It Was Always You: A Throne Room and Mirror Scene Internal POV

Summary:

The last time I saw her, she still believed goodness could exist inside the Emerald City.
Five years later, I ran into the Throne Room expecting to find whatever was causing the animals to escape their cages. In reality, I knew who I was looking for. I find the woman I had been searching for this entire time.

The last time I saw him, he handed me a red poppy. He made me feel like anything was possible. When he ran into the Throne Room, I thought he came to capture me. Instead, I realized he’s not looking to capture me at all. He came to save me.

A canon-compliant emotional retelling of the Throne Room and Mirror scenes from Wicked: For Good told through fragmented dual-POV internal thoughts, emotional recognition, restrained touch, and the terrifying yet electrifying realization that the love between Fiyero and Elphaba never stopped existing.

Notes:

I've needed to do this for 7 months. Fiyero and Elphaba's mutual emotional collapse, more so Fiyero, left me reeling. Because we got immersed in them. We felt everything they did because nothing was said, so who got pulled into the deep end? We did! The viewers. So, I'm hoping to make a few readers smile, melt, and perhaps shed a tear. This was an emotional rollercoaster to write! Enjoy and share your thoughts!

Work Text:

Fiyero: “Silence, witch!” The words leave my mouth before I can stop them. Then she turns. There you are. Gorgeous green. Leather. Her. Oh Oz. Elphaba.

Elphaba: No. No no no...Pain drops straight through my chest. Five years.

Fiyero: Captain of the Guard. The hunts. The lies. And now she’s looking at me like I’ve just broken something inside her.

Elphaba: You chose them.

Fiyero: The thought moves across her face so clearly it almost knocks the breath out of me. “No.” Not aloud. Not yet. “Get water!” I shout behind me. Movement explodes instantly. Boots. Buckets. Noise. Good. Go. Leave. The doors slam shut. Silence crashes back in. And suddenly there’s only her. Alive. Alive alive alive... Why can’t I breathe? Forests. Roads. Ruins. Every whisper. Every rumor. Always looking for her. And now she’s standing ten feet away from me in black leather and fury. Cape falling from her shoulders. Older. Sharper. Still her. No. Even more. The last time I saw her she still believed goodness could exist in Oz. Now she looks like someone Oz built nightmares around. And somehow she’s even more beautiful.

Elphaba: His eyes still look the same. The thought terrifies me. No. Don’t do this to me now.

Fiyero: My weapon is still raised.

Elphaba: Oh, Oz.

Fiyero: Suddenly, I redirected the gun toward the Wizard instead. Treason. Don’t care. Nothing matters except...She’s here.

Elphaba: Why would you do that? Why would you risk yourself for me?

Fiyero: Her eyes flick toward the gun. Then back to me. Confused. Good. Anything is better than watching her think I became one of them. The Wizard is talking. Probably shouting. I barely hear him. I can’t stop looking at her. Still here. Still real. The cage slams shut. I step backward slowly. Still staring. Still unable to breathe.

Elphaba: Why do you look hurt?

Fiyero: She notices. The thought lands so hard it physically hurts. Because she notices everything. Always did. And Oz, she looks terrified to hope. Shiz crashes through both of us all at once. The dance. The cub. The train platform. The almost. This doesn’t feel like attraction anymore. This feels like starvation. I stay exactly where I am. If I move toward her right now, I think something inside me might actually break apart. And still, she steps toward me anyway. Oz…. Her. Hope flashes across her face so quickly she almost kills it.

Elphaba: Don’t. Don’t let this become hope. Because people always leave. People always choose safety. And yet Fiyero Tigelaar is standing in the center of the Wizard’s chambers, looking at me like the rest of Oz had disappeared around me. What are you doing to me?

Fiyero: The doors burst open. Reality crashes back in. Glinda. Oh, Oz. Glinda stops cold. Wizard in the cage. Gun in my hand. Then...the way I’m looking at Elphaba.

Glinda: “Fiyero…?”

Fiyero: I look at Glinda briefly. Only briefly. Then my eyes go right back to Elphaba. Like gravity.

Elphaba: Why are you still looking at me like that?

Fiyero: Because I found you. Because you’re alive. Because I cannot survive losing you again.

Elphaba: No…

Fiyero: Glinda sees it. I inhale sharply. Decision settling into place. Not sudden. Not reckless. Years old. “I’m going with her.” Silence. Even the room stops breathing.

Glinda: “What??”

Fiyero: But I’m already turning fully toward Elphaba. Steady now. Certain. The Captain. “Let’s go.” She stares at me like I’ve just undone the laws of Oz itself.

Elphaba: “What?” You would leave Oz? For me? No. Worse. You would choose me publicly.

Fiyero: “Let’s go,” I say again. Closer now. Certain. The guards will be back any second. Water. Chaos. The end of this moment. Glinda looks between us again. And suddenly her face breaks apart.

Glinda: “The two of you this whole time.”

Elphaba: Pain twists through me instantly. “No!” Too fast. Too wounded. “It wasn’t like that.” Because it wasn’t. That’s the tragedy. A dance. The forest with the cub. A train platform. Five years apart. Five years of unfinished feeling with nowhere to go. Please don’t think I wanted this to hurt you.

Fiyero: Glinda looks heartbroken. And Oz, I hate that too. Because I care about her. I do. Just not like this. Never like this. My eyes find Elphaba again immediately. Always. Always her. I cannot lose her again. Glinda sees it then. Not betrayal. Truth. Love. Tears fill her eyes. “Go. You deserve each other.” I catch up to Elphaba as we escape.

Elphaba: I can barely breathe. What is happening? "Fiyero, you frightened me. For a while back there, I thought you changed."

Fiyero: Don't disappear. Hold her hand. "I have changed." Relief.

Fiyero: The treehouse goes quiet around us. Or maybe it was always quiet. I can’t hear anything except her breathing. And mine. Too fast. Still too fast. She stands near the mirror with her back to me. Leather. Dark fabric. Tension pulled tight through her shoulders like she’s still waiting for the world to strike her first. Bracing. Always bracing. Oz, help me. Slowly. Careful. Don’t scare her. I move closer. She doesn’t run. The thought nearly destroys me. She’s letting me near her. After Oz. After the hunts. After me. My hands rise toward the clasps at her shoulders. Pause. A question. Please. She closes her eyes briefly. Doesn’t stop me. Relief crashes through me so hard it hurts. The clasp releases. The cape slips slowly from her shoulders. Heavy. Worn. Oh, Oz. Five years inside one piece of fabric. I feel the weight of it even after it leaves her body. And suddenly, she sways almost imperceptibly. Like she didn’t realize how much energy it took to carry it until now.

Elphaba: Don’t be gentle with me. The thought moves through me instantly. Sharp. Terrified. Because that’s worse. Because kindness breaks people open.

Fiyero: My hands tighten slightly around the fabric before I set it aside carefully. Then I look back at her. Still rigid. Still waiting. No. Not waiting. Preparing. Like, tenderness is something she has to survive. Oz. My hands return to her shoulders. Warm leather beneath my palms. And underneath that...tension. Bracing. Years of it. She stops breathing.

Elphaba: No one has touched me gently in years.

Fiyero: The realization moves through her so painfully, I almost feel it inside my own chest. Careful. Careful. I draw her slightly backward toward me. Not possession. Not pressure. Just....come here. Please. And she lets me. Oz. She lets me. After everything...she lets me close. Warmth radiates through the small space between us. Close enough now to feel her breathing change. Close enough to feel mine changing with it. The mirror catches us both. Black. Green and gold. The Wicked Witch of the West. The Captain of the Guard. Oz would never understand this. But Oz never understood her. I lean slightly over her shoulder. Not trapping. Not claiming. Just...here. With you. And finally, she looks at our reflection.

Elphaba: Oh, Oz. The pain is...unbearable. Sharp silhouette. Green skin. Eyes shadowed by exhaustion. Fear. Loneliness. I look exactly like the stories now. Like someone Oz built nightmares around.

Fiyero: A tear slips down her face. Then another. Visible. Silent. Oz, she’s crying. The sight of this tears straight through me. Not because she’s weak. Because she’s finally safe enough to do it. “You should never have carried this alone.” My voice barely exists. Soft enough to break both of us open. Her eyes close immediately. Like the words physically hurt. Because they do.

Elphaba: No one has ever looked at me and seen what it cost. Not really. Not until now. “I don’t know how to do this.”

Fiyero: The confession trembles out of her. Small. Terrified. Honest. And Oz...the worst part is understanding exactly what she means. Hope. Closeness. Being held gently instead of being feared. I meet her eyes in the mirror. Steady. Certain. “You don’t have to do it alone.” Silence. Then...devastation. Her breathing breaks first. Then the tears come harder.

Elphaba: Don’t say things like that unless you love me.

Fiyero: The thought moves through her so clearly it almost knocks the breath out of me. I know what she is thinking. I do. And maybe the most heartbreaking part is finally realizing she’s only just beginning to believe it.

Elphaba: I need space...to breathe...I need help believing he's here with me tonight....
