“They say King Edward loves him best of all his children, though he tries not to show it,” Feyre says quietly. “He’s just returned from campaign in France. The war goes poorly there, but the Duke distinguished himself. He always does.”
Something in her sister’s tone makes Nesta glance at her sharply. “You’ve met him?”
“Only in passing. He doesn’t notice girls like us.” Feyre’s smile is rueful. “He’s married, of course. The Lady Blanche of Lancaster. She’s one of the greatest heiresses in England. They say it’s a love match, which is rare enough.”
Of course he’s married. Powerful men like that belong to women with fortunes and lineages and beauty refined by generations of careful breeding. They definitely do not belong to orphaned girls with empty purses and patched gowns.
