Deathnote: alternative paths.

Summary:

On the rooftop, the rain is pouring, Ryuzaki stands in shock. Light admits it, he is kira.

This is a collection of deathnote scenes I rewrote. It is mainly to practice my writing, feel free to leave some feedback. Do note, I am not a native english speaker, so if there are any sentences that don´t make sense, please do tell. All in all I hope you enjoy my rewrites and that my passion for this series shines through.

Chapter 1: A talk.

Chapter Text

**He must be on the rooftop…**

The rain is pouring. A dark mist has covered Tokyo making every corner feel gloomy. There´s not even a small gap in the clouds that would allow the sun to shine through. The led lights of the hallway, against their best efforts don't brighten the mood either. One glance at his watch. Half past 6. The heavy rain and the fog that have consumed the sky. If dawn was here, you'd barely notice. Turning around the corner and opening the door to the fire escape, Light climbed the stairs. A couple of floors up and he would reach the roof. There is a cold breeze in the stairway. Regretting not taking his jacket, he rubbed his hands together. Soon enough he found the open door that led to the roof.

**Just what does he think he´s doing?**

Looking up at the clouds, there Ryuzaki stands wearing his usual oversized white t-shirt and blue jeans. He's soaked, his shirt revealing pieces of his skin as it clung to him.

**Is he trying to catch a fever?**

Awakening from his daydreaming, Ryuzaki´s head turns. His wide eyes are now piercing directly to where Light was covering from the rain. Those eyes almost seemed judgemental, as if he was irritated that someone interrupted his conversation with whoever was up there.

¨What are you doing standing out there by yourself?¨ Light said. The sound drowned out by the storm. Leaning forward and lifting his hand to his ear, Ryuzaki made it clear that he couldn't make out a single word.

¨What are you doing standing out there by yourself?!¨ Light repeated louder this time. Ryuzaki smiled and made the same hand gesture. As if he was challenging him and saying ´come closer, talk to me.´

Unable to hold back a groan, he took the chance and stepped away from his cover. The cold water poured on his shirt, but he complained no further as he walked towards Ryuzaki.

L:: ¨What are you doing Ryuzaki?¨

R: ¨Oh I´m not doing anything in particular, it´s just I hear the bell.¨

L: ¨The bell?¨ He said, his hand shielding his eyes.

R: ¨Yes the sound of a bell has been unusually loud today.¨

Light looked around confused while Ryuzaki lowered his gaze to the ground, seemingly lost in thought again.
**What is he talking about?**

L: ¨I don´t hear anything.¨

R: ¨Really? You can´t hear it? It´s been ringing non-stop all day. I find it very distracting, I wonder if it´s a church. Maybe a wedding or perhaps a….¨

**Funeral?**

L: ¨What are you getting at Ryuzaki, come on cut it out, let's get back inside.¨

R: ¨I´m sorry, nothing I say makes sense anyway. If I were you I wouldn´t believe any of it.¨

**Why is he just standing here in the cold rain, by himself? Has he been waiting for me to get him? Has he realized it yet?**

L: ¨You know you´re totally right. Honestly most of the things you say sounds like complete nonsense. There´d be no end to my troubles if I actually took you seriously all the time. I probably know that better than anyone.¨
R: ¨Yes, I would say that´s a fair assessment, but I could say the same about you.¨

L: ¨Hm? What's that supposed to mean?¨

With hands in his pockets, Ryuzaki gave him a cold stare.

R: ¨Tell me Light, from the moment you were born has there ever been a point where you´ve actually told the truth?¨

….

L: ¨I see now… The loud pouring rain, you standing here alone on the roof. You want to talk? Fine let's talk.¨

Light walks up to the edge of the roof and looks over at the city. He leans against the railing. Ryuzaki watched as Light did so.
L: ¨You were right Ryuzaki. I am Kira.¨

Walking up to light he leaned his back against the same railing.
R: I never thought you would admit to that.¨

L: ¨I can imagine, to be honest I'm surprising myself as well¨

Ryuzaki raised an eyebrow.
R: ¨I´d say the probability of you confessing was probably around, 7 or 8 procent.¨

L: ¨That low huh? Well I see no reason in hiding it anymore.¨In the distance he could see Tokyo tower. Down below there are offices, houses, grocery stores and cars crossing bridges. All with people who are either enjoying their time at home, or perhaps just starting their night shift. If Light never found the notebook. Would he have a life just like that? Going to college, then working a 9 to 5? Having a family? If things were different, if someone else were to be Kira, would he be catching him like Ryuzaki would have? Considering the person he was, then… he probably yes.

R: ¨It would be lonely wouldn't it?¨

L: ¨...¨

R:¨You doing whatever you please, who will be there to challenge you?¨

L: ¨It´s sounds rather…¨
Pointless? Boring? Just what exactly will he do once Ryuaki is gone? Sure there are plenty of criminals in this world he can get rid off, but for how long will that keep going? Once the entire world is in his hands then…then what? Will the world finally stop rotting from within? Or would it just go and hide itself better?

R: ¨Look, Light. The criminals you have executed, the people you have deceived, it won't be long until someone else goes after you. Afterall, you are the greatest mass murderer in all of history. Someone is bound to find out. If you won´t keep your head cool, you´re gonna make mistakes.¨

L: ¨I realize that yes. The first person I had killed… It was almost on a whim. I was naive, I didn´t expect for the man to die right then and there, but once I had started, I knew I had to do something. I had a chance, a purpose to do something. There were too many corrupt politicians, too many criminals who just got away with hurting people. I just had to…¨
¨I know you don't agree with my viewpoint. You can say I am corrupt, but you must admit that the crime rate around the globe has dropped by 70 percent, no one even dares to start a war, all because they had one common fear.¨

R: ¨You´re right. I don't agree with your viewpoint. Playing god, having the entire world under your thumb. Someone´s fate shouldn´t be decided by one person alone.¨
Ryuzaki then turned to face the same city Light was looking down upon. The never ending rain that threatens to flood the streets, the darkness that arose from the east. It all seemed to mock them. As if a thing such as justice wouldn't matter in the grand scheme.
¨Though it does not matter what I think now does it? You and I will be parting ways soon, so try to not let it get to your head.¨
He nudged his elbow against Light's side. Just for a moment, Light could see a solemn smile

R: ¨It´s not everyday that you're so honest. Come, let's head back inside. We´re both soaking wet.¨

Notes:

Thank you for reading! I wrote this on a whim and I rewrote this scene because I wanted to practice my writing some more. I plan to rewrite more Deathnote scene´s, but with diffrent idea´s. For example I want to write about Matt and Misa in the next chapters. The idea for this chapter I got when I was rewatching some deathnote clips on youtube and wondered ´What would L do if Light admitted to be Kira at the very end?´
I hope that idea came through at the end. Anyway tell me what you think. What do you think L would say if Light admitted his crimes in the rooftop scene?
