nothing gold ever stays

Summary:

so I was listening to a yt playlist about yearning and in the comments I saw a pretty cool couple sentences (which form the first paragraph of the note) and I was suddenly actually motivated to write a very small thing

Work Text:

It had been years since Neil had left him. He was gone. His ashes scattered away with the wind.

And yet, as Todd picked up the pen, for the last time, he couldn't help but write only one note. To the boy who got away. The one who left him. The one who pulled the trigger.

Dear Neil,

Years went by. There is no such second I've spent without yearning for your presence. The feelings that you left me are epitome of torment. Did you think this heart could ever forget who awakened it?

I've spent every waking day yearning for you. I've missed you so desperately. I longed to tell you all the words I had not had the courage to voice.

In the words of Robert Frost:

“Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leaf’s a flower
But only so an hour
Then leaf subsides to leaf
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to say
Nothing gold can stay.”

We were gold. We could never stay. Maybe in another universe. Maybe in another time, we weren't damned to end like this.

Love you forever
Todd
