My Poor Baby Birds

Summary:

litany watches her kids die basically and then crashes out on dozer and kookoo

Work Text:

Sinrow was not a domain to be messed with. Litany was not a sin to be messed with. Her domain was one of the most stressful domains there were. The pressure of The Contraption, the need for going fast, all while being chased by Litany’s little helpers; the Guille’s.

The Guille’s were basically like Litany’s kids in her eyes. She loved every single one of them. All of them had names, all of them were loved. She cared for each and every one of them as a mother bird would do with her chicks.

But, the first time a sinner had beaten her domain, the sight of what happened at the end shattered Litany’s heart.

As she watched another sinner struggle, trying to run from the hundred of Guille’s behind them, she noticed how close to the end they were getting. She urged the Guille’s on, and happily watched as the sinner crumbled and a beacon got in their way, activating the last hook on The Contraption and ripping their head off.

“Another sinner down. Good job everyone.” Litany called. The Guille’s all cheered.

“Can we take a break? I am exhausted.” That was Guille #7, or Naomi. Litany flew down to their level, towering over them. She nodded, “Of course, all of you deserve a break, I’ll go fetch some of the others for their turn.”

“Oh, hell yeah!” Called Guille #57; Carter. Litany watched as the Guille’s ran off, and she flew off to go fetch some that haven’t been chasing yet.

Waiting patiently for another sinner to enter her domain, Litany looked out at all the restless Guille’s, all fighting one another. Laughing, joking around, gossiping, Litany loved listening to them all speak to each other. Then, a Sinner entered the domain. Watching with intent, Litany sent out her usual “JUMP”, “DON’T JUMP” orders, and watched as the Guille’s loomed threateningly behind them.

But, something was different. This sinner was going so fast Litany could barely keep up with them. Feeling worried, since she had heard from Sorrow and Carnation what had happened to their domains, she quietly hoped the beacons would catch them off guard like how they did with the previous sinner.

They skipped the gateways easily, they outran the Guille’s, and all of them were doing their best to catch up. Litany hoped something would go wrong, but the sinner's wingburst was giving them too much momentum, too much speed for anything to catch them off guard.

Litany felt scared. She wouldn’t know what would happen. Then, the sinner reached the end. They stood there, staring out towards the approaching Guille’s, behind them was nothing further, there was nowhere to go, nowhere to hide, nowhere to run. Litany smiled, thinking that surely the Guille’s would catch them now, but right as they got close enough, a random, giant pillar came and crushed nearly all of the Guille’s approaching the sinner.

There was blood everywhere. There were only about 4 surviving Guille’s; stragglers that had noticed the pillar and steered clear of it. Litany didn’t cause that. She would never kill the Guille’s on purpose. It must’ve been Genesis that had saved the sinner. Litany dropped down on her knees, barely even paying attention to her surroundings. She felt light headed, sick, even.

Those were her kids. At least that’s what she viewed them as, and they all treated her like a mother. So many had just been lost, and the sinner didn’t even flinch when it happened. Litany quickly soared down, landing with the 4 surviving Guille’s, and started to sob. The sight of all the blood made her sick. Those were her kids.

One of the Guille’s, Guille #18—Feather—slowly approached Litany, “What… even happened?”

“I..- I don’t..- I-” Litany couldn’t even speak properly. She couldn’t stand anymore, and collapsed onto the ground. The remaining Guille’s rushed to her side, scared and confused. After all, they had just watched their friends—their family—die in front of them.

And Litany had to watch this happen many times over again as people learned her domain. Got better at Sinrow. So many Guille’s were lost. It became so much of a problem that Litany had to physically walk away every time someone almost reached the end. It didn’t matter if they actually did or not, she just couldn’t watch her fucking kids get killed again.

She knew that it was just Genesis protecting the sinners. She knew how much His Love had protected them all. She knew that this would be a constant cycle of torment, for both her and the Guille’s. She knew they were scared, and she was too.

Every time she would send the Guille’s out there, they never knew if they would succeed in killing the sinners or not. They never knew if they would be the next ones to die. They never knew if they would be the next ones to be crushed into nothing but pools of blood and shattered bone.

Litany had started to grow numb to it. So much so that she had even started to neglect the Guille’s, and her brothers had to care for them instead. “What’s the point if they’re just going to die soon, anyway? It truly is inevitable.” She would argue.

“Jeez, I’m glad I d0n’t have a d0main.” Kookoo said, looking exhausted.

“I’m glad Seesay and Sundial are safe.” Dozer nodded.

Litany angrily puffed out her wings and turned on both of them, “Don’t you two fucking realize how much god damn pain I’ve had to go through!? I don’t care if they’re not biologically my kids like you have with Seesay and Sundial, but they matter to me just as much!” She towered over the both of them, her extra, hidden eyes opening in pure anger, “I’ve had to watch more than a hundred of them get crushed! Genesis may say He loves everyone, but He doesn’t love us anymore! Don’t you fucking get it? After we fell into Sin’s clutches, we became nothing but obstacles! Nothing but temptations to guide the sinners away from!”

At this point, Dozer had started to cry, hyperventilating and curling up into a ball. Kookoo immediately went to comfort his brother, and Litany instantly felt guilt for what she had just done. She had never made Dozer cry before. The sight and sound of him crying because of her shattered her heart more than it already was. Shame washed over her like a tsunami, and she turned and left. She was tearing her family apart even more. All because of what she watched happen with the Guille’s, when a sinner beat her domain for the first time.
