A Late Night Call

Summary:

Their comeback is just around the corner, and Jimin, as always, can't sleep without Yoongi playing the guitar for him.
Only this time, Jimin just couldn't fall asleep, and things didn't end how they usually did.

Work Text:

"Hyung, are you awake?" The soft voice on the other side of the line asked with laziness. He didn't seem ashamed of calling Yoongi at three in the fucking morning, nor did he seem as if he was genuinely asking.

Normally, he wouldn't mind at all, but they were preparing for their comeback. They will have a hectic day tomorrow, so they should get a good night's sleep to accomplish everything they need to do the next day.

"What do you think?" He groaned at the phone and moved around in his bed. Jimin sighed.

"Hyung, I can't sleep." He mumbled, completely ignoring Yoongi's sarcasm. "I've tried, but I can't. Could you...?"

"Yeah, yeah," Yoongi mumbled back, getting up even before Jimin could finish talking. "I'll get the guitar. Is your door open?"

"Mmh." He nodded even if he knew Yoongi wouldn't see him.

The older man sighed this time, trying to really wake up from his sleep. "See you in five, Jiminnie."

...

Ever since they moved into the same building, they have been inseparable. Yoongi would never have guessed they would return to the dynamic they had before the breakup and the distance that followed, but somehow they managed to do it.

It happened at the end of their military service. Even though they were broken up and taking distance from each other, they were never really apart. They were still co-workers, after all, so they had to be together at least 6 hours a day.

The mere presence of the other there always made them feel calmer, like everything would be alright... Then came the military service; for the first time, Jimin and Yoongi had actually to be apart for a long period of time.

They couldn't bear it.

Jimin reached out first after his fifth month in the military. He had been busy, so he managed to wait five months before finally falling under the heavy weight of melancholy and texting Yoongi; they arranged a meeting for Jimin's next day off, and they ended up drinking coffee and talking about the good old times. Neither of them could admit it, but it was like a date. The perfect date.

After that, they realised that what they thought they had gotten over actually wasn't. The feelings were still there, stronger than ever, and Yoongi decided that he would have to be an idiot to let his Jiminnie slip away from him a second time. He bought the apartment next to Jimin's.

He would have never imagined that this decision would cost him endless nights of poor sleep.

His friend had bad insomnia and nightmares: he made the habit of asking Yoongi to come over and keep him entertained until he fell asleep.

Jimin couldn't get the reason why having Yoongi beside him made him feel safe enough to fall asleep easily, but it did. He had no other choice but to keep him close every time he had the possibility, just like now.

"You have to stop waking me up in the middle of the night, Jimin, you'll drive me insane at this rate..." The black-haired man complained as soon as he entered Jimin's bedroom. The younger rolled his eyes.

"You love it." He laughed. "Who else would ask you to play the guitar for them other than me?"

"Yeah, there's no soul on this planet that would ask me to play the guitar at three in the morning other than you..." He sighed. "I left my son alone because of you. Again."

This time, Jimin laughed harder, his body falling into his bed. "Tang will be alright, hyung. Besides, I always ask you to bring him, and you never do, that's on you only."

"I don't bring him because you're allergic to cats, you brat. I won't turn your home into a cat's hair factory."

"But you come over, and you're also a cat, hyung. It'd be only fair if you brought Tang too."

"Shut up." Yoongi fought back a smile and settled on Jimin's bed, sitting by his feet with his guitar on his lap. "Which song do you want?"

"I want a romantic tune." The blond man said as he settled a little further away from Yoongi, just to be able to see him better. "Whichever you know will be okay."

The older one saw Jimin settling into bed on his side and covering himself up to the neck with the blankets. He started playing.

Jimin's heart skipped a beat.

"Butterfly?" He asked in a whisper. Yoongi smiled and started humming the lyrics as he played the chords.

An avalanche of memories struck both of them.

They confessed their feelings for each other while making The Most Beautiful Moment in Life and started dating soon after. Yoongi then revealed that he had written Butterfly while thinking of him and their possible relationship.

It was a curious choice. It was a choice that made Jimin's heart beat faster.

The younger one decided to play dumb and closed his eyes, trying to relax enough to fall asleep and not think about his feelings or the haunting thoughts about his career that had led him to having insomnia in the first place.

Yoongi played three songs, identifying in Jimin the pattern he used to follow when he pretended to be asleep. The black-haired man stopped playing and waited five seconds before Jimin opened his eyes and gave him a tired smile.

"You're losing your magic." He said, trying to hide his frustration under humour. Yoongi smiled, but didn't laugh.

"Are you sure it's about the music? Or is something eating your head?" He asked with a knowing look. Jimin shifted uncomfortably.

"No, nothing, you're crazy. Keep playing, guitar boy." He mumbled and closed his eyes again. Yoongi didn't play the guitar again. He just stayed there, waiting. Jimin didn't have any other choice but to open his eyes and sit up. "I... I think I'm just worried about our comeback..."

"Okay..." He nodded in understanding, placed the guitar on the ground and sat closer to the blond man. "Why?"

"You know, people might not like the new album. They might not even remember us, and we won't be able to make music together ever again because of it." He mumbled.

It was all true: he was, indeed, worried, but Yoongi knew all about it. They have talked about it endlessly, and even though it was still something that worried them, it definitely wasn't the reason for Jimin's insomnia.

"Is it just that? Are you sure?" He asked. Jimin evaded his eyes.

"Yeah, what else could it be?"

"Jimin... What are you hiding?" He pressed again, looking for Jimin's eyes almost desperately.

It was a weird shift in dynamics: it was usually Jimin who sought his gaze to torment him, solely because Yoongi couldn't meet him in the eye without blushing and giggling.

"Nothing! You're so weird, Yoongi hyung. Why would you think I'm hiding something from you? You're literally the last person I would hide something from!" He said aggressively. That only finished to set Yoongi's mind.

Jimin was definitely hiding something, and it must be dire if he couldn't bring himself to tell him.

Now, Yoongi is no idiot. He is aware that, in cases like this, he shouldn't pressure the other person to tell him anything. He knows that would cause more pain than help to cease it, and he would be damned if he ever dared to cause pain to someone he loves only to get a juicy gossip...

But Jimin was different. He can't bear the thought of his Jiminnie suffering in silence, so much so that he couldn't even get a good night's sleep. No, of course not. The black-haired man had to be dead for him to not do everything in his power to know every problem Jimin had and fix it right away.

And so, he pressed again.

"Hey, brat, I know you, okay? I know you better than I know myself. I can see you're hiding something." Yoongi stated and then moved even closer to him. "Just tell me already."

"It's nothing! God, you're so annoying..."

"Park," He called. Jimin finally looked at him. "What are you thinking?"

"I just miss you! Okay? I can't sleep because I really miss you, and every time I try to close my eyes, I only see your stupid face and feel like I might cry if I can't see you for real." He dumped the information all at once, in just one breath. It was aggressive, as if the words alone weren't enough to kill Yoongi. "You coming in here with your guitar reminds me of the time you used to play the piano for me, and that usually calms me enough to fall asleep. I don't know what happened today..."

Yoongi used to play the piano for him back when they were dating. It was their thing, and it was one of the few activities they could actually do alone in those years.

"Min." The black-haired man said with a breathy laugh, and he squeezed Jimin's hands between his. "If you want us to spend more time together, you could have just said so. You don't have to get me here with an excuse every night. I can play the guitar or even the piano for you during the day! We can even stay in the studio after practice in our busier days."

Jimin shook his head. "It's... It's not the same..." He said with a pout. "I enjoy the silence and peace of night." The blond man admitted, but Yoongi knew it wasn't what he meant.

Jimin didn't really care about the silence; he cared about the discretion. They weren't as demonstrative with their affections during the day. Daylight was truly accusatory, and both of them found it terrifying.

They knew they shouldn't fall for each other again; it would bring too many problems to handle, yet they couldn't help it. Their hearts attracted each other like magnets and iron.

So, their only option was to meet secretly, pretend they weren't developing the same feelings again, and hide everything from everyone, even their best friends.

The night was their best and only friend in this situation. Yoongi understood it.

"We can make pyjama parties if you'd like." The older one joked to relax Jimin. The blond man shook his head again.

His words won the race against his reasoning, and before he could shut himself, he said: "I don't think I'll be able to control myself if I sleep beside you again..."

Oh.

Time froze for a second there, just enough for Yoongi to blush hard and for Jimin to hide under his blankets.

He wasn't aware they were being completely honest with their feelings now. Had he known, he would've said everything that crossed his mind the second he entered that room.

"You're good to go now." Jimin talked again from under the sheets. "I'm sleepy now. Good night."

Yoongi lay down beside the blond man and hugged his silhouette from above the blankets. "Don't worry." He said with a smile. "I wouldn't be able to control myself either."

Jimin lowered the blanket just enough to show his eyes and analysed Yoongi with a deadpan expression. He had always had a special talent to read the older one like a book, and just by looking at him, he could tell that he meant it.

It wasn't a joke. Yoongi meant it.

So Jimin took off the blanket and smiled at him. "Corny."

"Have I told you how pretty you look with your hair long and blond like that?" Yoongi asked as he caressed Jimin's cheekbone with his thumb, with the hidden intention of making him cringe and blush even more.

However, Jimin had had enough; the blond man threw himself into Yoongi's arms and crashed their lips together in a violent, needy kiss.

Their lips moved in automatically, as if kissing for them was as easy as breathing. As if what they were doing was right.

Jimin kissed him every way he could: hard, softly, long, short, passionately and quickly. Yoongi, of course, followed each kiss like a starved man.

He, who usually had control over himself and everything around him, lost all his senses for the blond man on top of him. He kept looking for Jimin's lips even after the younger one pulled away to breathe.

"That was corny as fuck." Jimin laughed and gave him a quick peck before adding, "I've missed this. I've missed you." He whispered breathlessly against Yoongi's mouth.

"I had forgotten the drug that your lips are." The black-haired man grunted back. "You make me an addict, Jiminnie..."

"Hyung, what will we do now?" He asked, looking directly into his eyes. "We didn't work once. What if...?"

"It won't happen again, I'll make sure of that," Yoongi assured. "I'm not the same kid I was, and our fame isn't as fragile as it was back then. I won't let anyone scare us into breaking up this time, I promise."

"Will you take good care of me? Of us?"

The list of things he wouldn’t do for Jimin was painfully short, and every single one of them was beyond human capability. Taking care of their relationship was just the least he would do for Jimin.

"I'll make sure you feel safe enough to kiss me in front of everybody if that's what you want, my prince." He fixed the blond man's hair behind his ear and kissed him. "I'd do anything for you."

"I can't believe I've managed to live without you this long, Yoonie... I love you."

Ah, the butterflies. They are back.

"I love you, Jiminnie."

The blond man settled on top of Yoongi, his head resting at the juncture of his neck and shoulder. Finally, Jimin felt ready to sleep, but...

"You'll have to bring Tang over from now on. I won't be able to co-parent if I don't get over this stupid allergy, and I won't do it if I don't get exposed to it."

The black-haired man rolled his eyes at his boyfriend's logic. "Just sleep, Park. We have a lot to do tomorrow..."

Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed it! It's short and sweet because I needed to get it out of my system after watching them being all lovey-dovey in camera.
