Summary
It was meant to be pretend. That was the first thing to fail.
Jax Mercer agrees to a fake relationship for convenience, not commitment. River Hale suggests it for reasons that sound simple enough: family pressure, social expectations, a few well-placed lies that need maintaining.
Neither of them expects it to require effort.
Or attention.
Or feeling like something in their life has quietly shifted direction without permission.
The rules are clear.
No real feelings. No complications. No reason for it to become anything other than temporary.
It doesn’t stay temporary.
And somewhere between pretending and repeating, they start noticing things they were never supposed to notice, like how easily silence settles when the other is near, or how being alone feels noticeably worse than it used to.
They were supposed to be acting.
They just forgot how to stop. -
