Work Text:
When Hinata awoke, he could hear voices talking, but he could hardly make out what they were saying as he was more focused on the fingers that were currently combing through his hair. It felt so nice that he couldn't stop himself from leaning into it.
"Shouyou?"
The voice sounded somewhat familiar, but Hinata couldn't place it.
"Shou, are ya with me?" The voice pleaded.
Hinata opened his eyes and was confused to see a man who looked like an older version of Miya Atsumu looking down at him with concern.
"How are ya feelin'?" The Atsumu lookalike asked as he helped Hinata sit up.
Hinata stared at him for a moment, confused. He even sounded like Atsumu, but how could it be him? The man in front of him looked to be in his thirties. He glanced around the room, and his eyes widened when he saw Osamu leaning against the wall. Who, in turn, smiled and waved at him. It had to be the Miya twins. Hinata was certain of it, but why were they in Brazil and looking like they had aged more than a decade?
"Shouyou?"
Hinata knew he should say something, but he was completely overwhelmed by what was going on. It was then that he noticed the ring on his left hand. He looked up at Atsumu and instantly blushed. There was no possible way, right? He sneakily glanced at Atsumu's hand, and his heart nearly stopped when he saw the identical ring on his finger. "We're m-married," he stuttered.
A look of realisation flashed across Atsumu's face. "We are," he replied.
"So, it was a marriage proposal!" Hinata practically shrieked.
"Huh?"
"The whole I'm going to set for you one day. Tanaka-san said it was, but I thought he was messing with me." Hinata explained in a rush. He could feel his face heating up even more from remembering how much his teammates used to tease him over it. It hadn't helped that he had developed a massive crush on the Inarizaki setter.
Osamu couldn't contain his laughter. "I told ya, Tsumu." He knew he should've felt bad that Hinata had amnesia, but that was honestly the best thing he had heard in years. He had teased Atsumu countless times about how his promise to Hinata sounded like a marriage proposal. He was never going to let his twin ever live this down.
Atsumu turned to glare at his twin, his cheeks flushed from embarrassment. "Can't ya be helpful for once, Samu, and go get the nurse?"
Osamu, who could hardly breathe from laughing so much, just nodded and left the room.
Hinata rested his hand over his heart in the hope it would help to calm it down. His head was spinning from the realisation that he was married to Miya Atsumu. Hinata tried to subtly glance over at the blond, but it caused him to blush even more. He always thought Atsumu was handsome, but how was it possible for him to get even more handsome?
"Are ya feelin' okay? Ya had hit yer head pretty hard." Atsumu asked.
"M-my head is a little d-dizzy, but other than that I feel okay," stuttered Hinata. He wanted nothing more than to hide because he couldn't seem to act normally around Atsumu.
Atsumu sighed in relief. "That's good."
There was so much Hinata wanted to ask Atsumu, but he didn't even know where to begin. When did they get married? How did they get together? How did he end up in the hospital?
"How old do ya think ya are, Shouyou?" Atsumu asked, breaking the silence.
"Twenty."
"Ah, ya were still in Brazil then," Atsumu noted. "Ya actually turned thirty-five last month."
"Thirty-five?" Hinata exclaimed. He shouldn't have been so shocked to hear that, since Atsumu did look like he was in his thirties, but it was a lot to take in. He needed to look at himself in the mirror. How much had he changed? Hinata pulled at his hair, and it seemed to be longer. Then a realisation hit him. "Do I still play volleyball?"
Atsumu chuckled at Hinata's question. Of course, his first question would be about volleyball. "We both retired last season. We achieved what we wanted to do, and it had felt like the right time," Atsumu explained with not a hint of regret in his voice.
"I was able to go pro?"Hinata mumbled in disbelief. There had always been a small part of him that thought maybe he had made a mistake going to Brazil. That he would fall so far behind everyone else that no matter what he'd do, he wouldn't be able to catch up.
Atsumu smiled and held himself back from ruffling Hinata's hair. "Of course. Trainin' on the beach made ya a more of a monster on the court." He still remembered the excitement he felt when he saw Hinata walk into the try-outs all those years ago. It hadn't even crossed his mind that Hinata wouldn't make the team.
Hinata couldn't keep the smile off his face even if he tried. The disappointment of no longer playing professionally didn't even cross his mind. He achieved his dream and that's all that mattered. Hinata then blushed when he thought of the words Atsumu uttered when they were teenagers. "D-did you e-ever set for…" He hid his face in his hands from embarrassment. And would it be too much to ask Atsumu to set for him when he gets out of the hospital?
Atsumu coughed awkwardly, "I did." A hint of blush spread across his cheeks. "We were on the same team for a few years, the Black Jackals, before ya moved back to Brazil to join Asas São Paulo."
"Seriously?" Hinata couldn't believe he had been able to improve himself to the point where he could join Asas São Paulo, because the Super League was on a whole other level. He had been able to attend one of their matches before, and he had been in awe of how they played.
"I don't think there would have been any team that wouldn't have wanted ya, Shouyou." And Atsumu wasn't being biased.
"What about you, Atsumu-san?" Hinata asked.
Atsumu shook his head."Black Jackals was the team for me." He had received offers to go abroad, but it hadn't felt right to play for another team.
"What about our relationship?" Hinata asked, shyly. If he were in Brazil and Atsumu were in Japan, how did they make things work?
"Been together for over ten years now," Atsumu explained fondly. "Been the best years of my life, even though we were apart for a lot of it." He reached out and squeezed Hinata's hand gently. "There were times when it was hard, but we made long-distance work. Not that we need to worry about that again."
"But what if I don't remember?" Hinata couldn't imagine what they've been through, and that was a lot of memories to lose.
"Ya don't need to worry, Shouyou. Tsumu has been pinning for ya since yer first match at nationals," Osamu teased.
"Samu." Atsumu threatened.
Hinata laughed as he continued to watch the twins argue until they were scolded by the nurse. He really hoped he remembered because what little he knew about his current life already seemed like a dream come true.
