The Bouquet on the Windowsill

Summary:

Mr. Milverton likes waking up to the scent of flowers, so Ruskin brings him a bouquet every morning.

Work Text:

Ruskin put the flower bouquet into the vase of the windowsill and watched it for a long moment - long enough so the sweet scent of the roses would get to his nose again and make him feel like he was in the garden. He picked the flowers there during his morning walk, just like he did every day, and he placed them at the window in his employer's bedroom. Mr. Milverton was still asleep, lying in the bed, so he couldn't see them - but Ruskin knew how much the other man loved waking up to the fresh scent of the roses. Mr. Milverton was fond of flowers which was so unlikely for someone so evil like him. But after all, it was not only his evil nature Ruskin thought of when he thought about Mr. Milverton. Mr. Milverton's personality had so many little nuances which were hidden from the public eye whom he deceived, and also, from his bodyguards, who were aware of who he really was. Things only Ruskin knew about - and he worshipped them, one by one.

Mr. Milverton's love for flowers and the ethereal expression of his face when he was near one or when he was walking in the garden with Ruskin while the wind made his curly hairlocks dance and sparkling in a silver light. Ruskin didn't speak, he was just watching - as much as he loved the maliciousness of Mr. Milverton, he was a different kind of beautiful when he was not plotting an evil plan. Those times, Ruskin believed that there was a chance that his secret dream would come true and they could share a bond aside from their workplace relationship. That he can love Mr. Milverton who will love him back.

Of course, now it was just a dream. But covered by the sweet scent of the roses, Ruskin thought that it was possible.

The excited smile what appeared on Mr. Milverton's face when Ruskin baked him his favourite dessert - a strawberry cake. Mr. Milverton was so childlike when Ruskin sliced the cake up for him, so innocent like he was not the one who ruined countless lives. His golden gaze was shining from the joy and it made Ruskin's heart beat faster. He liked bringing joy to Mr. Milverton's life and causing him some carefree moments. He liked the gentle smile what Mr. Milverton flashed at him these times, the heartfelt “Thank you, Ruskin” in the soft voice. It was not only joy for Mr. Milverton, but joy for Ruskin as well.

The greatest joy of his life.

As quietly as he could, Ruskin walked to the bed and glanced down at Mr. Milverton’s face. Whatever Mr. Milverton was dreaming of, it was a good dream, because he was smiling. Ruskin couldn't help but touch his forehead, ordering the messy, curly hair. He loved Mr. Milverton from all his heart and he was the only one who saw these moments of him.

He considered them his special blessing.

Ruskin watched the sleeping Mr. Milverton and kept his hand there until he heard that the man inhaled a deep breath. He placed his hand over and waited with a heavily beating heart how his employer woke up.

The golden light sleepily shone up to Ruskin and the smile widened from the corner of his mouth. Ruskin smiled back at Mr. Milverton and greeted him.

"Good morning, Mr. Milverton."

"Good morning, Ruskin." Mr. Milverton answered and breathed in the air again. "Yoi brought me flowers, didn't you? Like you always do."

"Like I always do, sir." Ruskin repeated softly.

He lived to bring joy to Mr. Milverton.
