Httyd American dragon AU

Summary:

In a world where dragons exist in secret, Hiccup is expected to follow in his mother’s footsteps as the city’s Dragon Protector—the guardian of both humans and dragons.

There’s just one problem, he has no powers.

But when a sudden, painful transformation awakens something inside him, Hiccup finally becomes a dragon… just not the kind anyone was hoping for.

He’s a Night Fury, a form so rare and dangerous that if the Dragon Council discovers the truth, they won’t hesitate to strip him of his powers.

With the help of Windwalker, a trusted family friend, Hiccup is forced to hide who he really is as he enters dragon training alongside rivals who already doubt him. As pressure builds and suspicion grows, keeping his secret becomes more dangerous than revealing it.

Because if the truth comes out, Hiccup will become a target.

Notes:

This is a crazy au idea that I have, basically, it's the world of American Dragon combined with the character of HTTYD,

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Introduction to this crazy world

Chapter Text

Little explanation

What happens when you encounter an old cartoon about a kid who can turn into a dragon and combine it with one of your favourite franchises? I was randomly scrolling through the internet as I do, when I encountered some edits of this old Disney show called American Dragon: Jake Long, and I thought this could be interesting if we combined it with HTTYD, and that is how this au came to be.

So here is the plot:

In the modern world, magical creatures have learned to adapt and live hidden in plain sight; yetis work desk jobs and have man buns, mermaids move around in wheelchairs, fairies work in delivery services, and wizards can use magic to assist with their homework.

And there is one kind of fantastical creature that helps maintain the peace and security of this realm: the dragons. They are powerful shape-shifters who can change form from human to dragon, and they are held in high regard.

Valka Haddock was the beloved dragon protector of the city of Berk, but one day, she vanished. Since then, the position of dragon protector has not been officially filled. Everyone was hoping that her son Hiccup would be the next dragon protector, but he does not seem to have inherited her powers.

Character Bios – American Dragon x HTTYD AU

Part 1: The Berk Kids

Harold "Hiccup" Haddock

  • In this AU, Hiccup comes from a long line of dragon protectors. His father serves as mayor and leads a specialized magical task force that protects and regulates the magic community.
  • Everyone expects Hiccup to inherit that legacy, but he appears to have no powers or natural strengths. Whenever he tries to help (whether with potions or inventions), things tend to go wrong.
  • Everything changes when he unexpectedly transforms into a dragon, only to be revealed as one of the rarest kinds in existence.
  • Dragon Form: Night Fury
  • Design: Dark scales patterned with subtle rosette markings; blue undertones glow when he uses fire or magic.
  • Abilities: Exceptional speed (fastest in the group), stealth and concealment (especially at night), plasma blasts, echolocation.
  • To stay hidden, Hiccup uses a potion that turns his scales green and prevents a full transformation, masking his true identity.
  • If his identity as a Night Fury is discovered, the Dragon Council will strip him of his powers. They consider that Night Furies are far too dangerous a power to possess.

Astrid Hofferson

  • Astrid comes from a family struggling with financial hardship, forcing her to work hard from a young age.
  • When she earns a scholarship into the dragon training program, she sees it as her chance to secure a better future for her family.
  • A top candidate for Dragon Protector, Astrid is disciplined, driven, and fiercely competitive.
  • She resents Hiccup’s place in the program, believing he was admitted because of his family name. What frustrates her most is that he doesn’t seem to take it seriously; she suspects he deliberately underperforms, but doesn’t understand why.
  • Dragon Form: Deadly Nadder
  • Design: Pale blue scales with yellow-white streaks that glow during storms; blade-like wings and a spiked tail.
  • Abilities: Highly skilled combatant, precise fire attacks, wind-slicing strikes, and the ability to launch tail spines.

Stojan “Snotlout” Gary Jorgenson

  • Snotlout grows up largely ignored by his overworked parents and constantly seeks attention and validation. (They both work in the magic task force)
  • The Jorgenson family was once considered for the Dragon Warrior role, but his father failed to earn the position. Snotlout is determined to succeed where he didn’t, to finally earn his approval. He believes he is the best choice (he is not)
  • Loud, arrogant, and attention-seeking, Snotlout masks deep insecurity, especially about his height. He often targets Hiccup to feel superior.
  • When Hiccup gains dragon powers, Snotlout convinces himself that Hiccup must be something weak because there’s no way he could be better than him.
  • Dragon Form: Monstrous Nightmare
  • Design: Bright red-orange scales; flames constantly leak from his body when emotional.
  • Abilities: Full-body ignition, explosive gel, intimidation-based combat. Powerful, but he burns energy trying to look impressive.

Finnik “Fishlegs” Ingerman

  • As a child, Fishlegs was small, thin, and physically weak. He was also one of Hiccup’s closest friends.
  • His sudden growth and dragon powers came as a surprise, especially since his mixed heritage hadn’t produced a dragon in generations.
  • After gaining his powers, Fishlegs becomes deeply immersed in dragon knowledge: history, biology, and strategy. His passion slowly turns into an obsession, unintentionally creating distance between him and Hiccup (helped along by Snotlout’s influence).
  • Despite this, he’s genuinely excited to join the dragon training program.
  • Dragon Form: Gronckle
  • Design: Round, heavy body with mineral-like plating; scale colors shift depending on diet.
  • Abilities: Lava blasts, extreme durability, tactical analysis (can identify enemy weaknesses mid-fight). Defensive rather than aggressive—methodical, strategic, and surprisingly creative.

Ruth “Ruffnut” & Tuxford “Tuffnut” Thorston

  • The twins are pure chaos. They thrive on pranks, often teaming up with (or against) Snotlout for their own amusement.
  • They possess a rare and unusual ability: as twins, they can merge into a powerful two-headed dragon. The catch? They can barely stand each other half the time.
  • Individually, they can transform, but their solo dragon forms are smaller, lack firepower, and are far less effective.
  • They joined the training program primarily to learn how to work together—something they struggle with constantly.
  • Dragon Form: Zippleback (two-headed)
  • Design: A shared body with two distinct heads:
  • Ruffnut: Sharper features, more aggressive demeanor
  • Tuffnut: Goofier expressions, erratic movement
  • Abilities: Gas + spark = explosive attacks (timing is inconsistent), highly unpredictable in combat—chaotic, but often accidentally effective.

Stoick “the Vast” Haddock

  • Before he was mayor, Stoick was a relentless detective chasing down bizarre cases. One investigation led him straight into Valka’s path — a mysterious woman who warned him to walk away. But Stoick was stubborn, and his persistence dragged him into a hidden world of magic he never imagined.
  • Valka saved his life, then, trusting him, revealed the truth about the magical world and, against all rules, chose not to erase his memories. Instead, they became a team, fell in love, and Hiccup was born.
  • When Valka disappeared without a trace, Stoick buried his heartbreak in work. He climbed the city ranks, eventually founding a specialized magical task force to protect the streets until a new Dragon Protector could rise.
  • Stoick resents Windwalker for abandoning dragon duties after failing to save Valka, though deep down he knows it wasn’t his fault. He still allows Windwalker to see Hiccup, but with lingering bitterness.
  • His bond with Hiccup is complicated: Stoick loves his son fiercely but struggles with his reckless streak. When Hiccup inherited dragon powers, Stoick thought it would finally unite them — but instead, it drove them further apart.
  • Now, Stoick is consumed by two looming threats: magical creatures vanishing across the city, others appearing stripped of their powers, and a monstrous entity prowling the streets. He won’t rest until both mysteries are solved.

Gobber the Belch

  • In this AU, Gobber is half troll: big, hairy, strong, and durable. He looks intimidating, but beneath it all, he’s a gentle soul with a heart of gold.
  • Stoick’s oldest friend and partner-in-chaos, Gobber, casually revealed his troll heritage one night after Stoick confided in him about the magical world. Stoick’s reaction? A tired “…Okay.”
  • Gobber once fought beside Stoick in the task force until a brutal mission cost him an arm and a leg. Retirement didn’t mean retreat, though — he became the gruff, relentless trainer of recruits. His methods are tough, his standards tougher.
  • After Valka’s disappearance, Gobber became a steady presence for Hiccup, often bridging the gap between father and son. His greatest frustration is watching two people who love each other fail to communicate.

Wilson “Windwalker” Zephyrus

  • This AU blends Windwalker from the HTTYD books with the archetype of the old mentor, giving Hiccup a guide on his journey.
  • As a young man, Wilson earned the nickname “Windwalker” because his dragon flight looked like he was strolling across the sky. Calm, reliable, and respected, he was one of Valka’s closest allies.
  • The night Valka disappeared, Windwalker was there — but the event shattered his memory and left him gravely wounded. He lost the ability to fully transform, and with it, his place among the dragons.
  • Haunted by guilt, he retreated from conflict and opened a potion shop, living quietly while carrying the weight of his failure.
  • When Hiccup’s powers emerged, Windwalker was the first to find him. Fear gripped him — fear that the boy’s secret would be discovered and exploited.
  • Dragon Form (Past): A sleek sky dragon with a long neck, purple-and-green scales, wickedly curved claws, and a crocodile-like snout tipped with a small horn.
  • Abilities (Now): Though he lost his dragon form, Windwalker retains vast knowledge of potions and runs a “natural remedies” store.
