Chapter Text
Sunny sat at the dinner table at his and his mother’s new apartment, his hands folded together as he waited for his mother to finish dishing out the food, their new cat, mochi; a small calico kitten his mother had brought Sunny a month ago, she was more sociable then Mewo, but she still adored Sunny.
“Here you go, Dear.” Sunny’s mother said putting the plate of rice and a piece of fish and a few vegetables in of him, Sunny watched the plate before picking up his fork and mumbling out a “thank you”
Sunny and his mother sat in silence as they ate, Sunny wasn’t really hungry, he never was, but he needed to eat for energy. He can’t just sleep all day anymore, he has school. Sure, he didn’t do much there but he still needed to be awake enough to listen.
“So.. how’s school been?” His mother asked awkwardly drumming her fingers on the table, watching her son for any type of reaction.
“Fine..” Sunny muttered out pushing the rice on his plate around with his fork, his other hand folded in his lap.
His mother frowned softly and took a breath in before continuing, “Have.. you talked to anyone? Made any new friends?” She asked hopefully, her constant stare made Sunny shift uncomfortable.
Sunny looked up at his mother before looking back down and shaking his head, “I go to school, I come back home.” He said simply, Sunny didn’t talk to anyone—Except for his mother.. and Mochi, he didn’t do anything at school, he just.. existed.
His mother sighed and held her forehead, she didn’t know how to talk to her son anymore. He wasn’t a 12 year old that would be happy with sitting in the backyard with his older sister and those friends of his anymore, he was 16, and she didn’t know how to talk to him.
She took another breath before looking at him again, “Could you try? Talk to anyone, make some new friends.” she asked reaching over the table and gently grabbing his hand that was holding the fork.
“I don’t want new friends.” Sunny said quietly putting his fork down and pulling his hand away, wrapping his arms around his stomach, looking down at the ground.
His mother frowned and pulled back as well, her face turning stern, “Well you’re not going back to that town. Not after what that boy did.” She said firmly looking over at Sunny’s eyepatch, his mother didn’t know the full story, she just knows she came back to that town and her baby was in the hospital because of an old friend.
Sunny lowered his head, hiding his eyepatch underneath his overgrown bangs. He hated when his mother talked about Basil like that, like he was a monster. He wasn’t, but Sunny couldn’t say that, he had trouble standing up for himself at school, he couldn’t do it for someone else. Especially to his Mother.
“Sunny.” His mother suddenly called out, he looked up at her from his bangs, his dark brown eye meeting hers. “I’m sorry, I’ve been a horrible Mother,” She said softly, taking a breath in before continuing, “But I swear that will change, you won’t just stay in your room all day.” She promised standing up from the table and grabbing her plate, walking to the kitchen.
Sunny Watched her before looking back at his plate, he sighed and picked his fork back up. Slowly finishing the rice and some of the peppers on his plate. The only sound being Mochi’s soft purring and The sound of the sink, the room was tense.
“I’m going to watch a movie tonight, would you like to join me?” She asked as she washed her plate, looking over her shoulder at her son.
He didn’t answer vocally, he just shook his head and continued to eat quietly. Only the fish and some peppers and carrots on his plate, but he didn’t feel like eating anymore.
He stood up and carried his plate to the kitchen, grabbing a container and storing his fish away—He could take it for lunch tomorrow, it would be better then the slop the fed them. He put his plate down for a second so he could put his container away before his mother grabbed it.
“I’ll wash it, sweetie. Go to bed.” She said softly, grabbing his hand kissing his forehead before letting go.
He nodded and wiped his forehead with his sleeve, picking up Mochi and walking to his room, keeping his head low as he did. Pushing the door open he didn’t bother to change out of his day clothes—a habit he had acquired from those four years, before getting into his bed. Mochi jumping on the bed after him, cuddling up to his back.
Sunny stared at the clock for a while, unable to close his eye. 9:34 pm, the clock read, usually he would be sleeping before Nine. But, he just couldn’t sleep. Because now, he had no dreams, all he had was darkness and the occasional warm field. He couldn’t stand it, now he couldn’t even see his friends in his dreams. He couldn’t see them anywhere..
Sunny sat up in bed, staring down at mochi he slowly got up and walked over to his tiny desk—Where his father’s old computer sat, something he took from the old house. He took the boxes off the desk and sat down, he wasn’t the most tech savvy person ever but he knew how to work the computer.
He powered it up and turned on the mouse, the bright screen blinding him for a few moments. He hesitatingly grabbed the mouse and opened the main page, staring at the bright multicoloured “Google” that sat on the corner of the page.
He looked behind him before hesitantly typing in “MySpace” into the search bar, he didn’t really know what “MySpace” was, but some kids at his school were talking about it at lunch.
Sunny was immediately overwhelmed with everything he could click, he didn’t know what to do now. He stared at the screen before deciding he would sign up, the mouse hovering over the login button before hesitantly clicking it.
He made a normal login—Sun_Suzuki, just using his full name before looking around on the site. He looked around his room again before moving closer to the computer and typing “Montoya” into the search bar. He scrolled through the results, what was he doing? This was stupid, he should just go back to bed.
But then, he froze, “Kel Montoya” the screen read. He was on here, Sunny clicked his profile quicker than he could think. His vision immediately filled with Pictures of Kel, he sighed and leaned on his hand, looking through the photos of Kel.
The newest one was of him smiling widely with his arm wrapped around a girl with black hair—Who looked nervous and confused, but she still smiled. Her red glasses crooked a bit on her face.
Sunny felt something bubble up inside him, he didn’t know what it was, but he didn’t like it. He didn’t like that girl was hanging out with his best friend.
He powered off the computer and pushed away from his desk, That girl probably didn’t know anything about Kel—Unlike Sunny, why did she get to hangout with him? It was.. unfair.
Sunny shook his head and stood back up, actually taking off his sweater and putting on a tanktop before getting back in bed.
His hands folded on his stomach as he stared up at the roof, glaring at the darkness intently—like it was hiding a secret from him.
At some point he fell asleep, his eyes closed and he drifted off.
The soft sound of wind blew in his ears before he opened his eye, his vision filled with sunlight and flowers with tall grass blowing in the wind. The field.
He sat up in the grass, the field was vast and empty, the only thing being the flowers and tall grass. But now, a tree stood in the distance, a clearing in the grass.
He felt drawn to it, as he pushed through the tall grass the sound of a violin filled his ears, it was soft, barely noticeable.
As he stepped closer to the tree the soft sound of the strum of a guitar paired with the violin, the two instruments working together perfectly.
He closed his eyes as he walked, the wind blowing through his hair. But he stopped in front of the clearing, his eye now drawn to the figure in front of him.
The brown hair flying in the air along with the orange jersey, their fingers softly strumming on the guitar.
Sunny didn’t want to ruin the moment, so, he just stared. Sitting down on the grass and watching from afar, a soft—Almost dreamy, sigh leaving him.
