Work Text:
“Where are you going!?”
“Out! Far away from here.”
“Fine! Like I care…” He crossed his arms and looked away.
And with that, he left their apartment, leaving Izuku alone and hurt. It was another one of their petty fights again. He had no idea how it even erupted this bad. Just minutes ago they were eating dinner made by Bakugo. Izuku looked at half eaten food on the table and sighed, he didn’t have an appetite anymore. Instead, he cleaned up and put the food away in the fridge. He didn’t want Bakugo’s cooking to go to waste. He turned around and just stood there in the awfully quiet house. It was usually calm, but the ambient background noise would fill in the emptiness. Even that wasn’t there to help him. He walked over to the living room, plopping down on the couch.
He leaned his head backwards and closed his eyes, wondering where it went wrong. Was it his fault for starting it? All he said was how Bakugo barely hung out with him. Always out on patrol or returning back home late. It’s not like it was entirely Bakugo’s fault though, it’s just how his schedule was formed. And Izuku? He wasn’t the one to talk to either. He was occupied and busy at UA. Always preparing the best for his students and making sure they succeed. Sometimes, Bakugo had to forcefully drag him out of that building to bring him home. Despite that, Izuku would just stay up late and continue his work until midnight. He would then suddenly remember his lover was in bed— waiting for hours for him.
“....I really suck. Why did I even bring that up?” He rubbed his face and took a deep breath in.
He got up and looked outside, it was pitch black. Minutes passed since Bakugo left the house in rage. He must not have gone that far, right? The green haired boy got up, and left the house right away. He was sure Bakugo would be alright, but he still wanted to apologize rightfully. There was a park nearby, maybe he went there? Izuku walked with urgency towards the park and looked around carefully.
It was so dark, the city lights barely helped him out. He didn’t dare to yell Bakugo’s name though, it’s not like he was actually missing. If Bakugo did encounter a villain, Izuku knew that Bakugo would not hesitate to attack and undoubtedly win. He just wanted to make sure he was okay for his own sake. The guilty one walked around for a couple of minutes. He was sure to have walked everywhere, but no trace of the other. He was starting to get anxious.
“Maybe he went somewhere other than the park?” Izuku put his hands on his hips and looked around one last time.
Just then, he felt a drop of water on the bridge of his nose. He wiped it off and went back home— but didn’t enter. He kept walking, trying out the opposite direction. Maybe there was some luck on that side of the neighbourhood. The more he came towards the main market, the more his patience was being tested. How come he couldn’t locate one person when the streets were empty? And he calls himself a hero? He can’t even find the most important person in his life. Defeated, he didn’t know where else to look. Did he get into a taxi and go somewhere far away?
Did he really mean what he said before leaving? Forget the guilt and anxiety, Izuku was just sad. Sad and yearning for his lover again. No, Bakugo wouldn’t just leave one random night. He was reasonable and logical when needed. He will turn up… eventually. Izuku just didn’t know when that would occur. He kept circling around the same roads, hoping to see a familiar blond haired individual, but no luck at all. He was now meters away from their home.
Just then, another drop fell. This time on his cheek. He wiped it off, thinking nothing of it until more followed it. From nothing, it was suddenly pouring like never before. This was truly Izuku’s worst night. He didn’t even bring a jacket nor sweater when he left the house. He was just in a shirt and gym shorts. The nightly heat with rain was not a good mix. Regardless, he persevered through the rain and did one last check of the area. Running back to the park, drenched, just wishing to see his favorite person again. Once there, nothing. The constant raindrops only blurred his vision.
He was breathing hard, exhausted from running back and forth through the city. He was already wet from head to top, what was the point of running now? He turned around and walked home, vanquished. The last remaining hope in him was hoping for his dear Kacchan to be at home, sitting on the couch with open arms. He could care less if he was still vividly angry at him for starting the argument. He wanted to be back in those big and warm arms again. To cuddle in bed as they both drifted to sleep. He would beg for forgiveness if he had to! Anything to have him back.
He returned home, bursting through the door and….! Nothing. Not a single soul was present except for the AllMight plushie on their couch. Izuku was going to cry— or laugh? He didn’t know what to feel. It was comical for him to think Bakugo would come back after a night like this. He took off his soggy shoes and undressed immediately. It was his house afterall, who would challenge him for being naked in his own home. He waddled towards their bedroom and picked some new clothes before hopping in the shower. He was hoping that he hadn’t gotten sick.
Once out of the shower, he tip-toed around. Maybe Bakugo was back? Nevermind, he was still alone. He didn’t even have the energy to dry his hair at this point. He lazily laid on the couch and leaned his head backwards, eyeing the front door upside down. Feeling the blood rush to his eyes and brain, he lifted his head and laid sideways. He took the AllMight plushie in his arms and pondered. Now what? It was up to time to tell what was going to happen. Izuku closed his eyes and tried to stop his worries.
—
He slammed the door behind him, walking away as fast as he could. Even though he was full of rage, he couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty. The last thing he saw was Izuku with his arms crossed and his face turned away. Bakugo knew him too well, he could tell Izuku was hurt.
“Fuck.” He cursed out loud in a low tone.
He couldn’t just turn around now, he would look like a fool after just leaving seconds ago. Where was he even going to go? He didn’t grab his car keys so he wasn't going to drive himself away. A taxi? Bakugo tossed that idea away right away. That was childish and too far of an action. He kept walking towards the main city while trying to regroup everything that just happened. It wasn’t like what Izuku said was wrong. Whenever he came late and saw Izuku eating some trash— cheap takeout, he felt his heart wince. He wasn’t mad at Izuku— he was mad at himself. He promised to treat him well, with care. The packed hero schedule he was given didn’t help the situation either. He swears someone was intentionally fucking him over at the agency.
Today, after a few weeks of utter bullshit, Dynamight— Bakugo Katsuki had enough. He wrapped up his day early and rushed back home with ingredients in his hands. He was determined to cook for Izuku, a home cooked meal, after weeks of promising it. He opened the front door and pure silence.
As expected, Izuku–Sensei was still at UA.
“That workaholic nerd.” He exhaled and put the groceries bags on the kitchen counter.
If anything, the nerd not being here was good. It worked out for Bakugo and his “surprise” for Izuku. He cooked in peace before hearing the front door open. A tired and loud teacher had come home. Bakugo didn’t say anything though, there wasn’t a point to. He kept stirring the pot and looked at his phone.
Izuku stumbled forward, making his way to the living room before flinching at Bakugo’s figure.
“Yo-you’re here???” His soul was almost taken away with how scared he got.
Izuku did not expect Bakugo to be home this early. Usually Izuku would get home in complete silence. The only noise he would hear was the music blasting in his ears.
“Where else would I be? Go take a shower! I can fucking smell you from there.” If Izuku was any closer, Bakugo might've hit him with the wooden spoon in his hand.
Izuku quickly collected his belongings and rushed away. He was ecstatic that, for once, Bakugo was home before him. He took a shower and almost ran towards the kitchen. He knew better than to disturb Bakugo when cooking. He was just eyeing the food, drooling at the scent being produced. Soon, dinner was served. They both started to eat with passion. Even though he always cooked at home, Bakugo was so busy that he hadn’t touched the kitchen for days. It really irked him. He liked cooking and he couldn’t even do that in peace without being constantly reminded of work. As long as he had his stupid green nerd beside him, he was okay—
“Kacchan… could you try clearing your schedule a bit?”
“Hhm?” Bakugo looked up at the nervous idiot in front of him.
“Ah! No— Just a day is fine actually! Maybe this Friday? Or would another day work for you? Any day really is fine to me!” He immediately fumbled under the other’s glare.
“I can’t. I’m packed.”
Izuku fell silent hearing this, what did he expect? Bakugo didn’t think about it. He couldn’t do jackshit about his work hours even if he wanted to. Seeing Izuku stay silent didn’t bother him, he kept eating.
“I thought so. What did I expect…” The sulking boy muttered under his breath.
The grip on Bakugo’s spoon tightened. The blond haired boy looked up and saw Izuku’s pouting expression. His grip softened as he calmed down. It wasn’t worth his time to start an argument.
“I mean, is taking ONE day off that hard to do? It’s just one day…!” Izuku couldn't hold it in anymore. He was happy that Bakugo came early, but that didn’t dismiss the fact that he came home late every. single. day. Izuku knew that it wasn’t his fault, it never was in the beginning, but could he really not take a single day off? It seemed unreasonable.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what? All I’m asking is one day off where we can spend time together. That’s all!”
“You know that’s not possi—”
“Then do something about it! Or do you not want to spend time with me anymore huh?” Izuku was not eating. His utensils were on the table, unmoved.
Izuku obviously knew how hero work was. He covered some shifts here and there when his teacher schedule was flexible enough to do so. He was just tired and gloomy that the only times he saw Bakugo was early in the morning, late at night or occasionally throughout the day. Even at that, those moments would be cut short. Every time Bakugo would rush away from their short meet ups, there was a lingering sadness that Izuku felt. He wanted to spend more time with him, but being a hero himself, Izuku knew what mattered more. Every single time, he would watch Bakugo blast off from the balcony, going into the distance where the commotion was. At times, Izuku would feel guilty about feeling this way. Their schedules didn’t really align and their days off would also be random.
“Don’t start yelling at me when you can barely handle yours!” Bakugo slammed his fist down, putting his cutlery down.
“I handle mine just fine!”
After that, both of them went back and forth. And now, Bakugo was stranded on the lonely streets. He thought of going to the park but the house was still visible from there. He wanted to go somewhere minutes away. He started walking more into the city, taking in the various late night attractions despite no one being out. It was just him and random cars passing by. The area they lived in was predominantly occupied by families, so there weren’t any bars or clubs of that sort— not that Bakugo would even frequent them anyways. He wasn’t looking to drink either, none of it seemed worth it after a fight like that.
He walked alongside the sidewalk and passed by a billboard promoting his new collaboration with some random brand. He stared at it and felt weird about it. It made him look like some strong hero. He definitely was strong and powerful, but Dynamight felt weak at that moment. The whole fight, both were hurt but still defended themselves when faced against criticism. Izuku was clearly holding back for some time and finally let out his pent up frustration. Bakugo was tired from work and the exhaustion made him more honest than usual. Thankfully, none of them yelled out insults, that would’ve made one of them cry for sure. Bakugo walked when he remembered there was a small beach just a few meters from where he was. He dragged his drained body towards the location and when there, he settled on the cool sand.
“This fucking sucks.” He felt like shit.
Here he was all alone when he had a perfect lover back home he could be with. He watched the low tides crash with each other, the uneven waves were struggling to mix. Colliding with pressure and falling down due to gravity. Oddly enough when they merged, the rhythm was there. A peaceful harmony was displayed. He smiled at the calm scene, but it quickly dropped when he realized what he was doing. He was in his 20s and was wave watching like some old folk. He laid his head on his knees and sighed, what the hell was he doing? All Izuku wanted was one day— and he couldn’t even give him that.
The thought of apologizing though didn’t cross his mind. He wasn’t the best at expressing his emotions, so the idea of simply apologizing was very slim. Even saying “I love you” to the nerd was hard— and Izuku knew that. That’s why he never forced Bakugo to say those things. The way Bakugo showed his feelings was by actions. Gifts, cooking, spending time with him or even just talking with his annoying lover for hours was his way of showing affection. He would partially be embarrassed about it, but seeing Izuku’s reaction each time— it was worth the humiliation.
Thinking back to old memories, he felt bitter. He should really go back now. He deliberately left the house and now was the idiot in love. Bakugo missed his Izuku. He got up, dusting the sand off his ass when he felt a rain drop. He looked up and felt another one.
“Fuck me…” He whispered, triggered.
He quickly gathered himself and started going back home. On the way back, he decided to stop at 7/11. It felt wrong to go back home empty handed. It wasn’t the best place to get gifts, but it did the job. He picked up some flowers and idled around the store, wondering if he should just buy the whole store or be wise. In the end, he left with a bouquet in one hand and a bunch of snacks, in a bag, in the other hand. He double checked his stuff when he heard thunder. Even a pro hero gets scared sometimes. He jumped and looked outside confused. The next thing he knew, it was pouring like no other.
“Fuck me.” He was now trapped in a convenient store only a few meters away from home. He could easily buy an umbrella, but he already spent so much. There was no harm in staying inside until it passed either. So he stood there, waiting for the unpredicted weather to clear up. Just then, he felt his phone buzz. A notification. His heart started to race— was it who he thought it was? He urgently pulled his phone out with a smile and…! It was just his calendar reminding him of tomorrow’s work plan. His smile has never dropped that fast before. He groaned and was this close to crushing his phone on the ground. Maybe he did need a well deserved break afterall. This city makes him work like a dog with no empathy for his health or family. He was a pro hero damn it! He can do whatever he wants.
He doesn’t need the city— they need him.
He made up his mind right then and there. He will ask for a whole week off. With summer break just around the corner, it would align with Izuku’s break as well. Should he book a vacation too while he’s at it? No— he should get Izuku’s opinion first. He immediately texted his manager and let them know. If his manager refused, Bakugo would not go down without a fight. No one was allowed to boss him around except for four people. His parents, his mother-in-law and Izuku Midoriya.
“When is this annoying ass rain going to stop? I’m in a hurry, mother nature.” The eager one tapped his foot with impatience as he stared outside.
—
Izuku woke up in a cold— yet warm sweat. He was drenched, but not by the rain this time. He felt really warm— too warm. He struggled getting up and winced at the bright lights. It was burning his corneas. His throat felt dry while his eyes felt like they were on fire. His nose? Mucus was drooling down. All these symptoms couldn’t be a coincidence, especially lined up like this. Was he sick? In such a short amount of time, he had gotten sick? Izuku couldn’t believe it. He lifted his head up and was met with a headache. Feeling weak, he laid back down on the soft couch, but the heat was too much. He needed something cool. A cold shower was all that he dreamed of right now, but he knew how bad that would be. His body would go into shock feeling something that cold. He grabbed his phone and looked at the time. It was pretty darn late, but it seemed like the rain finally stopped.
Wait— Was Bakugo back home yet?!
He shot up, not caring about the sudden shift in his blood pressure, and started looking around. The lightheaded effect quickly came. He wobbled around the house, and no sign of him anywhere. Was Bakugo really gone? After everything they’ve been through, this would be the fight that breaks them up? Izuku laughed, holding back his tears. The fever did wonders on his mind, making the delusions hit even harder. Delusion was reality for him now, believing the voices in his head rather than the rational side. He slid down the cold wall. It felt so good, and so did the floor. The perfect coldness for his situation. His boiling hot feet left sweat marks on the floor by how hot they were.
Eventually, Izuku was starting to drift in and out of sleep. The only thing stopping him were his thoughts. They were all consumed by one person, Bakugo Katuski. Surely he will come back home soon. Any second now, right? He got up and stumbled his way to the kitchen. He grabbed a cold water bottle from the fridge, about to drink it when he heard a door open. Familiar steps and a scent he was praying for. He put the water down in a hurry and rushed to the entrance only centimeters away.
There he was.
They made eye contact, but Bakugo looked away first and quickly hid the stuff he bought behind him. He didn’t expect Izuku to be still awake, nonetheless at the front door. Izuku stood there, frozen. Was he imagining things due to his sickness or was Kacchan really there? Izuku took a step forward, hesitating, but his eyes never left the blond one. The tears in his eyes were still fresh.
“I’m home…” Bakugo awkwardly greeted him.
With that, Izuku threw himself at Bakugo. Running up to him and crashing into the arms he so dearly adored. Bakugo stumbled a few steps back from the sudden hug. He didn’t know what to do. He looked down and stared at the top of Izuku’s head. At the same time, Izuku looked up. His eyes were glossy, trying not to cry. Despite that, tiny drops managed to escape from the corners of his eyes. His nose was scrunched up, lifting his freckled cheeks up. His lips were quivering, frowning at the sight of seeing his lover again after a few long hours. The tightness in his arms increased. He did not want to let go of Kacchan any time soon.
“Well… Welcome home Kacchan.” Izuku buried his face into Bakugo’s collarbone.
Bakugo dropped everything, except for the flowers, and hugged the green one back. He hugged him so tightly, scared of losing him. Scared he won’t be able to see him tomorrow. As much as Izuku wanted him— Bakugo wanted him equally, maybe even more. His greed was immeasurable when it came to Izuku. No scale could determine his love for his nerd. Feeling the warmth back, Izuku finally let the ball stuck in his throat free, letting the hot tears out. It felt quite good for him, it was like the heat from his body was being let out. Bakugo rested his forehead on Izuku's neck when he felt the intense heat from him. This wasn’t a normal body temperature at all. Izuku was generally a warm person, but this was unusually warm.
Bakugo pulled back first and placed a hand on the other’s forehead— it was burning.
“Did you catch a fever!?” Bakugo took off his shoes and brought him to the couch, making Izuku sit down by force. “How did you even manage to catch a fever in such a short amount of time? You were fine a couple of hours ago.” He groaned and instantly went to change to assist Izuku better.
While he was gone, Izuku spotted the bouquet next to him and picked it up. He observed and sniffed it. It smelled wonderful, sweet but fresh. He touched the delicate soft petal, scared he would accidentally rip it off. He was done crying, but seeing the flowers in such beautiful arrangements was making him tear up again. Knowing that Bakugo bought them too, pushed him to the edge. There he was, sitting on the couch while silently sniffling away. He was a bit too happy and regretted ever causing the argument. He was the one in the wrong yet Bakugo went ahead and bought flowers. Bakugo returned and saw the mess Izuku was in.
He didn’t know how to approach the conversation. He bought the flowers out of impulse knowing it would make him happy. He didn’t think he'd be crying over it though. He walked over and tried taking the flowers away, but Izuku’s strength didn’t allow it. Bakugo sighed and laid him down on his lap. He applied a cold towel on his forehead and rubbed some ointment on his neck and temples. Izuku was in utter bliss, it felt so good to finally feel some relaxation. The heat and itchy throat was slowly getting to him. Thankfully Bakugo was there to take care of him or else, Izuku would probably remain sick for another week. That didn’t stop Bakugo from yelling though. He yelled and nagged at Izuku. Scolding him for his recklessness at such an hour.
“I was worried, I… I wanted to see and bring you home, Kacchan.” Izuku avoided his glaze. He shut his eyelids and waited. He expected a harsh stare and another scolding, but was instead met with something else— something new.
“I’m… s-sorry.” Bakugo muttered so weakly. He was too embarrassed to say it with his chest.
Izuku’s eyes shot wide open. His ears might be partially blocked, but he wasn’t deaf. He shot up and turned around to meet Bakugo’s face. It only lasted a few seconds before he was forced back down by Bakugo. Forget the tears, Izuku was head over heels right now.
“Say it again!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Liar! You just apologized Kacchan!”
Bakugo was going to suffocate him with the towel. He should’ve just let the moment pass. Why on earth did he apologize out of nowhere? This was so embarrassing, it fluttered him.
“I’m free during summer.” He changed the subject.
“Huh, how? Every hero is especially busy during summer.”
“I took the week off. The same week as your break.”
Izuku’s eyes widened. “What?!” He got up again just to be pushed down again.
“Stay down would ya! What the hell is wrong with you??” Bakugo placed his hands firmly on Izuku’s shoulders. “Making yourself dizzy…” He thought, feeling bad.
Thank God it wasn’t the omegaverse, or else Izuku would be emitting happy pheromones and scenting the whole room with joy. Bakugo could feel Izuku’s heartbeat increase as he massaged his throat and thyroid gland. He smiled and calmly explained. It was very brief and direct to the point. He was not about to embarrass himself again by saying some dumb emotional shit again.
“I need to start preparing then!” Izuku was about to ramble on, but Bakugo stopped him right then.
“Shut up. I’ll take care of that. Now let's get your ass to bed!” In one swoop, he picked Izuku up bridal style and walked over to the bedroom.
Izuku couldn’t fight back even if he wanted to. Usually when he fell sick, he would generally be okay. Still functional outside of home and working per usual. As soon as he came home and touched the cool wooden floor, he would become sluggish and collapse on their bed. He would still be active, but if Kacchan was present, he would not move a muscle. Whether Bakugo was aware of how the nerd was taking advantage of him or not, he always helped Izuku out. Still scolding him during the process of helping him recover. Perhaps this was passed down from Mitsuki when Bakugo would fall sick when he was younger.
Bakugo laid him down on the bed, making sure he was comfortable. He was about to leave when a warm hand held his hand.
“You’re leaving…?” Izuku’s tone had a hint of melancholy in it. He was getting flashbacks from a few hours ago.
Bakugo immediately reassured him and said he was going to tidy the place up a bit before sleeping. Izuku, hesitant, let go and watched Kacchan leave the room, leaving the door open to let the air circulate. Once back in the living room, Bakugo walked over to the front door and picked up the snacks he bought, placing them on the shelves in the pantry. He then grabbed the bouquet, cleaning them up before putting them in a vase with water. He put the medicine away and did his night routine. When he entered the bedroom again, Izuku was already fast asleep. Bakugo managed to get in bed without waking him up. He scrolled on his phone for a bit before taking Izuku in his arms. He cuddled against his mildly warm body, trying to transfer some of his heat onto him to help Izuku sleep better.
Guilt was an understatement to what he was feeling. He was furious at himself for causing Izuku’s fever. He pulled back a bit and snuggled his nose into the green hair. It seems like he used Bakugo’s shampoo when he showered earlier. It pissed Bakugo off a bit since he wanted to smell the nerd’s scent, not his. Regardless, it made him fuzzy inside. Knowing that Izuku willingly used his products, it made him want to protect him more. He wanted to protect his precious lover. A little bit of possessiveness also surfaced. His hand ruffled Izuku’s hair, massaging his head again to relieve the stress on it. Bakugo couldn’t sleep though. He was too busy feeling guilty about his actions and the consequence it has brought. It was flowing in his bloodstream, itching at his skin. He had no idea how, and why Izuku still loved him after all these years when all he does it screw and fuck everything up.
Just then, the head he’s been resting on moved. He pulled away, giving Izuku space to move. Their eyes met each other. One pair was drowning in shame while the other one was sleepy, barely opening to look around. Seeing Bakugo’s perplexed expression, Izuku pulled his head into his chest and caressed Bakugo’s head. He didn’t say anything, there wasn’t a need to. He saw and acted upon it instantly. Izuku Midoriya didn’t need to question Kacchan, he just knew. How could he not know? Katsuki Bakugo, his Kacchan, the person he chased and fell in love with. His first and last crush and love on earth, of course he would know if Kacchan was feeling down. Bakugo rarely showed it, hiding his emotions in fear of being seen as weak. Thankfully, Izuku was very observant. He didn’t write all those pages about Bakugo for nothing now. He continued caressing Bakugo’s head while Bakugo hugged Izuku’s body tighter than before.
All those muscles, all that strength, all that intelligence, his power, arrogance and rage— everything fell apart like dominos when it came to this nerd. The weak feeling tore him up within, but he could live with it. He can withstand it all as long as he has him. Being a pro hero was good and all, but if Izuku Midoriya wasn’t there with him to celebrate his wins, his accomplishments— did it really matter? It didn’t. It wouldn’t. Because to Bakugo, Izuku was his only trophy. His sole reward and victory. The only emerald jewel he hunts for in a cave full of diamonds. His prized possession— his weakness.
After a long night, Dynamight fell asleep in the arms of his hero. Hearing the soft snores, Izuku smiled and kissed the top of his head. Nobody criticises Bakugo more than himself. Seeing Kacchan beat himself up over small things like this made him bitter. If only Bakugo saw himself in Izuku’s eyes. There would be nothing, but admiration and adoration in his view.
Breaking up? Them? Yeah right. They still had a bunch of love for each other that no amount of time can drain. It was endless. Each morning, each night, each day passing by, grows their passion for the other even more than the day before. Even the universe couldn’t pull them apart. Like a planet needs it’s moon to stabilise them. Their attraction was astronomical. Needing the other to function properly and in peace. Without the other, they would collapse, bringing instability in the homeostasis.
Till death do them part— no. Not even that would separate them. In every universe, world or timeline that exists out there, they would find each other. It may take long, but their dedication would never let them suffer alone.
In everyone’s eyes, they were their heroes.
But to them, they were each other’s heroes.
Chasing each other with nothing but fondness and pride.
