Work Text:
Donnie was in his lab, taking inventory of the medical equipment. Flu season was just around the corner, and he had to synthesize some of the antidote before that, since normal human ones didn't work for them, but when he was about to start he realized how depleted the medicine cabinet was, which made sense. The last few months were stressful and he really couldn't take stock on his supplies, but this just meant he had to go on a supply run soon.
It was fine, he was due, but with winter so near they shouldn't be out and about too often.
He looked at the inventory list, and started searching for the morphine. Most human medicine didn't work on them, and neither did turtle ones, but they were good springboards to start from, and it never hurt to have some on hand in case April or Casey needed treatment.
Donnie added morphine to his ever growing list.
“Shell, how long ago did I go on a supply run?” He asked himself, after adding antibiotics to the list, too. He moved to the first aid materials after he finished with the medical cabinet. No bandaids, no hydrogen peroxyde, no rubbing alcohol, no thread, they will need new needles, the wire used for shell repair looked like a sad imitation of a roll, and Donnie almost asked himself what the shell happened but…
Yeah. The foot and the Kraang were ruthless and his brothers and him ate up medical resources like they were candy.
He paused for a bit, before doubling the amount on all of the material.
The lab door opened on well oiled hinges- because if Donnie didn't keep it as soundless as possible then he would have Leo on his tail for getting coffee at ten am, when he should be sound asleep.
“Hey Donnie!” April entered with a plastic bag. “I come bearing gifts!” She announced with a smile.
“Oh April, hi!” Donnie said, turning to look at the human. April was a great addition to their little team, she was smart, resourceful and she sucked in Master Splinter's training like a sponge. “Sorry, I'm really busy but you can hang around, just don't touch anything.” It was more for their safety, really, most things in Donnie's lab were dangerous if not handled correctly.
“Yeah okay. Do you have time for a snack break? I brought you some stuff from that Japanese store I told you about.” April set the bag down on the empty shelf next to the lab doors, specifically kept for food storage. The last thing Donnie wanted was contamination, after all.
“I'm almost done, if you want you can go hang out with the others, I'll eat when I get it done. Thanks for that, by the way.” Donnie checked off the burn cream. The container was still mostly full, so he didn't have to worry about it.
“Nah I can wait.” The girl said with a smile, sitting in a chair and letting the lab plunge into a comfortable silence occasionally broken by Donnie's mumbling. April stared at the turtle with dreamy eyes- he was really cute when he was so focused.
“Hey D I was thinking we could hit the surface sometime, I found this real nice skatepark tucked out of-” Casey stepped into the lab, unapologetic and loud as always, and Donnie looked up.
“Oh hi Casey! I was just finishing up taking inventory.” Donnie says, putting the spreadsheet back in its place and folding the list, tucking it into one of the storing compartments on his belt.
“Jones.” April said, her voice strangely cold.
“O'neil.” Casey returned the greeting in equal tone. It was a weird human greeting that Donnie didn't exactly get, but he left them to it. The only thing he, or any of his brothers, knew about humans were from movies and the internet, so not the most reliable stuff.
“Ooo-kay.” Donnie spoke, hoping to break the tension starting to build in the room. “Let's get the snacks to the kitchen, I'm sure the others would love to try them too.” He washed his hands at the small sink and walked to the two humans, grabbing the plastic bag. Casey and April followed after a moment, still glaring at each other.
Honestly, what was their deal?
