Work Text:

Eddie woke up to an empty bed and the distinct lack of warm lips on his. He lay there for a moment, blinking at the ceiling, one arm stretched across the spot where Buck should have been. The sheets were still faintly warm, but the absence of that familiar morning kiss — the slow, sleepy one Buck always pressed to his mouth before either of them even opened their eyes properly — left a sour taste in his mouth.

He rolled out of bed, hair sticking up, wearing nothing but boxers and a hoodie, and padded downstairs. Buck was in the kitchen, humming under his breath while flipping eggs, already dressed for the day in one of his tight LAFD shirts.

The coffee maker gurgled happily. Sunlight poured through the windows like everything was perfectly fine. Eddie stopped in the doorway and crossed his arms. Buck glanced over with a bright smile. “Morning, baby. Eggs are almost done. I was gonna bring you breakfast in bed.” Eddie didn’t move. Didn’t uncross his arms. Buck’s smile faltered slightly. “…You okay?” “You didn’t kiss me.” Buck blinked. “What?” “This morning,” Eddie said, voice flat and salty. “You got up and didn’t kiss me. Not even a little one.” Buck stared at him for a second, then let out a soft laugh. “Eddie, I woke up early because I wanted to surprise you with breakfast. I was trying to let you sleep in.” “I don’t care,” Eddie muttered, leaning against the doorframe like a disgruntled cat. “You always kiss me first thing. It’s our thing. And you skipped it.”

Buck turned off the stove, biting his lip to keep from grinning too wide. Eddie in full salty mode was unfairly adorable — especially when it was over something this small. He crossed the kitchen in three strides, cupped Eddie’s face with both hands, and kissed him properly. Slow. Thorough. The kind of good-morning kiss that made Eddie’s toes curl and his shoulders relax despite himself. When Buck pulled back, Eddie still looked a little grumpy, but the edge was gone. “Better?” Buck asked, thumbs stroking Eddie’s cheeks. Eddie shrugged, fighting a smile. “It’s a start.”

“Oh, so we’re negotiating now?” Buck leaned in again, kissing the corner of Eddie’s mouth, then his jaw, then the sensitive spot under his ear. “I’m sorry I deprived you of your morning kiss, Mr. Diaz. How can I make it up to you?” Eddie finally uncrossed his arms and looped them around Buck’s neck, pulling him closer. “You can start by kissing me again. And maybe add a few more. Then we can talk about breakfast.” Buck laughed into the next kiss, deep and lingering, pressing Eddie back against the counter. “You’re so dramatic when you’re touch-starved.”

“Shut up,” Eddie grumbled, but he was smiling now, chasing Buck’s mouth every time he tried to pull away. “Just kiss me like you mean it.” Buck did. He kissed him until the eggs went cold and the coffee got forgotten. By the time they finally came up for air, Eddie’s saltiness had completely dissolved into warm, lazy contentment.

“Better?” Buck murmured against his lips. Eddie hummed, nuzzling into his neck. “Much better. Don’t skip it again.” “Never,” Buck promised, arms wrapped tight around him.

Crisis averted.
