Chapter 1: Birthday

Summary:

January — Scorpius celebrates his birthday with family

Chapter Text

“Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Scorpius, happy birthday to you!” He was awoken by his parents singing, his expression quickly shifted from dazed confusion to excitement as he saw the plate of raspberry muffins in his mother’s arms that she had baked for his fifth birthday. A cheerful smile was spread across Scorpius’s face, there was a lit candle placed on the muffin in the centre which gave his white-blonde hair a luminous glow, he opened his mouth and blew it out in one puff.

“I hope you didn’t forget about your special day Birthday boy! You looked a bit puzzled when you woke up.” Astoria teased, she sat next to him on the bed and gave his shoulder a light nudge.

He giggled in response, “What? No way mum!” Scorpius replied, quite unconvincingly at that.

Draco was sat at his legs and stole a muffin off on the plate which was now sat on Scorpius’s lap. “You snooze you lose, Mister!” He said with a mouthful of food.

“Good thing for you, I was going to share with you and mum anyways!” The cheery boy stated, receiving a pat on the hair from his dad.

He began chowing down on a section of the delicious muffin, as did his mother.

“Yum!” Scorpius exclaimed as he swallowed his food.

“Yum indeed! Your mum is a great baker isn’t she Scorpius?” Draco complimented.

“The best!” He confirmed.

Astoria beamed, “This is your day Sweetie, not mine! Grandpa and Gran said that we aren’t to let you open any presents before their arrival but one gift wouldn’t hurt, come on!” She told her son while heading towards the doorway.

He crawled out his bed in an instant, running excitedly towards his mother with his father trailing behind him.

They walked into the sitting room and Scorpius almost exploded when he saw the pile of presents waiting on him. Astoria handed him a box that he quickly realised was too heavy to hold, Draco caught it just as it was about to fall and held it out while Scorpius tore off the wrapping paper. His face lit up as he saw a collection of multicoloured books.

“There’s lots of different ones! There’s some about Hogwarts; where you will be one day, theres some about magical creatures and I think theres one about herbology.” Scorpius’s mother told him as he admired the books. He stood up and hugged his dad, then walked towards Astoria and shared a hug with her as well.

“Thank you!” He said gratefully after leaning back from the embrace.

His mother reached out to stroke his cheek. “You’re welcome, Sweetie.”

Scorpius’s grandparents arrived a while later in the front entrance, his gran gave him a sweet smile — his grandpa smiled as well but it didn’t feel the same as the soft one his grandmother gave, it felt colder and menacing. Scorpius imagined a shark to give the same grin before attacking its prey.

Narcissa leant down to give Scorpius a hug then Lucius reached out his arm for a handshake before handing him a small black box. Scorpius opened the box hopefully, it opened to reveal what looked like two silver buttons.

“We bought you some cufflinks to put on the sleeves of your shirt.” Lucius informed his grandson.

Scorpius offered a half smile, “Oh, thank you.” He did think that cufflinks were a bit of a boring present unlike the books he received but he was taught to always be grateful.

“Should we go open the rest of your presents?” His Grandmother asked him while wiping her shoes on the doormat.

“Yeah!” Scorpius replied before running back through to the living room, where the pile of presents sat for him.

He opened all the gifts within the next half hour — a kids broomstick, new shoes, some sweets, a children’s watch and some other valuables sat next to him on the leather couch.

Scorpius was overjoyed with his birthday gifts as he sat at the Dining table waiting for a plate of the lasagne his mother cooked. Food was set in front of him, he picked up his cutlery and began eating the delicious cooking. Suddenly his mothers face grew pale, she stood up a bit shaky — Draco stood up immediately after her, holding her arms to support her. This happened quite often yet Scorpius still felt sad, he knew there was nothing he could do to help as he watched his father lead Astoria to bed for a lie down. He noticed the glare following her from his grandfather and he felt an emotion he doesn’t feel very often — anger. Why would he look at her with such resent? Does he know how amazing she is? If he did, he wouldn’t be looking at her that way. Draco re-entered the room a moment later and sat back down at the table, a sadder expression on his face than before. He stared at the plate set on the place mat in front of him for a few minutes before he slowly picked up his fork and then he forced himself to each another portion.

The grown ups were talking and Scorpius didn’t feel like staying at the table, so he sneakily slid off of his chair and left the room. He ran in and out of the living room, retrieving one of his new books about magical creatures and then he sped further down the hall, leading to his parents bedroom. He slowly opened the door and walked over to where his mother was resting, he climbed to the spot next to her and she smiled at him. Scorpius opened the book to chapter one and started reading the page about mooncalves to her.

She stroked his hair as he read next to her, he didn’t know for how long, but if it was forever — he wouldn’t have complained. The warmth of the bedsheets, her floral perfume, and her hands in his hair made him feel sleepy. His reading must have had the same effect on Astoria because they both eventually drifted off in a deep sleep.
