Work Text:

Matt loves Mello’s hair.

He loves playing with it, brushing it, pulling it—

It’s like, his second favourite thing in the world. His first is Mello, of course.

”That okay?”

”Mm… maybe a little higher?”

He especially adored it when Mello grew it out a little more.

Not too much, but now it sits just past his shoulders, and it’s atleast long enough to put in a high ponytail.

Which, is what Matt’s doing.

From years of living with Mello, he’s learnt how to style hair. He can do anything ranging from buns, to ponytails, to intricate plaits.

Mello doesn’t mind being the subject of Matt’s little experiments, because it feels relaxing.

His fingers are tentative, making sure not to hurt or pull. He’ll occasionally scrape down Mello’s scalp with his nails, and Mello really likes when he does that.

”Better?”

Mello stared into the mirror, his hair held high in what looked like the worlds most perfect ponytail.

Two thin strands of hair framed his face, along with his fringe which sat just above his eyebrows.

”You’re so pretty, oh my god.” Matt said, completely starstruck.

Everytime he looked at Mello, he had this loving glint in his eyes; sometimes lustful, most of the time worshipping.

Mello really is the most gorgeous person he’s ever laid eyes on, and god if he doesn’t count every shooting star in the universe for landing him with someone so magnetising.

Mello grinned, glancing up at Matt. He turned around to face him, cupping his cheeks.

His hands are warm, and soft, and if Matt doesn’t just adore him.

Matt grinned too, leaning in to press a soft kiss to Mello’s lips.

Having someone to die for makes it so beautiful to live.

The fact that there’s 8 billion people on the whole planet, and someone like Mello has his eyes on Matt is such an unfathomable concept to the redhead, he still finds it hard to believe even after all these years.

He’s lazy, he’s boring, unsociable, he doesn’t go outside, and his only hobby is playing video games.

Mello’s productive, and he’s so angelic it’s otherworldly, and he’s like every flawless attribute of a person compacted down into one.

Sure, there’s the rage, and the arguments, jealousy, aggression—but isn’t that part of every relationship?

How could you know if your going to win the war, if you haven’t even fought the battle?

Exactly, you wouldn’t. Arguments prove that, no matter what, your bond is strong enough to survive.

Which, theirs clearly is, because its survived a myriad of arguments, of walking out, breaking-up and getting back together, and ultimately ended in marriage.

”Matt!” Mello tapped his cheek, glaring up at him.

Matt must’ve zoned out mid-kiss, far too distracted by Mello’s beauty to do much else.

”Sorry, Mells. Can I try something else?” Matt said, threading his fingers through that golden silk.

”I don’t know, can you?”

”Not sure. That’s why I’m asking.”

”Depends what,” Mello said, spinning on his heel. Once again, his back was against Matt’s chest, and his hair was at Matt’s mercy. He cherished the ponytail one final time before Matt took it out.

”I’m thinking… what are those things called?”

“Great description, baby.” Mello rolled his eyes.

He’s also picked up Matt’s sarcasm, and now he seems to be better at it than Matt.

Feeding off of eachother’s traits, adapting to eachother’s personalities so well they’ve basically blended into the same person.

”No—shut up. D’y'know like… where half your hairs up, and half of it’s down?”

A half up half down. It’s literally in the name.”

”Oh, yeah. You’re always so right, babe.”

”Mhm.”

Matt brushed through his hair, the bristles sliding easily through the strands. Not a single knot, no lugs—it’s literally perfection.

Playing hairdresser together is probably the closest to intimacy they’ll ever get.

Matt learning a new hobby for Mello, gaining new skills, and in return Mello gets a free head massage.

“Oh, she’s pretty. I love that.” Matt said, Mello’s hair now in a half-up-half-down with pigtails.

They’re even, too. Matt’s getting good at this.

”It’s cute.” Mello agreed, smiling.

”It reminds me of that supermodel—you know Misa Misa?”

“Who?” Mello’s stare hardened.

”Misa—“

Who?” Mello repeated in a harsher tone. Matt finally understood his mistake, that being not to compare Mello to anyone else. Ever.

”Mello. You look like Mello. God, you’re beautiful.”

“Thank you, baby.” Mello peppered his face in kisses, leaving blue lipstick stains across Matt’s face. Matt didn’t mind. In fact, he didn’t even attempt to wipe them off, he just kept them there.

He was blushing, hard, and had a shy, flustered grin on his face. Mello smiled, raking his hair back only to press another kiss to his forehead.

”Can you put it in a bun now? I wanna get in the bath, but I would really hate to ruin my hair by getting it wet, don’t you agree?” Mello pouted, a soft whine in his voice.

Matt nodded eagerly, utterly weak to Mello’s advances. His hands were already moving, taking out the last style to replace it with a messy, carefully put together bun.

They’re always the hardest, because Mello’s hair is just so thick, it never really stays in the bobble.

Matt’s tried his best to train himself however, and from the look on Mello’s face, it all seems to have paid off.

”Good? Or do you want it tighter?” He offered, a little self-concious.

”It’s perfect, angel.” Mello smiled, grabbing Matt’s hand. “Wanna join me?”

”Ah—uh, yeah, uh—I mean, sure, I guess—“ Matt babbled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.

It’s crazy what reactions Mello still draws from the usually stoic Matt, even after all these years.

Yeah, Matt is very deeply in love with him.

Mello feels the same way too, he hopes.
