Work Text:
"I'm back!" Dazai announced as he barged into the agency.
"Dazai-san!" Atsushi beamed as he jumped out of his seat and ran towards the brunet.
"Atsushi-kun!" Dazai exclaimed. They quickly exchanged a kiss before hugging each other tightly. Afraid that if they let go, the other would disappear.
"Aww, I didn't know you were dating," Yosano gushed at the reunion. She always thought they would make a cute couple, but never thought anything would happen because Dazai always said he had no interest in men.
Instantly, Dazai and Atsushi jumped away from each other like they had been burned. Both their faces were bright red.
"I'm s-so s-sorry, Dazai-san," Atsushi stuttered. He couldn't believe he did something so stupid. He didn't want to think about how much Dazai was probably going to hate him now.
"Why are you apologising? I kissed you," Dazai stressed as he pulled at his hair. He couldn't believe he let his emotions take over like that. He had been dreaming about reuniting with Atsushi ever since his arrest. It was what had kept him sane while locked up, and now he had probably ruined his friendship with Atsushi.
The agency watched as they both panicked. Dazai was pacing back and forth, muttering under his breath, while Atsushi curled into a ball on the floor.
Yosano turned to Ranpo and asked, "Wait… Are they not together?" Because that was the only explanation for why the two detectives were acting the way they were.
"No," Ranpo said with a sigh.
"Oh." That was all Yosano could say. She started to feel bad because if she hadn't mentioned anything, they might not have realised they kissed.
Ranpo rolled his eyes at the two. He knew they had been oblivious, but this was taking things to another level, and he refused to watch it go on any longer because he would lose it. "Dazai, Atsushi-kun, please come over here," Ranpo said as he tried his best to keep the annoyance out of his tone.
The two detectives slowly made their way over to Ranpo, while refusing even to risk glancing at one another.
"Yes, Ranpo-san?" Atsushi kept his eyes glued to the floor. He was sure Ranpo was going to reprimand him for his inappropriate behaviour, and Atsushi would accept whatever punishment he deemed acceptable.
"I know this isn't the most ideal situation, but I have to be the one to tell you both," Ranpo said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. He didn't want to get involved in his colleague's love lives, but they gave him no choice. If he doesn't, Dazai and Atsushi would be forever awkward around each other and would never get together.
"I'm aware, Ranpo-san." Dazai clenched his fists tightly. He knew he had messed up and would do anything to make up for making Atsushi feel uncomfortable, even if that meant leaving the agency.
"You are both in love with each other," Ranpo stated bluntly.
"What?" Atsushi and Dazai both exclaimed loudly.
"I said what I said. Now sort yourselves out and don't make me have to get involved with your love lives again, or else." And with that, Ranpo left the office for an early lunch, praying when he arrived back that everything would be finally sorted.
Dazai and Atsushi both looked at each other shyly. Both searched each other's eyes to find out if what Ranpo had said was true or if he was messing with them. They didn't want to get their hopes up because the heartbreak would be unbearable.
Dazai decided to take a chance and slowly reached out his hand towards Atsushi to hopefully take. He was sure the whole office could hear how loud his heart was pounding.
A smile broke across Atsushi's face as he happily took Dazai's hand and was pulled back into a hug by the brunet.
Yosano had to bite her tongue from commenting because she didn't want to ruin the moment again. But it was really sweet watching Dazai and Atsushi interact with each other. Everyone must have agreed with her because no one said a word as they quietly went back to work. Leaving the two lovebirds be in their own world.
