it's too little, way too late

Summary:

Starflight and Fatespeaker have been happily engaged for a few months now, and with their wedding rapidly approaching he's been finding that nothing could bring his days down.

"I’m sure it’s actually nothing and that I’m just over reacting but sometimes… I swear… It feels like Sunny hates me.”

Okay, that one's pretty worrying.

Chapter Text

“Six days.” Starflight whispered, to the dragon curled beside him. Fatespeaker groaned slightly and Starflight burst into giggles.

“Staarrrfligghht.” She muttered in response, turning over in their bed, slightly giggling as well. “You promised…”

It was six days till their wedding, well closer to five days and a half. When they had initially scheduled it, Starflight had developed a habit of whispering how close it was in Fatespeaker’s ear at random points throughout the day. He hadn’t done it for around a month now after she made him promise to stop.

The couple shifted towards each other after a while, Fatespeaker placing her snout into the nook of his neck.

“You’re being eerily quiet.” Starflight said, worry seeping into his voice. “Is something wrong?”

“By the moons, is it that obvious?” Starflight nodded and she sighed. “You’re going to think it’s silly…”

“I promise I won’t.” He pulled her closer in a way that he hoped was more comforting than possessive.

“It’s just…” She moved her head away from Starflight for a moment before returning. “No it’s stupid.”

“Fatespeaker,” The blind dragon started. “Anything that bothers you bothers me.”

“Okay, I just feel like I’m going crazy.” She said, moving away from Starflight and sitting up. He matched her motion and sat beside her. “And I’m sure it’s actually nothing and that I’m just over reacting but sometimes… I swear… It feels like Sunny hates me.”

There was a moment of silence between them for a moment before Starflight spoke. “Wow.”

“Just forget it, I’m fine —”

“No, Fatespeaker, I want to hear.” Starflight said, trying to place a talon over Fatespeaker’s and missing the first couple times before finally reaching her.

“Sometimes, if I’m in her line of sight, I don’t even have to be talking to her or near her, she stares at me with this withering glare.” The ebony dragon explained. “But only for a few moments before quickly looking at something else.”

“Okay…”

“And, if Moonwatcher’s near she’ll keep flicking her eyes between us.” Fatespeaker continued. “And I know that’s incredibly circumstantial, but the circumstance is that Moonwatcher is a mind reader.”

“Right…”

“Okay, what’s on your mind.” Fatespeaker sighed, pulling away from Starflight. “Because clearly you’re elsewhere right now.”

“Oh no, I’m paying attention, it's just…” The librarian popped his lips. “The connection I’ve made is much stranger than the one you made.” Starflight swore he could feel Fatespeaker’s own withering gaze. “So, sometimes during literature class, Kinkajou gets excused to spend time with me in the library where she tries to read a scroll out loud to me and I’ll correct her to the best of my ability. Recently Kinkajou has developed a specific liking of romance scrolls—”

“Nope, nope, good night Starflight, love you!” Fatespeaker deflected, flopping back onto the bed.

“I’ll try to talk to Sunny tomorrow, alright.” She opened her mouth to object, but Starflight held up a scroll to stop her. “I won’t directly ask her, or tell her about this conversation, just try and orbit the subject and get a feel for her emotions on it.”

“Thanks Starflight.” She muttered as he crawled back up next to her and the couple fell asleep.

-

“Sunny!” Starflight yelled, bursting into the counselors office with a booming voice and light following. “You are in love with my fiancé!”

“Moon.” Turtle greeted, coming beside the Nightwing. Moon’s head snapped towards Turtle, frantically trying to hide the scroll behind her. “I don’t mean to judge, but you haven’t talked or come near the rest of us,” He waved towards the rest of the Jade Winglet. “for the entirety of lunch. Instead you’ve been sitting here maniacally laughing whilst writing in the corner. I just kind of want to know what's up.”

Moon looked side to side conspiratorially before landing an intense gaze on Turtle. “Can you keep a secret, specifically from Kinkajou.”

“Probably, am I in danger?” Before Moon answered, she grabbed Turtle and pulled him beneath the table following behind him after pulling her scroll off the table. “Okay, now you’re worrying me.”

“This,” She said, shoving the text into Turtle’s talons. “is basically fanfiction.”

“That feels anti-climatic.” He took a glance over the scroll before looking back at Moon in surprise. “This is about Sunny, Starflight, and Fatespeaker.” She nodded guiltily. “Why are you writing this!?”

“So a month ago I had a vision.” She started, snatching the scroll away from the Seawing. “It was of Sunny running away from Starflight and Fatespeaker’s wedding in tears and it has taken over my mind. I literally think about it during stressful exams instead of my work, it’s infected me. I had to get it on paper before it killed me.”

“Okay, so you had a vision of a member of staff running from a wedding in tears, so you wrote.” He looked back at the scroll over Moon’s shoulder. “A scroll about real dragons we know, who play a significant role in our daily lives.” He muttered, eyes scanning down the page. “AND YOU SHIPPED SUNNY WITH FATESP—” Moon clasped a talon over Turtle’s snout.

“Too loud.” She complained, before releasing him.

“This is weird behavior.” Turtle growled underneath his breath.

“I know, I’m cursed.”

“I can’t believe you're writing yuri about members of staff.” He groaned “Why even those two?”

“Because I can’t read Sunny’s thoughts about Fatespeaker or Starflight.” She explained. “I know Starflight and Fatespeaker are in love, I can see it, but I can’t tell anything about her feelings for Fatespeaker from her mind, it’s like trying to dig up a well buried secret without a shovel.”

“Well wouldn’t the same be possible for Starflight and Sunny then?”

“Everyone knows that — actually I guess you wouldn’t know.” She curled the scroll up and placed it on the ground. “A couple years back Starflight confessed to Sunny and got rejected, hard. Like ‘you’re a brother to me.’ levels of rejection. It happened in front of the whole Rainwing army too, I just assumed everyone knew.”

“Wow.”

“You want to know the worst part?” Turtle nodded hesitantly. “Fatespeaker thinks Sunny hates her.”

“Wow.” He said again with more intensity.

Moon’s head suddenly snapped up and hit the table. “They're here.” She slipped out from under the table, with Turtle trailing not far behind. She guided his gaze towards Sunny on one side of the lunch room, then to the other side with Fatespeaker and Starflight. She held up three talons and slowly lowered them one by one as Sunny’s gaze eventually drifted towards the Nightwings. “And now I can’t hear her thoughts.” Sunny was staring, very intently. Eventually Fatespeaker’s gaze also drifted and met Sunny’s, before the Sandwing suddenly turned away. “And now Fatespeaker is worried about what Sunny thinks. She will proceed to tell no one — oh?” Fatespeaker and Starflight began making their way over to Sunny. “That’s a first.”
