Work Text:

Yokohama harbor at night aws pretty much empty, felt kinda eerie It was a graveyard of shattered hopes The water, thick and sluggish, crashed against The old shipyard's pillars with a sound like wet sighs The sky was a purple blanket, draped over by the orange haze of the city's pollution.

Osamu Dazai stood at the edge of the pier. His trench coat was flapping in the wind, looking like a bird's wings that were giving up Someone stood next to him, their toes curled over the edge They clutched Dazai's hand tightly.

"You’re trembling " Dazai said. His voice sounded dull and empty His voice wasn't playful.

“No,” she didn't give him the time of day They peered into the water."It's not fear, Osamu It's anticipation.".

Dazai turned his head. Under the moon's glow, the bandages on his neck and wrists looked like they were gobbling up the light. He leaned in closer He pressed his forehead against Y/N's.

"It’s a long way down," Dazai remarked, his voice devoid of his usual playful lilt. He was looking at the dark, churning water below, his one visible eye reflecting the distant city lights like shattered glass. "The tide is coming in. It’ll be fast."

Their breathing matched up It was a beat in a world that had left them behind

“A Double Suicide" Dazai whispered. "A beautiful melody for two. No more noise. All clear, no more questions Just silence.".

Y/N. Closed their eyes. "Together."

“Together.”

"On three?"

"On three,"

They moved ahead No doubt about it, there was no hesitation He took a near-graceful tumble into the water.

The wind blew right through their ears That was a loud whoosh Then the world came to a dramatic end with a splash.

The chill wasn't what bothered Y/N The silence was palpable

The city's hustle and bustle, along with everyone's worries and sorrows, just disappeared They thought, "This is it." Their lungs were screaming for some fresh air Their thoughts didn't command their body to go into battle mode This is tranquility

His hand was still in theirs, right beside them They could sense his heartbeat easing off It felt like the ebb and flow of the ocean waves They floated down into the water

Then something happened.

A blue light sliced through the water It didn't feel quite right Dazai's got the Ability No Longer Human.

Y/N felt a strange sensation. Their life was falling apart Dazais touch was canceling their existence.. Then another thing went down Scrap metal from the shipyard got swept along by the currents

A heavy iron beam swung like a pendulum.

Y/N felt Dazai's grip tighten in the water He grabbed them closer The metal struck his shoulder, yanking his hand away from Y/N's

In that moment the world made sense again.

Y/N did not feel the surface. They got swallowed by the night Their lungs gave out Water gushed down their throats That was really tough.

They felt the last thing was the struggle of someone who didn't want to face death by themselves.

The morning sun was bright and cruel.

Dazai woke up on the sand. He puked up some seawater He was shivering His lungs were on fire He hung out there for a bit The taste of salt and defeat was in his mouth.

He looked to his right.

The sand felt silky underfoot No sign of Y/N.

"Y/N?"

His voice got a bit shaky He rose to his feet His trench coat aws drenched and quite hefty He strolled towards the water's edge He jumped right back in Looked for a yes or no answer.

He spent hours looking for it His lungs were wheezing His skin turned a shade of blue He didn't spot them until the tide turned.

They were caught between the towers Their eyes were wide awake Their face was stone-cold.

Dazai pulled them out. He set them down on the pier He checked for a heartbeat He was searching for some air Nothing was there.

The irony stung Dazai.

“Y/N!”

He was sitting there with Y/Ns body in his lap He didn't crack a smile He didn't crack a joke.

Dazai simply held them.

Dazai looked at his hands. They were shaking He figured out that his ability wasn't about being immortal He made sure he was the one allowed to stay.

He leaned in He pressed his forehead against Y/N's cold hair The quiet came back It was a quiet moment.

He shut his eyes Held onto the night, hoping it would claim him The sun kept on coming up It pushed him to keep going another day.
