Summary
Everyone knew that love could heal. With just a kiss to the cheek or forehead, it could heal papercuts and little scrapes. And there were rules, of course. It could only be healed by a kiss, the press of lips to skin of the injured person. The more kisses shared between two people, the more potent the magic became. The love had to be mutual and genuine. The intensity of love altered what one was capable of healing. Stronger love could heal wounds that were deeper, concussions and diseases and gashes large enough to need stitches. Nothing much bigger, though.
Unless you were soulmates.
Soulmates were supposed to create such a bond that they could heal anything that afflicted their soulmate. The love between soulmates still had to be there, but the magic was more potent. The stronger the bond between soulmates, the more they could heal. There were even a handful of cases where a person had brought their soulmate back from the dead. A love so pure, so strong, so genuine, that it reached beyond death, that it pushed air into lungs and restarted a heart. All healed with a true love’s kiss.
These were just stories, though. And, besides, soulmates didn’t exist anymore.

Unless you were soulmates.
Soulmates could heal almost anything. Soulmates were known to be able to bring each other back from the brink of death. They could heal instantly, unlike other love that took time.
But soulmates were rare. Damn near impossible to find. So uncommon that people had come to believe that they no longer existed.

Until Shane dies on the ice...
“Rozanov—“
Ilya cried out. Shane looked so wrong up close. His face was unnaturally pale, lips so blue. He must have been cold. That was it, he was cold, laying out on the ice with his torso exposed like this, and Ilya had to keep him warm, and that would fix him. Ilya just had to warm Shane up and he would be fine and Shane would wake up and chastise Ilya for being so dramatic and giving away their secret.
“Rozanov, you need to back up—“
“He’s cold,” Ilya insisted through tears. “He doesn’t like being cold. You’re making him cold.” He picked up one of Shane’s hands. His fingers looked as if they’d been dipped in blue ink. Ilya pressed them between his palms, trying to warm them back up.
The medic hiccuped a sob. “Rozanov, I’m sorry.”
Ilya shook his head pitifully as tears continued to fall. “He just needs to be warm.”
But Ilya kisses him and ...
Ilya jerked back. “Он дышит,” he shouted. He tried again, pushing clunky English through his teeth, “He’s breathing!”
The medic captains reared back at once. “That’s impossible,” one argued. “His head was hit at the precise angle to kill him. We can’t bring him back from that. No one can.”
“A soulmate can,” one of the Raiders medics said in a soft voice. He looked at Ilya, assessing.
“That’s a myth,” the captain argued. “There’s no proven evidence of a soulmate ever bringing the other back from the dead. And besides, they don’t even exist anymore.”
The other captain looked at Ilya in a new light.
Below Ilya, Shane groaned, and Ilya forgot about the medic teams altogether.
“Shane?” He whispered.
Slowly, Shane’s eyes slitted open. It was the most beautiful thing Ilya had ever seen.
And then, the most beautiful sound Ilya had ever heard. Weak, confused:
“Ilya?”
Ilya burst into tears. He sobbed so hard it hurt.
He didn’t know what he was saying, didn’t know if it was in English or Russian or some language no one knew. He curved his body over Shane’s, careful to keep any weight off his broken ribs and chest plate. He buried his face in the crook of Shane’s neck. He pressed his cheek to his pulse point. It fluttered against his face, another sign that Shane really was alive.
Soulmates ❤️
“He won’t be right color.” Ilya said, and he was pretty sure he wasn’t making sense anymore, but he’d had a rough night and hadn’t slept in over twenty-four hours, so he thought he could be forgiven. “My mother was wrong color and was never right. Shane was wrong color. He’ll be wrong.”
Yuna shook her head. “What do you mean?”
“He was blue,” Ilya admitted, voice trembling with fear. “He was so blue. Like Mama was blue. Like Papa was blue. Shane was blue.”
Yuna stared at him, tears slipping down her cheeks. Then, she tugged Ilya into a strong hug. It was warm, maternal. Something Ilya had been lacking in his life since he was twelve years old.
“He’s not blue anymore,” Yuna said quietly. “He’s back to normal. He’s a little tired and sore, and his head has a wrap from surgery. But he’s okay.”
And tender moments with Yuna. My heart 🥺❤️
