Work Text:
Lucy walks out smiling after taking the Sergeant’s exam and is thankful that it’s finished. She feels much better than she did after taking the detectives exam, but she did have the absolute best study partner this time around. Tim’s leaning against his truck and Lucy can’t stop herself from smiling. “How do you feel Sergeant Chen?”
Lucy rolls her eyes and crowds Tim’s space. “I haven’t actually passed yet.” Tim goes to argue but she stops him. “But I have a pretty good feeling about it.”
Tim has no doubt that she passed. The next few weeks seem to fly by and drag by slowly at the same time. Lucy’s nerves have been all over the place and Tim has done his best to help calm them. “Oh, they’re being posted.” Tim looks at Lucy who’s watching Grey. “I’m not ready for this.” She mutters.
“Are you going to go look?” Tim wonders once Grey is finished.
Lucy nods her head then immediately shakes it. “Uh, no, I can’t.” She doesn’t know why she’s freaking out. Maybe because of everything with the detective’s exam. “Yes, okay. Wait, no.”
Tim has to hold back a laugh. “Do you want me to go look?”
“Uh, no.” She starts. “Yes please.” Her eyes are pleading with him and his head is feeling slightly dizzy. “Yes, you can look.”
Tim makes his way over to the list and his heart swells with pride. He knew that she would do this. “Lucy, come look.”
She takes a deep breath and walks over. Once she sees the list, her jaw drops and she moves her hand to her mouth. “Oh my god.”
“You are the top of the class as always. Typical star student.” Tim is so beyond proud of her. “You did it.”
“I did it.” Lucy murmurs and she feels Tim’s hands in hers. “I passed.”
“Of course you did.” She chuckles when she hears Tim speak. “I am proud of you, Luce.”
Grey interrupts their moment. “We have an open position.” He smiles at both of them. “I need a temporary Watch Commander which means that the roving Sergeant’s position is open.”
“Wait, really?” Lucy gasps. She expected to be on the worst shift of all but being with everyone she loves is the best news ever. “Yes, absolutely yes.”
Tim’s a bit confused until Grey pulls him out of his thoughts. “Are you ready to be Watch Commander?”
“Wow, uh, yes.” He is a bit surprised. “I say yes.” His mind is all over but this is some of the best news.
“Good.” Grey looks between the two in front of him. “Now go home and celebrate. You two deserve it.”
Tim ushers Lucy outside after they grab their things. “Are you ready to go celebrate?”
Lucy smiles softly. “With you, of course.” Tim grabs her hand. “As long as we go to your house afterwards, so that I can spend time with both of my boys.”
Tim thinks about it and she slaps his chest. “I think that’s doable, but first, do you trust me?”
“Tim, I trust you with my life.” It’s the easiest thing for Lucy to say.
First, he drives them to their food trucks, the one where they had their do over date and where they celebrate the most important moments of their lives. “Our spot.”
“Only the best for my favorite Sergeant.” Tim winks. He helps her out of the truck and they go to order their food.
Lucy rests her leg against Tim’s under the table. “I really passed.”
“You really are the star student, of course you did.” The smile on Tim’s face gives her butterflies and she can’t believe how proud of her he is. “You’re going to be the best Sergeant this station has ever seen.”
“Oh really? Even better than you?” Lucy teases.
“Oh, absolutely better than me.” He smirks. “Except for my legendary scowl.”
Lucy laughs and it’s his favorite sound. “I love that scowl.” Tim leans down and he pulls her in for a kiss, much like on their second date.
Tim cleans their trash up and they get back to his truck. “How about a walk on the beach? Then we can go grab supplies for ice cream sundaes.”
Lucy claps her hands together. “Yes, please, although you hate the beach.”
“But I really love you and I love being where you are.” Lucy rests her hand on his. The drive to the beach isn’t too long and it’s a beautiful night.
“It is so beautiful here.” Tim has his arm wrapped around Lucy and they’re listening to the waves crash against the shore.
“I’ve never seen anything more beautiful.” Lucy sees that Tim is looking at her.
“Oh, flattery will get you everywhere.” Lucy pulls Tim’s face down and places her lips against his. “You’re my favorite.”
Tim holds Lucy close to him. “I wanted to ask you something.” She pulls away slightly and raises her eyebrows. “That will happen one day too.” She giggles. “I want you to move in with me.”
“Oh really?” She shouldn’t be surprised but somehow she still is.
Tim nods and grabs both of her hands. “Yes, really. I hate spending my nights without you. I want to make it our home and I want to wake up by your side every single day. You are my future and I don’t want to ever sleep along again.”
Lucy wraps her arms around his neck. “I’d love nothing more than to move in with you. Now I can easily steal your clothes.” Tim chuckles and Lucy stops him with a kiss. “How about we go grab what we need for sundaes and head back to your house?”
The raindrops slowly start to fall so it is time to leave. Tim drives them to the grocery story that’s near the house. Lucy grabs a cart and they go to find what they want. “How about we get chocolate ice cream and peanut butter cup ice cream?”
“Those are the best flavors so of course.” Tim always seems to agree with her. “And we need sprinkles, hot fudge, and some m and m’s.”
“The perfect combination.” She grabs what they want and then also grabs waffle bowls. Tim grabs some more snacks and they head to pay.
It doesn’t take long to get to Tim’s house. “I’ll put this away for now. Why don’t you go get comfortable and then we can celebrate with our sundaes?” Lucy smirks. “Shirt and sweatpants are already waiting for you on the bed.”
“Best boyfriend ever.” She sways her hips and it takes everything in him to not follow her.
Five minutes later, she’s changed into his clothes and is now sitting at the kitchen counter. Her hair is in a messy bun and Tim can’t stop staring.
Lucy grabs them each a waffle bowl. Tim scoops the ice cream into the bowls, mixing both flavors. “We need a lot of sprinkles.”
“That’s the best part.” Tim tells her and he gives her extra. “These look perfect.” Tim sits on a stool next to her, after putting the ice cream away, and they clink their spoons together. “To you.”
“To us.” Lucy grins and takes a bite. Tim sees that Lucy has some on her chin and he uses his finger to wipe it up. Lucy takes the opportunity to pull him in for a kiss. “Delicious.”
They eat in a comfortable silence, with Kojo at their feet, hoping that they drop some. Tim insists on cleaning up and then tugs Lucy outside. They have a covered patio and a swing underneath to relax on. Kojo follows them and sits at their feet. “Come here.”
Tim sits and pulls Lucy to his lap, eliciting a giggle from her. “So much better.”
Lucy’s hand lands on his chest and lays her hand on his shoulder. “I think cuddling with you has become my absolute favorite hobby.”
“I can’t disagree with you there baby.” Tim murmurs and wraps his arms around her. “There’s nothing better than this and now I get this for the rest of my life.”
“Mm, that sounds amazing.” The rain is coming down hard but it is very relaxing. “Thank you for helping me study.”
“You did this on your own, just like you always do.” Tim whispers out to her. “You really are going to be incredible.”
“Thank you for always believing in me.” Tim tips her head back and softly places his lips against her.
“You are incredible, Lucy Chen.” She lays her head against his shoulder again and closes her eyes. “And I love you more than I could ever imagine.”
“I love you too and I’m so proud of you, Tim.” He kisses the top of her head and closes his eyes too. He wants to memorize this moment forever. It’s perfect. “Can Kojo sleep on the bed with us?”
Tim can see very clearly how his future will look. “He can’t be on the furniture.” Lucy’s looking at him with those eyes he can’t resist. “Just for tonight.” He grumbles.
”Don’t worry, I’ll make it up to you. I just want to cuddle my boys.” Tim’s heart swells and he really just loves her so much.
