Work Text:
High school was about to end which meant you only had limited time to hang out with your closest friend… Mikey.
You guys had been friends since the start of middle school and stayed friends until the senior year of high school almost until graduation.
Your family knew him and treated him as family as well with his family even his friend group knew about you and were pretty close to you and your friend group knew him as well.
Time flew by quickly in senior year; everything felt so fast you couldn’t even pause to remember the small moments with Mikey.
Like the late nights where you guys call when you both couldn’t sleep even during school nights, when both your parents yelled at you to go to sleep because they could hear you through the walls. The late-night study session for a big test you guys both needed to take.
Although you guys have always been close there was always something in the air that kind of made things awkward if you guys were really close or grazing each other's hands on accident that made both of you guys blush and be in awkward silence.
You guys were currently in Mikey’s car eating some greasy fast food together after school, after a horrendous test in math that had killed your moods.
The last month of high school before you guys both depart from each other after years of being together almost every day. Maybe you guys depart from each other forever and you guys never talked again which made your head sink.
It felt kind of unreal you never really thought about how you were possibly going to lose your best friend because of school, never really thinking about how much you were going to miss his presence that comforted you through thick and thin.
You were seriously going to miss him a lot. Almost mourning him.
Looking down on your soggy fries you sighed your mind spiraling about college.
“What’s wrong Y/N?” Mikey’s soft voice laced with concern snapped you out of your trance.
“Huh? Oh… it’s nothing, no big deal.” You made up an excuse on the spot knowing Mikey wouldn’t believe it, not even one bit of it.
Mikey frowned, “Cmon Y/N, I know you’re lying to me just tell me— please?”
You groaned your head hitting the headrest of the car, “It’s just— well we’re gonna go to college and I’m just gonna miss you and… I’m scared we’re gonna stop talking.” You confessed, your heart felt heavy, tears welling up in the corners of your eyes.
“Hey hey hey— don’t cry Y/N I promise we’ll keep in touch no matter what plus, I wouldn’t know what to do without you nagging me,” Mikey said, almost comforting mixed with tease, cupping your cheeks and wiping away the tears that spilled onto your face.
Rolling your eyes, pushing him away playfully, “Oh shut up!” Mikey laughed moving away dramatically and gasping all dramatic as well like you betrayed him.
Y’know, you never really noticed how kind Mikey was, especially to you, and how he practically knew your order front to back no matter where you guys went. He always offered snacks or even bought you your favorite drink and snacks if you were upset about something.
He always consolidated you especially with boy stuff, he would rub your back as you cried on his shoulder complaining over a boy who broke your heart.
The perfect boy was right there in front of you… It was Mikey, you slowly started to realize all the butterflies you got from him that you brushed off so many times.
Maybe you loved Mikey all along, maybe that was why you didn’t really like the boys you dated or talked to over the years.
What the hell it was close to graduation might as well confess, plus you probably wouldn’t see him again, “Mikey… I need to tell you something.”
Mikey’s face was confused but he nodded. He adjusted himself so he was facing you, “Sure, what’s up Y/N you ok?”
You sighed nodding not daring to even look at him in fear he had a disgusted look on his face.
“I’m fine it’s just— uhm Mikey I dunno how to say but I really like you! And I know we’re just friends and I don’t wanna ruin our friendship but I couldn’t wait any longer—” your eyes widen
A pair of somewhat chapped lips was against yours, and not just someone’s lips… it was Mikey. Everything just felt perfect. You didn’t want it to stop at all, wrapping your arms around his neck pulling him closer to you even though the center console was blocking his way of him wrapping his lanky arms around you.
After a few seconds, you guys pulled away, “I like you too Y/N, not even I love you…” Mikey said, heat rushed to your face as you smiled nervously, “S-s-seriously?” You stammered
Mikey nodded, “Yeah… ever since junior year of high school but I was too scared to tell you.”
You smiled at him kissing his cheek, “Well, it’s ok because you’re all mine now even if we’re 1,000 miles away from each other.”
“Isn’t that a bit exaggerated? We’re only 100 miles apart from each other.” You rolled your eyes, “Same thing, that's still so far..” you frowned
“I know but it’s still far away… I won’t be able to see you every day, or even hear your voice every day… how am I gonna live!” You pouted
Mikey laughed, shaking his head, adjusting his glasses, “I’ll call you everyday I promise even if I’m bummed out from school work, plus I don’t think I’d be able to sleep if I don’t listen to your voice every day.” He said kissing you deeply this time.
Taking every sense he could, your scent, how your lips tasted on his, how your arms wrapped around him perfectly.
You guys were just made for each other even from far away from college.
