Work Text:
Denki constantly falls for someone. A random girl whose name he didn't even know. She was beautiful, and Denki was weak for beautiful people. Then there was a guy from the academy, then a girl from a shop, then some girl from a ball, and so on.
Yes, Denki falls in love very often, but it never lasts longer than a week. Seriously, he had a crush that he forgot about fifteen minutes after deciding he liked her.
Although calling it a crush is harsh. Infatuation is a more fitting word.
Yes, definitely better.
So, Kaminari constantly develops infatuations with someone. And that's normal.
But there's one person he's liked for over three years.
And that's an absolute record.
And it's none other than Izuku, damn it, Midoriya – his brother's best friend and, coincidentally, a prince.
A damn prince!
A damn beautiful prince, if you ask Denki. So beautiful that no painting could capture all his beauty.
Just think about how stupid Kaminari is for falling for royalty. This person is clearly not on his level.
And even though Denki is part of a ducal family, it's still not his level.
He's so pathetic and stupid that people don't even consider him worth anything.
His parents, of course, love him, and maybe his cousin cares about him too, but that's not certain.
Okay, maybe Denki is being dramatic. It's just that people tend to think he's stupid because of his bad grades and therefore don't think it's important to tolerate his presence.
The situation is worsened by the fact that his wonderful and exceptionally intelligent cousin, Katsuki Bakugo, is perfection itself.
And Kaminari is incredibly proud of him, don't get him wrong. But he's a little hurt by the fact that his efforts and magical abilities pale in comparison to Bakugo's.
But we've strayed from the topic again.
Denki is unrequitedly in love with Izuku.
That's right.
Pathetic.
Useless.
Okay, we've strayed from the topic again. Denki will deal with his self-loathing later. When he's alone. In his room. At night.
So, Denki decided it was time to put an end to this whole unrequited love situation.
He just needs to stop thinking about Izuku's beautiful freckles, or his toned body, or how Denki incredibly wants those strong hands to grip his hips, fucking him until he's exhausted and shoving...
Stop.
Denki definitely needs to forget about the last point.
It's too bad it's not as simple as it seems
—
Kaminari openly admits that he wants to die. Or to learn how to become invisible – he's sure there's a spell that can do it.
At first, everything went smoothly, but then it all went sideways. And now he's ended up where he least wants to be.
In the infirmary wing of UA Academy.
It's not that he outright hates hospitals. It's just that the mix of smells of medicine, chlorine, and antiseptics makes him nauseous. And the white walls never bring him any peace.
Seriously, who in their right mind thinks white is a suitable color for the sick?
White is more frightening than calming.
But that's not the main reason Denki wants to end it all. Perhaps partly, yes.
The true reason for his suffering is none other than Prince Izuku.
Right now, he's trying to say something, probably about his condition, but Denki isn't sure. He can't hear anything, too busy thinking about not jumping out the window.
The absurdity of the situation makes Denki want to either howl or cry. He hasn't decided which yet.
Kaminari decided to avoid the prince. As soon as there was even a hint of his presence, Denki would disappear.
This went on for several days.
But then one day, the blonde found himself in the infirmary wing, not remembering how he got there, and Izuku looked as if Denki were dying and no help could save him.
Denki hopes that's not the case. He still wants to live, and death was not part of his plans.
"What?" Denki finally managed to stammer out. His voice was so hoarse and trembling that he winced involuntarily.
The prince let out a sigh of relief.
What the hell happened?
"We had a magic lesson, and one of the students accidentally hit you with an explosive spell," Midoriya replied to the unspoken question.
Denki noticed that although Izuku spoke calmly, he looked incredibly angry.
"But what are you doing here?" Denki asked. This question had been bothering him since he opened his eyes and saw Izuku in front of him.
"You address me as 'you'," Izuku replied.
"Okay, what are you doing here?" Denki rephrased the question. The whole situation seemed strange to him.
Yes, Izuku is his brother's best friend, and it's natural that he's worried about him. But usually, in such cases, Denki would be accompanied by either Bakugo or Sero. Never Izuku.
"I was worried," Izuku replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. And as if he had just made Denki's heart beat faster.
"Why?"
"You're my friend's brother, that's why"
Oh, I get it
It's only natural that Izuku is here because of his brother.
Denki blamed himself for thinking it meant something more.
Denki couldn't understand why his eyes were filling with tears.
Maybe it was the headache making itself known? Or just sheer exhaustion?
But definitely not Izuku.
"Hey, what's wrong? Are you feeling sick?" Izuku, as always, concerned and oblivious, looked at Denki with genuine sympathy.
It would be amusing to imagine Izuku's reaction if he knew the reason for Denki's tears was him. He would surely be upset or even angry at Denki's "foolishness" like being in love.
"I..." Denki didn't get to finish before the ward door burst open, and Bakugo stormed in with a shout.
But his anger instantly turned to surprise at the sight of Denki's tears. "What the hell is going on here?" he roared. Izuku just spread his hands helplessly, also not understanding.
"My head... it's splitting," Denki lied through his tears, though his head was indeed throbbing and swimming.
Denki held out his hands, a silent gesture requesting a hug. To his surprise, Bakugo accepted the request. On a normal day, he might have reacted differently, but not this time. Not when his brother was in such a state. Despite his reputation for being cruel and cold, Bakugo cared for Denki, even if he didn't show it openly.
Izuku shuffled awkwardly to the side.
Had they forgotten about him?
He should probably call a nurse...
Yes, he would do that.
—
A week had passed since that incident, and Izuku had started noticing oddities. Denki was avoiding him.
At first, he didn't want to believe it, thinking the other guy was just embarrassed after what happened in the ballroom wing.
But then Izuku became convinced that wasn't the case.
It became apparent during science class. There were only two free seats left: one next to him, and another next to a student everyone avoided due to his unpleasant odor and reputation.
When a late Kaminnari entered the classroom, he only glanced at the seat next to Izuku for a second before choosing Mineta. Even the science teacher winced, wishing Kaminnari good luck.
Izuku was deeply hurt.
Had he done something wrong?
Why was Kaminnari avoiding him?
Izuku was determined to figure it out.
