Contents
The series begins the night Billy Palmer (William Byers) is kidnapped, and ritualistically sacrificed to a Dark God. Much of the first episode is defined by Billy's absence in the lives of those looking for him. His mother Sarah Palmer (Winona Ryder) works with her best friend and double sister in law Jennie Orson (Patty Newby), a practicing Witch, try to find him through supernatural means, and find traces of anti-magic seals in the location of the ritual. The B plot in this episode follows Billy's best friends Jack Starling (Carlton Reeves) and Mickie West (Angela Hargensen) in search for Billy through more traditional means. The plots interact and eventually the full party comes across Billy, who is dazed and confused, unable to recall what happened the night before. The first season deals with the greater mystery of who murdered Billy, and how he woke up with no injuries outside of a hole in his shirt.
Many allies and enemies are made throughout the five seasons of Hollow Point, but a few consistent threads remain across all of them. There is the Clan of Witch Hunters, The Dark God of the Pinegrove, the seedy underbelly of the supernatural world underneath Hollow Point, and several human threats that sometimes seem more serious and negatively intentioned than the supernatural threats of the series. Billy fights these forces of darkness with his friends and family, and creates a coven that grows across the seasons. The concept of Billy being a conduit is expanded throughout the seasons and his powers are considered a possible metaphor for sexuality, given the coding of the original novels the series is based around. The show does not dive into this coding, and the series creators are often quoted saying it "was not in the cards" for that aspect to come to fruition in the show proper.
Main
• Billy Palmer— Played by William Byers — is a teenage witch boy residing in the small town of Hollow Point. He is a kind boy, known in town for being one to stand up against the bullies of Hollow Point High, even when he doesn't have much to fight back with. He finds that with great power comes great responsibility when his powers are unlocked following the ritualistic sacrifice that was attempted on him when he disappeared on Nov 6th of his Sophomore year of high school. He is a central figure in the plans of The Hunter's society, which is later revealed to have been employed by Billy's uncle, The Warlock Halaster. Billy's progression and tuning of his craft is catapulted by the attempted ritual using a single hollow point bullet that was preformed in the pilot episode.
• Sarah Palmer — Played by Winona Ryder — is Billy's mother, a lover of the esoteric and paranormal despite not having any natural born tendency towards magic. She uses practical magic, often potions and tarot card readings that she has perfected. She runs a small tea and shop in town where she sells her famous blackberry jam. Billy often helps at the shop, and the two often scope out cases from town from the visitors. Sarah is often visited by the ghost of Christopher Palmer, her husband who died in a war with the Dark God who resides in Hollow Point. He is not visible to anyone but her. She is a little silly, sometimes.
• Jennie Orson — Played by Patty Newby — is Sarah's childhood best friend, and her sister in law in two seperate ways. She used to be with Caspian Palmer, the brother of Christopher Palmer, but was widowed like Sarah was. Sarah then married Bob Orson, Patty's brother. It's a strange family, but one that Jennie takes the responsibility of very seriously. She is Billy's teacher of magics, and is a central figure in his life.
• Jackson (Jack) Starling — Played by Carlton Reeves — is a plucky teenage boy, and Billy's childhood best friend. The two are known for being inseperable, and in earlier seasons Jack was very active in protecting Billy from the forces of darkness. His character shifted focus to the ongoing romance of Billy's other best friend, Mickie West. The two start the series butting heads, but by season 3 are an item. Jack loves photography and blue razzberry slushies.
• Mickie West — Played by Angela Hargensen — is the head of the school newspaper at Hollow Point High, and is one of Billy's dearest friends. What were originally thought to be headaches follow a concussion in the first season are later revealed to be visions, ones that she uses when the teens form a coven following Billy's reappearance. She is in a relationship with Jackson, and the two are known for their on/off again relationship throughout the final 3 seasons of the show. Her powers and abilities are focused more from season 4 onwards.
• Clancy the Librarian/The Warlock Halaster/Caspian Palmer — Played by Edward Creel — is a character with many names (too many, some may say). Introduced as the school's librarian, Clancy in the first three seasons is a treasured ally to the teens, often sheltering them from the consequences of the Supernatural invading the school grounds. He teaches Billy a great deal of magics, and even convinces him to try spells and incantations that Billy's mother and Jennie think he is too inexperienced to try. It is later revealed he has been planning to make Billy the most powerful witch so he might siphon his magic and restore himself to his full potential. The final two seasons see him don his title The Warlock Halaster and work against the protagonists.
• Tristan Velasco — played by Chance Ramos — is a child of a witch hunter and a witch who gets introduced in season 3. He is conflicted with his place in life, especially in the small town of Hollow Point. Originally from New York, Tristan is a bad boy who will do anything to achieve his goals. He warms up to the main party in his introductory season, and is the final member of the fan dubbed "Core Four" (Billy, Jack, Mickie, and Tristan).
Others
• Raven Miley— Played by Robin Buckley — Introduced in season 2, Raven is the Keeper of the Lighthouse on the cliff. The Lighthouse is a mysterious location in the first season, but Raven proves a near and dear ally to the cast through her job. The Lighthouse is not for incoming ships, but a beacon for supernatural occurrences that Raven has been tracking on her assignment in the town of Hollow Point.
• Principal West — Played by Larry Kline — is the Principal of Hollow Point High, and Mickie's father. He is a stern figure, and often gets in the way of the teen's plots.
• Winnifred (Winnie) Todd — Played by Nikki Baxter — is a character who exists.
• Emerson the Doorman — Played by Tommy Hagan — is a supernatural creature in the shape of a hotel doorman. He also happens to work at the Mountblac Hotel for the Mountblac Family. He is strange and mysterious, and is known for his signature unnerving nature around any new guests to the hotel.
• Adrienne Mountblanc — Played by Carol Perkins — is the main attendant of the Mountblanc Hotel and Estate, and is the youngest daughter of Martin and Charmaine Mountblanc. She is a frazzled figure who is often seen fussing about messes made in the Hotel and Manor.
• Cecelia Mountblanc — Played by Tammy Thompson — is an elusive figure at the Mountblanc Hotel and Estate, but is the eldest daughter of the family. She runs the hotel behind the scenes, and is spoken of in hushed whispers, lest her advice be listened to. Revealed to be one of the Everlasting Witches, and actually the great-great-grandmother of Adrienne. She made a contract with Emerson, and lead to the ruin of the Mountblanc family line.
• Kevin Jones — Played by Richie Tozier — is a fan-favorite character who appeared in the first 3 seasons of Hollow Point. He was killed in season 2, and his ghost made appearances in season 3 before he was laid to rest. Kevin is a character many shipped with Billy in earlier seasons, before Starmer became a larger force in the fandom.
Episodes
Season 1
Opening with Billy's kidnapping and ritualistic murder attempt, this season rolls quickly into it's darker themes. The majority of the first episode follows the people in Billy's life looking for him, whereas the episodes post-pilot focus on Billy's POV most of the time. This first season introduces the history of the witches of the sleepy Oregon town of Hollow Point, a vast line of ancestry dating back to the Salem Witch Trials. The primary mystery the protagonists unravel is the group of Witch Hunters working for the Dark God of the Pinegrove, an entity that exists between worlds. They were the ones who used a hollow point bullet to try and sacrifice Billy to this god, but he survived. It is never explained how he survived, though the mystery is teased throughout all 5 seasons.
Season 2
Introducing several fan-favorite characters, season 2 starts where season 1 left off with the reveal of The Dark God of the Pinegrove, and the plans of the Clan of Hunters. This season focuses on building up the world of the first season, though is known for introducing multiple inconsistencies that plague the rest of the seasons worldbuilding and logic. This season is still highly rated amongst the fanbase. The Mountblanc Mystery is still a highly debated arc, though their presence in later seasons kept much of the spirit of the show alive while it started to decline.
Season 3
The second most highly debated season of Hollow Point, this season is one of the flashiest seasons of the show. Taking place in the summer between Junior and Senior year, this season was a hit with mainstream audiences, and saw the show catapult into an all-new level of cultural relevancy. This was the period known as "Hollowmania" for how much it seemed to sweep across fansites and social media. Though contentious in it's own right, this season brought many twists and turns that would shape the following two seasons, such as the reveal of Clancy as The Warlock Halaster/Caspian Palmer. This season sees Billy lose a great deal of his powers to him in the highest rated season finale in the series.
Season 4
Hollow Point had a 4th season. Jackson's sister died from a bomb. Billy's magic had set off that bomb. This season jumped the shark and scraped the bottom of the barrel in many ways, but the drama and angst carried fan circles between seasons in hopes that the events of this season would be addressed in the plot of season 5. Foreshadowing is a literary device.
Season 5
The final season of Hollow Point is known for many things, and one of those things is Queerbait accusations. The previous seasons seemed to hint towards the possibility that Billy liked Jack, and fan wars over the love triangle between them and Mickie took a lot of fan spaces by storm between seasons 4 and 5. Expectations were set in the fanbase by baiting videos about multiple ships that were run by The CW during this time that gave fans hope that the main character of such a popular show could be LGBT, and possibly end up with his childhood best friend who he'd shared the most screentime with.
The most controversial season of the show, season 5 is also known for it's extremely critically panned ending. In a last ditch effort to defeat Clancy once and for all, Billy sacrifices himself so his magic cannot be taken by anyone else. Many of the scenes in this finale were criticized for overcrowding, as the final season made sure to close out every single side characters plot, but failed to address several lingers concepts and theories the fans had dating all the way back to season 1. At this point the joke the author of this fanfic is trying to make isn't funny, it's just kinda sad. I fucking hate Stranger Things. Back to not breaking the 4th wall. Hi. This is me breaking the 4th wall.
Reception
Hollow Point has a large worldwide fanbase, and is critically allotted for it's first few seasons. Though the show never won any of it's multiple nominations, it is known for it's music and atmosphere that carried it's reception in pop culture. The show's novels are still ongoing, though the 5th and final book has been in production even prior to the show being greenlit. Many critical fans say the final book will never come due to the end of the series. The author Darien Jay has made no public statement on the matter in over a decade. It is rumored the author is writing Starmer (the non-canon fan ship between Jack and Billy) fanfiction on Archive of our Own under a pseudonym.
Though a critical darling for it's earlier seasons, the final season is considered one of the worst endings in modern television pop culture. The discourse around it's ending lead to a campaign known as "Fix The Edit" started by Hollow Point fan creator PaladinForPalmer. The campaign started as a re-release of the final season with a fix to it's ending, but quickly escalated into a harassment campaign against the showrunners and leading stars. Lead actor William Byers was reported to have minimal public appearances, and has not attended a convention or any show publicity events since the pre-release for season 5.
