Christmas in June

Summary:

On a warm June night, the pups gather on the hill to watch a meteor shower. But this evening will offer something much more

Notes:

I chose to keep Zuma’s speech impediment to stay true to his character - it’s just so cute ^^

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Night fell over Adventure Bay, painting the sky in various shades of orange and red. On this warm June evening, everyone was filled with anticipation, for very soon the meteor shower was set to begin. It seemed as if the entire Bay was holding its breath.

Near the Lookout, on the side of the hill, the gray pup was carefully hanging glass bulbs that gifted the space with warmth and comfort through their soft yellow light. He stood on his hind paws, tying a garland to a wooden beam. His tail flickered from side to side in anticipation of a good evening as he hung the lights. Today would be a chance he couldn't afford to miss again.

Very close by, near a small crackling campfire, Chase was diligently smoothing out a large blanket, trying to straighten every corner. His focus revealed a hint of his typical perfectionism, because tonight, everything had to be just right.

When the battle with the blanket was finally won, Chase glanced back to see Skye approaching, carrying a snack basket in her teeth. She ran as lightly as the clouds drifting across the horizon. Chase met her with a wide smile on his muzzle.

"I hope you didn't pack only carrot sticks," he teased.

Skye grumbled playfully and tossed a soft pillow at him. One that was already resting among the others on the blanket.

"And I hope you brought more than just a blanket?" She tilted her head to the side.

"Well, on my part, I've secured the comfort of our most tender spots," the German Shepherd blushed, desperately searching for a place to hide his embarrassed gaze.

"And what are we going to drink? I hope you didn't bring just water."

"Only water... Well, I figured your presence would already add an unforgettable flavor, and nothing else would be needed," Chase winked.

"Aha, so as usual, you can't do anything without me? I knew it, so I grabbed the bottles of juice Ryder prepared this morning," she said, acting as if she hadn't understood Chase's joke, though in reality, she was only playing along.

They shared a moment of laughter, and in that instant, their eyes met. They sat down close together, shoulder to shoulder, and watched the sky turn a deep crimson.

Nearby, Everest was busy arranging pillows on a blanket that had already been spread out. Once she finished her task, she waved a paw at Marshall, who was running toward her from the forest. He arrived out of breath, hauling a small stack of firewood for the campfire in the gray pup's little trailer, which he had kindly shared.

"Sorry I'm late! I wanted to bring even more, but Rubble said it wasn't necessary. There was also a little incident, but I think Rubble will be here soon too," the dalmatian said, rubbing the back of his head with his paw and smiling widely.

"Another incident?!" Everest chuckled and winked. "I hope he's okay..."

"He just sort of flew off a branch when I tried to knock down a tree... I don't think he'll be mad," Marshall suddenly decided to change the subject. "You know, when you're around, I feel like nothing can hurt me anymore. When you truly love someone, there's nothing to hide," Marshall rattled off, instantly turning a deep shade of red.

Everest stopped whatever she was doing, and her eyes widened instantly. She lowered her head slightly, and the smile on her muzzle became soft and warm.

"You know... I thought you would never say that," she whispered breathlessly. "I've been waiting for this for a very long time..."

"I wanted to say it, but something always got in the way. This just felt like the best moment for it..." the dalmatian replied with relief, pressing his side closely against Everest.

And just then, the first meteor streaked above them. It was so bright that for a fleeting moment, the entire bay was painted in a golden hue of magic.

"There it is," Marshall said, staring enchantedly at the sky. "Our sign."

Everest couldn't believe what was happening. Her breath hitched for a second, and her heart began to race even faster. They sat closer to each other, their paws intertwining, and continued to gaze mesmerized into the vastness of space.

Meanwhile, Zuma approached the hardworking eco pup, bringing the electrical tape he had asked for quite some time ago. Once the bulbs were securely fixed in place, the job was finally finished. Rocky jumped down and, landing on all four paws, sat next to the chocolate lab by the campfire. The two of them fixed their gaze on the vast night sky. There was a little more space between them than they might have liked, but a little less than usual.

"Do you vemembew when we stayed by the campfiwe alone on New Yeaw's?" Zuma asked suddenly.

"Of course I remember... You even brought hot chocolate, and we drank it from the same mug," Rocky replied, blushing as he recalled the past. "And I brought the blanket we huddled under, listening to the crackling of the wood."

"Yeah... And then Wydew called us fow an emewgency mission, and all ouw plans weve messed up," Zuma said, looking down at his paws in disappointment.

"I remember," Rocky whispered sadly. "I remember how I wanted to tell you about my feelings, but..."

"...it didn't wowk out again," Zuma said with a sigh. "And on Valentine's Day, do you vemembew? You pwomised to go to the cafe with all of us, but you weve busy again... To you, some little pawt was mowre impowtant than all of us..."

"I wasn't just busy... I... I was afraid of ruining everything. I didn't want to get in the way of you enjoying an evening that you would have had just as well without me," the eco pup pressed his paws together, as if he were afraid of himself. He felt deeply ashamed of everything he had said.

Zuma lowered his gaze, looking off into the distance. His fur prickled slightly with static, and tears began to well up in his eyes.

"Of couwse, everyone! Evewyone except me..." Zuma shouted, causing everyone nearby to take notice. "Evewy single holiday, evewy moment when you looked at me a little longer ow when you accidentally touched me, you just laughed it off, leaving me without an answew... To me, those weve all impowtant signs fwom you. I waited fow the day you'd finally undewstand, but appawently... we'we just diffewent..."

The heavy silence that followed pointed directly toward yet another failed evening for them. Chase, Skye, Everest, and Marshall pricked up their ears but turned away to give them space. They all understood.

"You know..." Zuma began, then stopped immediately. His voice faltered, as if he were doubting whether to go on, but then he continued anyway. "Maybe enough is enough?"

"Enough of what?" Rocky asked, becoming extremely nervous as he turned to face Zuma directly.

"Pwetending that we'we just fwiends... Pwetending that you actually cawe about talking to me. We've gone thwough so much togethew, spent so many yeaws side by side on the team, and I'm ready to leave you behind. Sowwy fow being a buwden to you all this time." Zuma looked away, staring hollowly at the campfire. "I'm just tiwed, Wocky..."

The laughter of their friends behind them now felt like a mockery. In the distance, waves crashed against the rocks like a heart beating against ribs.

"You were never a burden to me, Zuma. You were my very best friend! I always looked forward to the times we could be alone together, but it didn't always work out the way I wanted..." The eco pup moved closer to the upset chocolate lab.

"Is that why you just left me alone and abandoned me in the tough moments? You chose to just hide fwom evewyone, even fwom those you supposedly cawe about... Awent you contwadicting youwself?" Zuma fixed his gaze directly into the desperate eyes of the gray pup.

"You're right," Rocky whispered. "That wasn't the main reason. I was just afraid... to say..."

Rocky sat even closer to Zuma. He looked at his friend. The one who had been there all this time, who had waited, who had forgiven, who had hoped. And now, he began to realize just how many mistakes he had made.

"I don't want to wait anymore," Rocky whispered into his ear. "Wait here."

Rocky quickly disappeared into the darkness, leaving Zuma alone. The chocolate lab was so upset that he didn't even look at the sky, which was now showered with a multitude of bright flashes... Five minutes later, Zuma was already preparing to leave, but as he turned around, he saw Rocky emerging from the gloom.

"Come with me," the tired eco pup said, reaching out a paw. "From this moment on, I'm going to do everything I should have done..."

Rocky grabbed Zuma's paw and led him straight toward his pup house. Zuma was so puzzled by the gray pup's actions that he didn't know what to expect. Yet, when he reached the spot with Rocky, he saw before him a house decorated with garlands, with a sprig of mistletoe hanging over the door. Rocky, still not letting go of Zuma's paw, turned to him and looked directly into his eyes.

"Do you want to celebwate Chwistmas? Right now?" he asked with a wide smile.

"But it's... summew..." Zuma replied, both baffled and teasing, looking into the glowing eyes of the eco pup.

"But who says we have to wait for December?" Rocky shouted. "Maybe it's time to admit that I've put everything off for far too long. And if I don't say it now, it'll be too late..."

In that wonderful moment, the two bundles of happiness stood beneath the mistletoe, and everything around them went still. Their gazes were intertwined like endless threads, and the whole world stopped for the sake of this moment.

"Let's celebrate Chwistmas... right now," Rocky whispered, taking a step forward. "A Chwistmas just for the two of us."

"How?" the lab asked, still unable to believe his eyes, and then stepped closer until their noses touched.

"The way it should have been a long time ago. I love you! ... Fowgive me fow evewything..."

Rocky moved as close as possible to Zuma, and their lips met in a gentle kiss full of love. Above them hung the mistletoe, the garlands glowed with a soft light, and in the sky, the stars continued to fall.

Behind them on the beach, watching the silhouettes of the two pups in love illuminated by the multicolored glow of the garlands, Chase held Skye close.

"It looks like the magic has arrived," Skye said with a wide smile.

"Now it has for every one of us," he replied, gently kissing his love. They shared the moment together.

Sitting nearby, Marshall and Everest shared the same moment, watching the miracle from afar.

"Do you think everything will be different now?" the husky asked.

"I think we've all grown up, and now everything is definitely going to be alright," he answered, gently kissing Everest on the lips.

And right there, by the eco pup's house, Rocky and Zuma continued to stand together, their paws still intertwined. Above the horizon, in total silence, the brightest star of all carved a path across the sky. Marshall with Everest, and Chase with Skye, gave each other a tender kiss and made their deepest, most heartfelt wishes – to be together forever.

And the stars kept falling, like December snow, each one carrying a piece of that very Christmas and New Year's miracle.

"Make a wish..." Zuma said, lifting his muzzle toward the sky. In that moment, Rocky wasn't looking at the heavens, but straight into Zuma's eyes.

"I already made it," he replied, gently cupping Zuma's muzzle with his paw. "And it's standing right in front of me."

Zuma smiled and didn't make things complicated. He simply decided to give him his most tender kiss.

And on this summer night, where stars took the place of snow and bright lights melted from the warmth of their hearts, two souls finally understood that a miracle is not just a date on a calendar. It arrives exactly when you are ready for it with all your heart and soul. You can have Christmas even in June, as long as your heart is always wrapped in the love of your soulmate.

From this moment on, Chase would stay with Skye forever, never letting her go and loving her with all his heart. Marshall would always hold Everest close, giving his smile only to her every single morning. And Rocky would never again let his beloved Zuma slip away, because that is what Magic truly is.

Love one another!

Where did the inspiration come from? It’s all thanks to the wonderful song "Christmas In June" by AJR.
Interestingly, I wrote this fanfic last year on my birthday in June)
