Summary
Derek wakes up dead and dissected in a mortuary. A living corpse without any organs or any sort of explanation for why he's still alive. Haunted by the King in Yellow, the DMS, and thoughts of Avery's well-being, he stitches himself up and goes to get to the bottom of the situation with the unwanted passenger in his mind tagging along for the ride.
Avery keeps having recurring nightmares about something he's completely forgotten. All he wants to do is get answers without losing himself to the call of the water, promising him understanding if he would just sink into their depths and never wake up again. He doesn't understand why he's so paranoid about being seen but he has a few inklings on the connection between the gaps in his memory and the surveillance he's under. He intends to find out exactly what.
All Hastur wants is keep the both of them in Carcosa, as they should've been in the first place, had it not been for someone's interference in its affairs. It wants to know who was at fault. It wants to do whatever it can to retaliate for stealing what it was rightfully owed.
(tldr: Derek's a zombie, Avery doesn't remember, and Hastur already won.)
