The living room was quiet past the twin sounds of the mobile games. Kai and Jooyeon sat shoulder to shoulder, their screens synced as they played. The warmth between them was comforting, seeping through the thin fabric of their shirts.
Kai let out a huff, dropping his head back against the couch as his character dropped to the ground in a slow, dramatic death. "Fuck!" he groaned, reaching up to press a hand over his face. "Avenge me, please! I can't believe I fell for that ambush."
Jooyeon hummed, only half paying attention. "Oh, I still have every intention to win, with or without you." His thumbs moved quickly over the screen, launching an attack against the nearest enemy.
"Wow, thanks," Kai grumbled. He forced himself up, leaning over to peer at Jooyeon’s screen. He watched the character leap into the air, performing a flying kick and taking out two enemies. "Show off."
"Shut up," Jooyeon shot back, his voice holding no real venom.
It was only a matter of minutes before Jooyeon too met his fate. His screen darkened, the words 'Defeat' spilling across it. He let out an angry sound, dropping his phone down onto the couch beside him.
At some point over the last few minutes, Kai had rested his chin on Jooyeon’s shoulder, finding it easy in their position. Jooyeon never seemed to mind physical contact, in fact, he always seemed to enjoy it.
With another groan, Jooyeon shifted suddenly, turning his head sideways to look at Kai. It was right then that they both realised their mistake. All too suddenly, the corners of their lips came into contact, held back only by their noses that bumped awkwardly against each other.
There was a sudden silence between them, one that rang out thickly through the room. And yet, as they both sat there, lips barely touching and hearts racing, neither of them moved.
Jooyeon wasn't sure who moved first. All he could feel was the soft press of lips against his own, Kai's breath hot against his skin. His hand twitched, shooting up to cup Kai's cheek.
Suddenly it wasn’t about the awkward press of skin anymore, it was about the embers burning low in Jooyeon’s chest, the giddy bubble that began to grow inside his stomach.
He swung himself sideways, straddling Kai's thighs and drawing a startled gasp in response. The idol's hands tightened into fists against Jooyeon’s hips, knuckles white against the blue fabric of his t-shirt.
Their lips moved in time, taking and taking until their lungs began to ache. Jooyeon’s fingers brushed up through Kai's hair as they broke apart. But the idol didn’t give Jooyeon a break, chasing his neck to litter it with open mouth kisses.
All the bassist could do was tip his head back, a heavy sigh falling from his lips. His fingers laced properly through Kai's hair, holding his closer.
As Kai kissed along Jooyeon’s pulse point, he swore he could feel the way the bassist's heart was hammering, each beat uneven and desperate for more. He pressed his tongue to it, licking a stripe all the way back up to Jooyeon’s mouth.
Their lips slotted back together, the kiss opening into something more, deepening and widening like a raveene between them. It grew until it became so vast, even looking down left them both dizzy and reeling.
They broke apart, their shoulders heaving as they struggled to catch their breaths. Jooyeon laughed first, leaning down to press their foreheads together. His fingers slid out of Kai's hair, coming to settle on the curve of the junction between his throat and shoulders.
"Well, that happened," Jooyeon breathed, his kiss-swollen lips pulling up into a weak smile.
Kai's eyes were glassy as he leant back, just far enough to study Jooyeon’s expression. When he spoke, his voice was guarded and unsure. "I didn't realise you were gay."
The bassist let put a huff. "Neither did I." His eyes narrowed as he studied his best friend's expression. "I also didn't realise you were gay."
Kai sighed. "Neither did I," he echoed.
Slowly, Jooyeon dipped down again, brushing their lips together one last time. "I like it though," he commented. "I like this. More than I thought I would."
"So do I," Kai admitted, his fingers flexing against the material of Jooyeon’s shirt. "Do you…? I mean, would you…?" The question died in his throat.
Jooyeon’s lips pulled up into a sly grin. "If you're about to ask me out, then yes. I would love to."
"Really?" Kai asked, as if the concept was so foreign he could barely believe it. "You would want to?"
With a irritated grumble, Jooyeon poked the idol's side roughly, enough to make him squirm. "We just made out and I'm literally sitting in your lap right now. What part of this makes you think I don't want you?"
Kai's cheeks burned at the comment. But Jooyeon’s annoyance didn't stay. His smile curled back onto his face a moment later, his eyes sparkling. Carefully, he leant down again, letting their noses brush teasingly.
"I want you to buy me dinner, Huening Kai," Jooyeon breathed into the space between them. "If you want to."
"Oh God… I do," Kai admitted, his own words equally as soft, strung between them alongside his exposed heart. "I want to so badly. I have never wanted anything so badly before."
"Good." The word was barely there, spoken only moments before Jooyeon’s lips crashed back down against Kai's.
The hang out started between two strictly platonic, straight best friends, but it ended with two new lovers, both of them giddy as their heartbeats synced and their hands pulled each other closer.
That night, long after he returned home, Jooyeon would think back on the day. He would consider the events closely, trying to decipher the suddenness of it all. The moment he turned gay, his brain clicking as it all of a sudden registered just how attractive his best friend was.
A week later, Jooyeon would realise that he had felt this way for a long time. His feelings weren't new, only his ability to properly decipher them. When the two of them went on their date - eating takeaways while pretending to watch an anime, but really just trading kisses and chessey jokes - Jooyeon would realise that this was what he had wanted the entire time.
As his lips pressed along Kai's jaw, he would realise that, to him, this was perfect. And based on the breathy sighs that fell from the idol's lips, his fingers pulling Jooyeon impossibly closer, this was what Kai wanted too.
