Work Text:

Nene doesn't usually play life sim games, but this game caught her interest.

Tomodachi Life. The infamous 3DS game that finally got a switch port after years. Where you make your family, friends, or even fictional characters and watch them all interact in silly ways.

Once the game arrived in the mail, (she orders online, not in person) she grabbed her switch that is currently charging and booted it up.

——

"Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream… on Pomelo Island…"

Her mii, very out of character for Nene, yelled.

She created her mii as accurate as possible. Even if there were bangs that fit her hair, she believed it didn't do her justice.

Before buying, she read a guide on how to make eyes a specific style she was liking when she saw demo screenshots, and while Emu taught her how to draw, did watch a guide on how to do facepaint for hair.

And thus, the Nene mii was born. On Pomelo Island. Don't judge the name, she was bad at names.

After a few minutes of playing, she was prompted to make another mii. She decided to make her troupe first.

——

She was soon done with her troupe, Tsukasa, Emu, and Rui she hoped she did justice to.

Now, she was prompted to make a fifth resident to progress. …Decisions, decisions…

…I could make Hoshino-san? But how do you draw her hair? Hanasato-san? But her hair is pretty weird too… heck, maybe even Yoisaki-san. She is probably the most simplest to make… or maybe even Aoyagi—

Aoyagi-kun.

Her gaming friend, former classmate, and now library committee member alongside her.

Don't get her wrong— he is a really nice guy who's passionate about the things he enjoys and… Tsukasa, for some reason. Also include Akito who's in her class this year alongside An. Mention one of the two and he'll keep talking on how they're both the greatest people ever.

…She… caught feelings for him during the gaming tournament. Increased a bit more from the times she accidentally kept staring at him in class, and a lot more when she joined the library committee. And now, she's trying to act normal with the arcade outings they're frequently going to.

Alas, she pulled up a picture of him from her phone and begun making him.

——

It’s been a few days. She has added a lot of her friends once she got the hang of face paint. Pomelo Island has changed. Nene was currently watching mii Saki getting confessed to mii Haruka and the former accepting.

And after she was done, she saw a pink thought bubble from her own mii.

"I can't keep these feelings anymore! I've got to confess to Aoyagi-kun!"

Oh.

Oh.

So earlier, mii Nene asked that mii Toya was on her mind a lot and was given the option to say that it was love. Out of flustered panic, she picked that it must be love. Now mii Nene was crushing on mii Toya. Just like her real life counterpart.

It would be silly to say not to confess, she told herself. Usually she would just click through, but why is she dressing up her mii and giving her a place to confess? Damn she was smitten…

….

Mii Toya accepted. And nobody interrupted. Why was Nene so red? Why is her face buried in her pillow and her fist punching her sheets? And over pixels? She would be caught dead if someone found out.

Whatever, not like someone's gonna see her save…

——

That thought went completely out of her head when she brung her switch to school.

Emu wasn't planned to break in to her school today… hopefully. So she has time to be alone in the library and play.

…If she wasn't sleepy, that is. This game is too addicting for god's sake.

Maybe a nap can help… it's lunch break after all… she thought before her eyelids grew heavy.

"…"

——

Toya had some unfinished business in the library. His lunch can wait.

It was oddly quiet. Nobody wasn't really here, too.

Is that… snoring?

Toya went to investigate on the source of noise.

——

"Ah… Kusanagi…" Toya softly muttered to herself.

Nene's back was propped behind a bookshelf. Head lolling to the side. A really uncomfortable sleeping position, if he said so himself.

Toya noticed her switch on the ground next to her. It was off. Probably in sleep mode, knowing her.

First order of business is to get her more comfortable… but he believes it would be breaching her boundaries if he carries her to nap comfortably…

He decided to sit down next to her and let her head rest on his shoulder. …Good thing she wasn't awake to see how red his ears were.

His attention diverted to the switch. What was she playing on it…? Curiosity got the best of him.

"Ah…" He said out loud. Kohane told him about Tomodachi life before. The game did pique his interest a bit. He opened the game and decided to play it for himself. Obviously he wont make any new miis or do anything that'll make the sleeping girl on his shoulder enrage.

Toya played for a bit, he waved to some of the miis of familiar faces waving at him, fed some of them with things he liked, and was about to go play around with his own lookalike. But he didn't expect to see that he and mii Nene were sweethearts for one day on the information card. Doesn't help that mii Toya has a pink thought bubble from his head.

"I want to propose to Kusanagi. Do you think that's a good idea?"

Toya froze. His cheeks turned slightly red.

Unperfect timing… Nene was waking up.

"Uggh… Aoyagi-kun…?"

"Oh…"

"!!!" Nene jolted.

Well, that was awkward. Nene was red all over and Toya looked like he was caught stealing some cookies. Equally as red, albeit a little lighter shade of red.

"…Sorry, Kusanagi. Curiosity got the best of me. And you were napping in such an uncomfortable position I…"

"N-No! It's fine, Aoyagi-kun…" It wasn't. Just that Toya looked like a sad puppy to reassure.

The two were silent for a long time. The only thing breaking the silence is the love music coming from her switch.

"…I like you too. Romantically. If that what it is." Toya broke the silence and bluntly said.

Nene froze.

"Ah—! If that's not what it is then I—"

"N-No! I like you too!!" Nene blurted with a red face

Toya froze. If there was more for him to freeze on, before relaxing.

"I see… that's… good. So does that mean…?"

"Uh… I think so?"

This was all going so fast for poor Nene. Obviously confessions in real life don't end like romance novels, especially with how awkward the two were. So why is she happy? That Toya returned her feelings this whole time?

Toya cleared his throat. "Well…" he said, turning to the switch's screen. "Should I click yes?"

"Uh… sure."

Toya clicked yes and now the screen was directed to mii Nene in Toya's room. Toya was clearing the game in button precision. Really fast for Nene to keep up. Soon the minigame was cleared, with mii Toya proposing to mii Nene. Toya obviously took screenshots while smiling like an idiot. Nene was too. The wedding cutscene was really cute for them, too and the virtual honeymoon to Hawaii.

"Oh… we have to name the household…" Nene spoke up after their mii counterparts started to live together.

Toya reached for her hand on the ground.

"…May I?"

Nene, flustered, nodded.

Toya squeezed her hand. Perfect fit and gave a name suggestion.

"'Cotton Candy Stall'."

Notes:

the ending is pretty rushed sob

(yes i did name the nenetoya household cotton candy stall in my playthrough)
