Asagi’s shoulder.
“He likes Kohaku! But he thinks he might be bisexual because of the cross-dressing you guys do.” he explained.
“Hm… I see.” Fuji grew a little restless, which was unusual, considering she rarely showed much expression.
Asagi looked at her and noticed.
“Did something happen?” he asked, worried.
“Nothing.” she replied, with a bitter taste in her mouth.
Fuji thought for a few seconds. Would telling him this change anything between them? Not that they were in a relationship or anything, but what they had felt genuinely natural.
She didn’t want to lose that. At the same time, she didn’t want to hide this.
“Asagi.” Fuji called out in a low, slightly hoarse voice.
“Yes!?” He straightened up and looked at her.
“I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this… actually, it’s kind of weird to talk about with you…” she sighed tiredly. “I didn’t really feel the need to tell you, so just think of this as a fun fact.”
Asagi looked at her, curious.
“You can tell Hagi he’s probably right about being bisexual.” she held his hand tightly. “None of us are really cisgender. Suou is non-binary, Kohaku… well, I’m not entirely sure, but I think she might be agender.”
“Oh… oh…” Asagi made small sounds of surprise. “What does that mean?”
Fuji blinked in disbelief and then started laughing genuinely.
“Suou doesn’t really see herself as either a man or a woman. She doesn’t like putting herself into a gender role and prefers something more neutral. As for Kohaku, she doesn’t really fit into anything—her gender expression is more masculine most of the time because of work, but in the end, clothes don’t really define much.” Fuji explained.
Asagi was impressed. It was the first time Fuji had spoken more than ten words in one sentence.
“Oh, that’s cool…? But you said none of you are… so that means you too?” Asagi asked, confused.
“Asagi, I’m gender-fluid.” Fuji shrank slightly into herself. “I like how I look when I’m cross-dressing, and I also like how I feel when I’m not.” she lowered her head.
Wow… this was harder than she thought it would be.
“I like being feminine and masculine—sometimes more one, sometimes more the other.”
“Th-That’s awesome! Fuji-san, you’re so cool.” Asagi said, grabbing her hands excitedly.
“You don’t mind?” Fuji asked.
“Why would I mind? You’re one of the coolest people I know!” Asagi said, hugging her. “I like you when you’re masculine and when you’re feminine—none of that bothers me!”
Fuji could swear Asagi would end up killing her one day. Where did she even find someone this precious?
And so, for the first time, Fuji truly hugged Asagi back.
“Thank you, Asagi…” she leaned in and kissed his cheek. “You just gave me a great idea for my new doujinshi. I’ll need to start writing tonight.”
“Can I sleep here?” Asagi asked.
“Yes, of course.” Fuji nodded.
“Hey, Fuji-san…” he tugged at her sleeve. “Could you do that again?” Asagi pointed shyly at his own cheek.
Fuji looked at him and blinked. Was he really asking for another kiss?
“I can.” She leaned in again and kissed his cheek once more—then his forehead, his head…
Fuji didn’t even notice she was gently covering his whole face in kisses.
She pulled away, and Asagi started laughing.
“That tickles!” he said, laughing.
Fuji smiled genuinely at that. She really was starting to like that silly boy.
