Summary
They will not take my pride, and they will not take my dignity.
So, I straighten up. I fix the front of my dress, smooth down my hair, and begin to walk up to the stage. I finally process all the noise happening around me, all the cries of outrage. I doubt it’s because anyone actually cares about me, perse; it’s probably because people from the Town are never reaped.
The crowd parts slightly around me, like they’re not entirely sure whether they should be watching or looking away. The sound of my shoes against the ground feels too loud now, like the world has quietened down to give me a sick kind of spotlight.
I climb up the steps to the stage, standing next to Louella, looking out at the crowd.
When my eyes fall on Audra Jade, standing there in her bright dress, tears streaming heavily down her face, it finally clicks.
I will never see her again.
I will never see my family again, either.
This is it.
