Maybe, if Mel had turned, started walking, and begun dissecting the case aloud, Frank wouldn’t have done what he did.
Or possibly, it had been inevitable from the day he came back, and she told him he’d never let her down and that she didn’t want him to leave. Or perhaps, it became inescapable before that, back to the first shift they worked together, which had been the worst day of his life, but she had been an effervescent bright spot amid his humiliation and defeat.
Instead of all the things she could have done, Mel’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up at him, her face soft and wide open with trust and something he wasn’t willing to name but looked an awful lot like adoration. She whispered, “You make me incredible.”
...He glanced up, checking to see who was around before he did something monumentally stupid, like kiss her in front of all their colleagues. But there was no one nearby or looking their way, and he didn’t realize what he was doing until he did it. He grasped Mel’s hand, spun her around, and tugged her with him into the handicapped bathroom, locking the door behind them.
