"My rut?" I was woefully confused and growing irritable about it. More proof that matters had progressed further than I'd thought. "My preferences? Fool, what are you rambling on about? What in the world does any of this mean?"
"I'm in heat," the Fool spat out, agony spiking tightly and painfully in his words. "You need to go, Fitz, because I am in heat, and it will make your rut far worse to be around me. I fear, my friend, that it already has."
When grief precipitates Fitz's first rut following the loss of his beloved companion Nighteyes, he receives comfort from the unlikeliest of sources, or perhaps, the most likely source of all.

"All is well with you?" he asked, cuddling near, Burrich's earring cradled delicately on the pillow between us.
It was, for he was there with me.
"I feel complete, as I never have before," I told him honestly, and he smiled.
"As do I," he agreed, and shut his eyes. My skin was the furthest thing from afire. No desolation swathed my soul. Rest came easily, and my fever had broken. I was home, with my mate, and happier for it, and did not resent the world at all.
