Work Text:

Lucy hates the days that she is off and Tim’s at work. He was called in at the last minute to finalize some things with the captain and he really couldn’t say no. Lucy cleans the kitchen, living room, dining room and bathroom all before noon to keep herself busy. She really hopes that Tim will be home soon.

“I guess I’ll start some laundry.” She makes sure the darks are altogether and grabs the basket. The washer is not far from their room but unfortunately for her, Kojo is laying in the middle of the floor and she trips over him. She couldn’t see him and he made no effort to move, of course. The laundry goes tumbling onto the floor but she manages to catch herself before falling completely down. Her left arm and hand landed awkwardly and she heard a crack. Her hand flies to her belly and she breathes out a sigh of relief that she didn’t land that way. She’s six months pregnant and her balance has been all out of whack since she found out. “I think my wrist is broken.” She put all the weight on her arm. “Shit.”

“Kojo.” He is looking at her with sad eyes. “I know it was an accident, bud.” He just runs away.

Lucy still manages to throw a load of laundry in before going to grab some ice. She hates bothering Tim but her wrist is swelling and it isn’t looking too good. Once the clothes are switched over to the dryer, Lucy knows she needs to call her husband. Her arm is swollen, she’s in pain, and she can’t really move it.

Tim doesn’t answer and she has to fight back her tears. Pain is something she’s mostly gotten accustomed to, but not this level. “Lucy, baby, I’m home.” She hears Tim’s voice and is so relieved that he’s home. She pads to the living room, clutching her arm. He knows something is wrong, almost instantly and is immediately by her side. “What happened?”

Lucy can see him checking her for any other injuries. “I was going to start the laundry and I didn’t see Kojo laying on the floor.” Tim can see that she’s in pain. “I went down hard but I put all my weight on my wrist so I didn’t hit my belly and I think it’s broken.”

“It looks pretty bad, baby. We need to get you to the hospital.” Lucy nods. Tim slips her shoes on and packs them a bag of clothes just in case. “Did you hurt anything else, baby?”

Lucy shakes her head. “No, I put most of my weight on my left arm.” Tim kisses her forehead and then helps her to the car. His focus is on Lucy. “I tried to protect us both.”

“And you did Luce. I’m so sorry you’re in pain though.” The drive to the hospital is shorter than normal. Tim is worried about Lucy and can’t believe she waited so long to even try to call him. She’s the most stubborn, beautiful, amazing, woman in this entire world.

As soon as they arrive in the ER, the nurses take Lucy back immediately. Between her being pregnant and the way her arm looks, they want her to be seen as quickly as possible. It helps that Luna helps to push as well. “It’s going to be okay.” Lucy nods because she can’t seem to find her words.

“We are going to look at your wrist, complete an X-Ray and then check on your baby.” One of the nurses smiles sweetly. Tim holds onto Lucy’s good hand. An hour later, a doctor comes in to speak with them.

“Mrs. Bradford, you are going to need surgery on your arm. There’s a severe fracture that we need to fix. You’re going to be in a cast for about six to eight weeks.”

Tim squeezes her hand gently. “When do you want to take her for surgery and how long does it usually take?”

“We are getting an OR ready now. It is usually just under a few hours. The baby will be monitored but we don’t have any cause for concern right now. I’m going to have you brought to a room and then have you change into a gown.”

Tim thanks the doctor and they are wheeled two floors up to a new room. “Baby, I’m here, okay?” She nods her head. “You’re both okay. You just need a little help to heal.”

“I’m just scared and so mad at myself. I tripped over our dog because of my pregnancy brain and my lack of coordination.” Lucy grunts when she moves the wrong way.

Tim helps her stand, ever so gently. “Let’s get you changed into the gown, baby, and then I’ll cuddle you until you go into surgery.” He carefully hovers her shirt off, although Lucy hisses slightly. He removes her pants and helps to put the hospital gown on. He makes sure that she has one of the pairs of hospital socks especially since they have grips on the feet. “Let’s go to the bed.”

“Thank you.” Lucy says quietly.

Tim helps her into the bed and then moves her so she’s comfortably in his arms. He has a pillow for her wrist which is now in a splint. “How’s our girl?”

“Moving like crazy.” Tim’s hand lands on her belly and he feels a few kicks. “She wasn’t happy with me earlier.”

“Oh baby. Accidents happen. I’m just glad you’re okay, well for the most part.” Lucy catches on that Tim keeps calling her baby, something she typically teases him for. For now, she really does need to hear it and she secretly loves it. “This will be quick and by tomorrow the latest we will be back home. You’ll get a cast which I will make pretty for you and then we can plan things out for our daughter.” They do need to figure her room out and this will be the perfect opportunity. “You’ll get to sit and boss me around.”

“That sounds like fun.” She murmurs and Tim kisses the top of her head.

“Baby, I’ll be here for you every step of the way. You’re in the best hands.” There’s a knock at the door and it’s time for surgery. “I’ll be here when you’re done. I love you both so much.”

“We love you.” Tim kisses her lips before moving out of the bed. He walks with her to the surgical doors until he’s left alone.

Tim isn’t good at the waiting part. He takes a walk and finds the gift shop. There’s a variety of stuffed animals. He finds one that looks like Kojo and grabs it. Then he grabs some chocolate, a balloon, and a cozy new blanket for her recovery. He will wait to eat until he knows she’s okay and out of surgery.

Tim sits in the waiting room and watches the minutes go by. A nurse finally comes out for him. “Lucy is out of surgery and in recovery. You can come sit with her and then we will get you back to your room.”

“Thank you.” He grabs the stuff he bought and goes to sit by his wife’s side. Her eyes are closed but she had a new pink cast on her left arm all the way up to her elbow.

Tim sits in the chair. One hand lands on her belly and the other grabs her right hand. “I’m right here baby.” He breathes easier being able to see her. “I’ve got you.”

Lucy’s eyes are still closed and she doesn’t start to stir for about twenty more minutes. She groans but Tim’s right by her side. “Hey, don’t try to move too much.” Her eyes blink open and a small smile appears. “I’m here.”

“You’re pretty.” Lucy teases Tim and he smirks. “This sucks.”

“The surgery was a success and now I get to play your nurse for the next two months.” Tim is very happy about that.

“That is definitely a plus.” Lucy is so thankful for this wonderful husband of hers.

Tim seems to read her mind. “Do you want a small sip of water baby?” She nods and he brings the straw to her mouth.

The nurse and doctor pick that time to come over. “Your surgery went very well.” Lucy nods sleepily. “We are going to keep you overnight for observation since it’s so late in the day. You should be able to go home in the morning.”

“Is there anything that I need to know right now?” Tim is the one who asks so he can support Lucy.

“Just keep being her support. We will go over more care instructions tomorrow. Now, you’re going to go back to your room. Do you have any questions?”

“Can I eat?” Tim has to stifle back a laugh because she is half asleep.

The doctor smiles. “Of course you can. Just don’t overdo it.”

Tim thanks them again and Lucy is wheeled back to her room. “Lay with me please.” Lucy looks at Tim once everyone has cleared the room.

“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be, baby.” He lays beside her and she curls into him. He can tell she’s still tired and rubs his hand up and down her back until he hears her breathing even out. Tim texts Angela and asks her to bring them food. It isn’t anything too heavy and she’s happy to help.

Lucy stirs an hour later to a wonderful aroma. Her stomach growls and she hears Tim chuckle. “I guess this is perfect timing.”

“What’s all this?” Tim helps her sit up and he moves the small table closer.

“Dinner. You kind of missed lunch.” He grins and he's proud of himself. “It’s soup and sandwiches from your favorite place. I figured it will fill you up but it isn’t too heavy on your stomach.”

“You’re amazing.” Lucy smiles at her husband. She is so thankful that her dominant hand isn’t hurt and she can mostly feed herself. Tim helps a bit but only because she’s still a bit groggy.

“How do you feel?” Tim asks her after she’s eaten a bit.

“I’m hurting, but I’m okay. The food definitely helped and having my honey bunny here helps.” She has a teasing look in her eyes.

“Well, I’m at your service baby, for whatever you need or want.” Tim takes a small bow and Lucy giggles. “I’ve got you.”

“You always do.” Tim cleans their dinner up. “I need to use the bathroom.”

The nurse did give him instructions on best ways to help and even told him she could have a sponge bath if she wanted. “Well, let me help you.” It takes a minute but he helps her out of the bed and to the bathroom. “Do you want to clean up here or wait until we get home?

Lucy thinks about it for a minute. “When we get home. I showered with you this morning and these showers are small.” Tim can’t disagree with that and helps her back into the bed. That night, there isn’t much sleep for either of them.

Tim is by her side throughout the entire night though. The nurse discharges them around ten and gives very explicit instructions for Lucy. He needs to buy the waterproof coverings for baths and showers at some point. “I can’t wait to go home.” Lucy is in the bathroom, needing to get changed.

“You’ll sleep much better in your own bed.” Tim unties the gown and gently slips it off. His hand rests on her belly and he places a gentle kiss on her lips. “Let’s get you dressed and then home.” Lucy nods in agreement. “Do you want my clothes?”

“It’ll be so much easier, as long as you’re okay with it.” Lucy has only been able to take Tylenol because she’s pregnant and it doesn’t fully seem to be helping.

“Baby, they look better on you anyways.” Tim puts a pair of sweatpants on first and then as carefully as he can, slips a shirt on. She forgoes a bra because it just isn’t comfortable at the moment. Tim has one of his zip up hoodies that he carefully helps her into. She slips her slippers on, ones that have a hard sole, and it’s finally time to go.

“Let’s go home.” Lucy mumbles out. She really wants her bed. They make her sit in a wheelchair to leave and she doesn’t even complain. Tim drives home, slower than normal, and he’s careful about the bumps. He’s a bit too cautious, not that Lucy minds this version of Tim.

“Home sweet home.” Tim’s hand is on her thigh and he quickly gets out before going to her door. “Can we just cuddle, please?”

Tim smiles softly and cups her cheek. “Absolutely. Whatever you want, you can have, baby.” She squeals when Tim picks her up bridal style.

“What are you doing?” She rests against him easily.

Tim kisses her cheek. “I’m carrying my honey bunny in the house so that she doesn’t need to over exert herself.” Lucy shoves her face into his neck.

“You really are a big softy.”

Tim places her on the bed. “That would only be for my favorite girls.” He winks. “Now let me get our bags and we can take a nap before lunch.”

Lucy’s eyes fill with tears. “Hey Tim?” He turns. “I love you. Thank you for taking care of me.”

Tim moves closer to kiss her again. “I will always take care of you. I love you too, baby.”
