Ilya held his gaze. A lot had changed. Shane’s jet black hair had grown out, the unkempt ends grazing his shoulders. He looked as though he had abandoned grooming entirely, yet the rugged look worked for him, emphasized by the dark shadow of stubble along his jaw. But it was his eyes that made Ilya pause. They were still brown, still sharp, but quieter now, like something in them had dulled. The sight stirred an uncomfortable familiarity in Ilya, like looking at a reflection of someone he used to be, and that thought bothered him more than he expected.
