No More Idols

Summary:

A poem about the moment I let go of my idols.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

I did not need to revisit
my mother’s womb; no, I just
renovated the halls of my heart, tearing
down the portraits of my idols, dumping
them in a dustbin of disappointment. Only then
could I live
with myself, no longer haunted
by the ghosts of old promises
or the honeysuckle-scented lies
that clouded my eyes.

Notes:

This poem was inspired by the fact that in growing up, I idolized and adored the wrong people. I think my father was the worst of them.

Now, I'm struggling to change the behaviors they left me with. Hence, no more idols.

Thank you for reading!
