Summary
In the 13th century, most nuns and mystics were illiterate despite needing to share their religious encounters, so they had confessors (friars and abbotts) who wrote down their experiences as they spoke. Sister Margery is not illiterate but she still needs Friar Seth to write down her dream. The religious words spoken is dialogue based on the book "The Flowing Light of the Godhead" by a 13th century nun named Mechtild of Magdeburg. The friar is an older man, late 50's; the nun is in her 30's.
