Enid dragged Wednesday down the steps and through the crowds of people.
Enid had nagged and nagged Wednesday about attending the school’s anniversary, that consisted of fireworks, busy crowds, shouting, and lots of happiness
Wednesdays least favourite things
She knew it would end in a meltdown or worse
But Enid had been so excited and she didn’t want to let her down
“Yoko!” Enid shouted as they approached Yoko and Davina, who had already gone ahead of them and got drinks and food
They got situated in some very uncomfortable chairs as everyone dug into the array of different snacks.
Wednesday bit her cheek in anxiety.
Don’t get her wrong, Wednesday Addams didn’t get anxious about things.
Except she did.
She was autistic.
Though she hasn’t told anyone except Enid, it was pretty obvious—
She’d never admit it but she always knew she was different.
She thought maybe at Nevermore with other outcasts she’d make friends and feel less lonely
But it never happened
Then she got to know enid
She was everything Wednesday wasn’t:
popular, bubbly, likable
But she still cared about wednesday
She learned to care for her after her bad meltdowns
She included Wednesday in her hangouts and invited her to parties (even if Wednesday never showed up)
She would buy Wednesday matching gifts and partake in Wednesday’s special interests even if it was reenacting a murder
Recently they started dating. Enid had asked Wednesday one night while they watched a movie. Wednesday said a simple “yes” and Enid couldn’t be happier, jumping up and sounding squealing with excitement
Things with Enid were easy.
“How long till the fireworks start?” Enid shouted over the noise
Davina checked her watch. “Five minutes, I think.” Enid squealed in delight.
Wednesday couldn’t relate to her excitement; she never did. No one could keep up with Enid’s energy and excitement anyways.
Suddenly,
BANG!
Davina was five minutes off, it seemed.
Colour shot into the sky. Shouts of excitement came after
Wednesday flinched hard
She prayed no one had noticed.
Another bang.
Another.
And
Another
And another
Wednesday let out an involuntary shriek.
Her hands came up to her ears and pressed down to muffle the sound as much as she could.
She tried desperately to fight back the tears,
But then a high-pitched whistle.
BANG
A loud firework, louder than all the others.
Tears streamed down Wednesday’s face as she folded in on herself,
Hands on her shoulders,
Hands on her knees,
And back.
Wednesday sobbed, trying to fight the touch off.
“Guys! Don’t touch her right now.”
“Wens—are you okay?”
Enid’s voice.
“She’s having a meltdown—I shouldn’t have brought her here.”
Wednesday sobbed more.
She rocked back and forth violently and kicked her legs out, accidentally hitting someone.
“We should get her out of here.”
Yes, please.
“-back to the dorm.”
She felt hands on her arms leading her up and out through the crowds,
All while she sobbed pathetically.
She hoped no one got it on record.
Rumours would probably spread.
“Wednesday Addams had a tantrum at the fireworks display.”
No one would believe it.
Next thing she knew, everything was silent, and she was being placed on a soft bed.
“Breathe, Wednesday.”
She didn’t want to follow.
She didn’t want to seem vulnerable.
She hummed and rocked more.
“Mmm-” Wednesday tugged at her hair. The meltdown had already taken over and wouldn’t be easy to calm.
“It’s okay, sweetheart,” soft hands placed on top of hers, halting her pulls. “Don’t do that, sweetie.”
The pet names,
the ones Enid called her in vulnerable moments,
Wednesday took a big breath and started following along.
“That’s it, Wens, good job.”
Eventually, after minutes of breathing exercises, she opened her eyes.
She was in her dorm on her soft bed sheets, Yoko, Enid, and Davina’s worried eyes watching her. Her head pounded from the aftermath of the meltdown.
“I’m fine-“ Wednesday started, cheeks heating up at their gaze.
She embarrassed Enid in front of her friends, in front of the whole school.
“It’s okay,” Enid gave a warm smile. “Don’t apologise, just breathe.”
Yoko and Davina stood.
“We should give you some space,” Yoko said quietly, leading Davina out.
“Bye,” Enid waved
At the soft click of the door. Enid turned back to Wednesday.
“Here, let’s get these off,” Enid started, untying Wednesday’s shoes and pulling them off.
“i’ll run you a bath,” she said, standing from her position on the floor.
Wednesday didn’t move from her spot on the bed
Her brain felt mush,
she couldn’t talk or make any effort to do anything right now.
She felt extremely exposed and miserable, like she wanted to disappear
Enid returned when her bath was ready. She helped Wednesday to the bathroom
She started to lift Wednesday’s shirt when Wednesday let out a loud shriek and caught her hands.
Wednesday instantly felt bad. She trusted Enid completely. It just caught her off guard.
“Sorry—“ Enid yanked her hands away. “I’m sorry, I should’ve asked.”
“It’s fine,” Wednesday’s voice was extremely hoarse from the crying
She tried to lift her shirt up and over herself, but she felt seconds away from collapsing
Her hands shook and fumbled with it
“Erm—“ Wednesday started. “Could you help?”
“Of course,” Enid said. “Should I look away?”
“No, it’s fine,” Wednesday didn’t know what possessed her to allow Enid to see her naked and exposed (they hadn’t got to that part in their relationship), but she assumed it would be hard to undress someone with your eyes shut
Enid tugged Wednesday’s shirt over her head, leaving her in her bra and jeans
Enid gave a small smile, then reached for her bra strap.
“Can I?”
Wednesday gave a small nod.
“Yes.”
Her bra came undone, and Enid slowly moved it away and off her shoulders.
The cold air hit her chest, making her shiver. Her arms came up to cover herself
Enid then moved onto her jeans
She unbuttoned them and slid them down
“Step out,” Enid mumbled, and Wednesday followed the instructions.
“You want to do that part yourself?” she motioned to Wednesday’s underwear.
“Yes,” she said, not having the energy to give more than one-word answers.
Her underwear came off, and Enid helped her into the bath.
She sat down in the nice, steamy water and sighed.
She turned to look at Enid, who was kneeling by the bath.
Her hands tugged on Enid’s sweater to pull her closer. Enid obliged.
“Kiss?” Wednesday asked.
“Of course.”
The kiss was sweet and short. She could taste Enid’s strawberry chapstick, the weight of the day melting away at just her lips.
“I ruined your day,” Wednesday voiced. “I apologise.”
Enid’s fingers combed through Wednesday’s black, silky hair.
“You could never ruin my day. Your needs come before anything, always.”
Wednesday chewed her lip, tears threatening to spill.
As the water turned cold, Enid helped Wednesday out of the bath and got her situated into bed for cuddles.
Wednesday nuzzled against her neck as Enid rubbed her back.
“Goodnight, baby,” Enid whispered, though Wednesday was already out cold.
During the night, Wednesday stirred from the faint sound of fireworks and shouting outside, but Enid just whispered, “It’s okay. Go back to bed,” and she would settle.
