Work Text:
Yuuji shoulders through the narrow entryway of their apartment with the kind of bone-weary momentum that only comes after a training shift stretched into the late hours of the evening, his body still humming with the raw, electric current of cursed energy that clings to his skin.
He kicks the front door shut behind him with the heel of one worn sneaker, and the air wraps around him immediately, thick and welcoming, heavy with the familiar fragrances of home that unravel the knots in his chest one by one: miso and simmering broth from whatever Megumi has started cooking for dinner, the subtle vanilla undertones of the candles Megumi insists on keeping lit in the living room – and beneath it all, the grounding cedar-and-petrichor scent of his omega, earthy and alive, an aroma that has long since woven itself into the very marrow of Yuuji’s bones.
Truthfully, he’s beyond exhausted, the kind of deep fatigue that settles painfully into his joints and pleads for rest. Yet the moment he rounds the corner into the warmly lit kitchen, convenience store bags swinging gently at his sides, something inside him ignites, flooding his body with a warmth so strong that his heart suddenly feels too large inside his ribcage, too full, pounding with a ferocious tenderness at the simple sight waiting there for him.
Megumi is standing at the kitchen counter, wearing one of his oversized black sweatshirts reserved exclusively for the comfort of their home, the sleeves pushed up to the elbows and revealing the strong yet elegant lines of his forearms. His fingers are curled around the handle of a knife with that careful, precise grace that Yuuji has always secretly admired, the blade catching the light in rhythmic flashes as he chops scallions for dinner.
Yuuji pauses there in the threshold for a long, suspended breath, drinking in the domesticity of it all: the way the warm light caresses the sharp contours of Megumi’s face, how his long lashes cast delicate shadows across the high planes of his cheeks as he stares down at the cutting board, that stray lock of dark hair that has fallen into his eyes and he refuses to brush away, too focused and stubborn even in this one small thing. And Yuuji savors every detail, letting it wash over him in invigorating waves because in moments like these, the world outside –with its curses and clans and endless cycle of violence– feels wonderfully distant, a mere echo compared to the vivid, breathing reality of his mate moving so naturally within their shared space, creating sustenance and comfort with those same hands that keep the danger at bay.
“Hey, babe,” Yuuji calls out at last, voice pitched low and playful, laced with that rough affection that always seems to rumble up from the depths of his chest whenever he lays his eyes on his omega after any stretch of separation, no matter how brief. The grocery bags crinkle, items toppling over as Yuuji sets them down carelessly on the table in his approach; but he pays them no mind, instead drawn forward on purposeful feet, the day’s weariness already long forgotten.
At the greeting, Megumi’s shoulders draw in the smallest fraction, but he doesn’t turn around; he maintains that composed facade even as Yuuji comes right up behind him, chest brushing against the subtle curve of Megumi’s back, crowding forward until Megumi’s pelvis presses firmly into the edge of the counter, gently trapping him in the warm cage of Yuuji’s body. One of Yuuji’s hands braces on the countertop, while the other slides around Megumi’s waist, palm spreading broad and wide over the soft, well-worn fabric of his shirt, feeling the heat of skin and the steady rhythm of breath beneath.
“Missed you,” Yuuji murmurs against the shell of Megumi’s ear.
Megumi exhales through his nose in a measured stream, the sound carrying a faint edge of impatience that Yuuji knows is more habit than genuine irritation – the subtle easing of tension along Megumi’s spine betraying his quiet pleasure at being held and cherished.
“You’re early,” he replies, his chopping momentarily stopping, knife hovering just above the cutting board. “I thought training was running late tonight?”
“Got out sooner than expected,” Yuuji answers, words brushing warm and intimate against Megumi’s skin. He tilts his head, nose tracing along the delicate curve of Megumi’s ear in a slow, savoring line before he presses a loud, smacking kiss to the sensitive spot just beneath it – then another to his temple, and another to the sharp corner of his jaw. Each kiss is annoying in its exuberance, affectionate in its persistence, given specifically to draw out those rare, reluctant reactions Yuuji loves more than anything: the faint pink that creeps up Megumi’s neck despite his best efforts to remain unmoved, the way his breath hitches as his composure slips just the tiniest bit.
“Yuuji.” There’s a warning edge to Megumi’s tone, sharp as the knife still clenched within his grasp – yet it is softened, almost melted, by the tiniest huff of breath that hints at amusement or exasperation or some perfect combination of both. Decidedly still stubborn, though, he turns his head away half-heartedly in an attempt to refocus on the scallions waiting in front of him.
But Yuuji only grins in response, entirely undeterred, doubling down with playful determination. He kisses the nape of Megumi’s neck, open-mouthed and lingering, tongue flicking out to taste the salt of skin there; then he peppers smaller, sweeter kisses down to Megumi’s shoulder, where the sweatshirt’s collar has slipped invitingly aside, revealing a tantalizing expanse of pale, unmarked territory that belongs solely to him.
“Mwah,” he punctuates each fresh kiss aloud, absurdly bright and teasing; and he pauses only briefly to speak, words tumbling out in a muffled rush against Megumi’s heating skin: “What’s for dinner? Smells good already. You smell good. Did you use that fancy conditioner that Nobara–?”
“Stop that,” Megumi mutters in interruption, the words lacking any real heat and woven entirely out of reluctant fondness; and his free hand rises to curl loosely around Yuuji’s wrist where it rests possessively over his stomach, holding him there in silent acceptance. His scent spikes as Yuuji’s sporadic kisses continue, just barely, fresh leaves crushed underfoot in the aftermath of rain – before it mellows into something sweeter, almost milky and enveloping, layers of comfort and affection blooming outward in waves that wrap around Yuuji’s senses and sink deep into his core.
Yuuji lets out a low, satisfied purr that rumbles up from his chest unbidden, vibrating through their joined bodies, the sound carrying with it centuries of instinctual claim and natural devotion. He nips gently at the soft skin behind Megumi’s ear, then soothes the sting with another exaggerated, lingering kiss – savoring the way Megumi’s fingers tighten incrementally around his wrist, the knife in his other hand finally set down on the cutting board with a soft clack as the omega’s focus fully fractures under the gentle onslaught of affection.
Yuuji is in the middle of another one of those worshiping kisses, lips pressed tenderly to the hinge of Megumi’s jaw, breathing in the mingled scents of soap and rain and home and something more – when it hits him with a mind-shattering force, a revelation that seems to stop the very world around him mid-turn.
Beneath the familiar tapestry of Megumi’s essence, that milky scent seems to deepen under Yuuji’s persistent attention: richer, warmer, until it’s coating Yuuji’s tongue and back of his throat like some impossibly sweet nectar, awakening every protective, possessive alpha instinct in his body until they howl in triumphant unison within the cavern of his chest. His hand on Megumi’s stomach flexes involuntarily, palm pressing firmer against the still-muscled expanse hidden beneath the shirt’s fabric – where nothing is yet visible to the naked eye, nothing Megumi seems to have noticed amidst the chaotic rhythm of their daily lives.
But the scent doesn’t lie – not to an alpha bonded so deeply, so intimately, whose very soul is attuned to every nuance and shift in his mate’s body.
Pregnant.
The word blooms in Yuuji’s mind like a lotus unfurling under the break of dawn, petals stretching out one by one to reveal a luminous core – opening his eyes to a profound sense of awe and fierce joy and a sudden, bone-deep fear that has his heart stuttering in his chest.
Yuuji’s breath catches audibly in the hush of the kitchen, a sharp hitch he can’t control, his broad frame trembling faintly against Megumi’s back as emotions crash through him in dizzying waves. He pulls back just enough to stare at the side of Megumi’s face, heart hammering wildly against his ribs, eyes tracing that elegant profile in the warm light with newfound wonder and concern: the delicate furrow between Megumi’s brows, the way his lashes flutter in confusion, the subtle part of his lips that Yuuji has to restrain himself from capturing in a bruising kiss.
“Yuuji?” Megumi asks, seemingly noticing the abrupt shift in the air, head turning just slightly in an attempt to catch Yuuji’s gaze. His fingers are still wrapped around Yuuji’s wrist, thumb now stroking absently along the skin there in a soothing rhythm born of instinct rather than conscious thought. “What’s wrong with you?”
Yuuji swallows hard, throat constricting around the sudden swell that threatens to spill over like a river breaching its banks, the words he wants to blurt out –ecstatic proclamations, awestruck whispers, vows renewed– temporarily lodged behind a dam of pure wonder that holds back the flood with trembling strength. He leans back in to press his forehead to Megumi’s temple, breathing him in again, slow and deep and deliberate, letting that new golden thread of scent settle into his aching bones and all the spaces in between, filling him with such a profound sense of rightness that it reshapes the contours of his world in a single instant.
“Itadori,” Megumi prompts impatiently. “Yuuji.”
“Nothing’s wrong, baby,” Yuuji finally murmurs, low and rough, the words vibrating with the depth of his adoration as he kisses the corner of Megumi’s mouth with aching softness, lingering there as if to seal a silent promise. “Just.. you smell good today. Like, really good.”
Megumi narrows those striking eyes of his, suspicion flickering openly across his sharp features even as the flush climbs higher up his neck, painting the skin of his cheeks and the tip of his nose a pale rose. “You’re being weird,” he says, tone laced with that familiar dry skepticism; though he leans back into Yuuji’s encompassing hold anyway, seeking the warmth and solidity there despite his clear confusion. “Did you hit your head during training again?”
Yuuji laughs, shaky and wondrous and far too loud. He slides both arms around Megumi’s waist now, pulling the other man back more securely against the broad plane of his chest, like the world’s most precious treasure rests within his embrace, and he doesn’t intend to let it stray far. One palm remains spread protectively over Megumi’s lower abdomen, fingers splaying wide as if already eager to feel the miraculous spark of life flickering there, just beneath his touch.
“Maybe,” he whispers, eyes briefly slipping closed as he turns his head fully into the defiant tufts of Megumi’s hair, inhaling again – drowning willingly in the symphony of newer, sweet scents that promise futures he has only dared dream of in the quiet hours of the night. His voice drops even lower, warm and soft, full of so much overflowing affection that it wavers at the edges, “Or maybe I just really, really love you.”
Megumi makes a small, surprised noise in the back of his throat, something between a fond huff and a questioning murmur; yet he relaxes even further, body melting back into Yuuji’s solid frame with the trust and comfort that has been forged through their countless battles and tender aftermaths spent together.
Yuuji tightens his arms a fraction more, his mind already spinning with fragmented visions of the days to come: Megumi’s body softening and rounding out with the evidence of their bond, tiny hands and curious eyes, a manifestation of the protective love that burns supernova-bright in the center of Yuuji’s chest. The seconds bleed away as Yuuji loses himself in this new, shimmering reality, the alpha in him purring continuously now in a low rumble that travels through their joined bodies like a lullaby for the life only he yet senses.
And Yuuji finds himself wondering through the dense haze of it, how long he can possibly keep this radiant secret cradled within himself before it spills out like sunlight breaking through storm clouds, illuminating every shadowed corner of their lives with new, breathtaking possibility.
He doesn’t manage to keep it to himself for more than an hour.
