“Sveta,” Ilya answers, letting his mouth sink into the forward sound of his mother tongue: “Are you okay?”
“It’s Alexei,” she says. Her voice is a stolid calm. Ilya stares absently ahead, finding a spot on the way to steady his gaze on. Across the thousands of miles between Ottawa and Moscow, Svetlana says: “It was an overdose.”
